Good morning to all! Well, I must start by saying that yesterday was definitely a fabulous day to be a Dar/Richard/Lucy fan! I was lucky enough to get to chat with Dar for a few moments on WFUV's live online chat! It was wonderful for me to have the opportunity to finally thank Dar for inspiring me to stay strong and remember just how many of us have suffered through severe depression. I had such a warm, content feeling come over me as she told me how thrilled she was that I made it through, etc. It was truly an amazing afternoon. Those of you that were a part of the live chat will know exactly what I mean. As if that weren't enough for one day, I then went to see Richard Shindell at the Bottom Line! I was a little late arriving, so when I got there Dave Carter & Tracy Grammar were already performing. I'm not sure how many songs I missed but here are the ones I heard: "Crocodile Man", "When I Go", "Kate & The Ghost of Lost Love". They did a song after Crocodile Man, but I am not sure of the title. They were amazing! "Kate & The Ghost of Lost Love" is an incredibly beautiful song, I especially loved when Dave & Tracy sang their own part of the song simultaneously. They each were singing different lyrics but the harmony blended together in perfect unison-WOW!! Next, Jess Klein took the stage. I had heard her earlier in the day when she did a few songs live on WFUV. She was even better in person, she has a great sound. Her voice kind of reminded me of Sheryl Crow. Here is her set of songs(I apologize if the song titles are not correct, she didn't announce each title so I had to guess on a couple): "I Sure Would" "Ireland", "Little White Dove", "Love Is Where You Find It", "I Believe", "I Tried". The audience loved her and made her feel very welcome. Now, onto Mr. Shindell! He opened the show with "Confession". In my opinion the band was very loud on this song, they were overpowering his vocals. It seemed as if he were straining to be heard over the music. Maybe it's just me, but I love his voice most of all so when the music is too loud the song suffers a bit. Next was "Abuelita", which was fabulous. Then Richard announced that a special friend of his was in the audience and invited her up to sing with him. Yes, it was none other than our beloved Lucy Kaplansky!! It was a delight for all of us!!!! He sang "Kenworth Of My Dreams" with Lucy on harmony-once again I say "WOW!!" They also sang "Next Best Western" together-"TERRIFIC!" Lucy went back and sat with us in the audience. Richard said we were very lucky that Lucy was there and that she would not be for the second show of the evening. He was right, we were VERY lucky!! He went on to do an incredible version of "Wisteria". His voice was intense, more so than usual. Next he did a cover of a Peter Rowan (forgive me if the spelling is incorrect) song "Gambling Man". Well, I wasn't too familiar with the song but how shall I say..it kicked ass!! His next two songs were "You Stay Here" and "Fishing". Unfortunately there was feedback during both songs, it was apparent that Richard was getting annoyed. I can't say I blame him, these are great songs, and to have them tainted with feedback is a shame! As he sang "Reunion Hill" the feedback problem was finally eliminated and things were back on track! Well, much to my delight, he called Lucy back on stage. She said her mom was also in the audience. She sang "Ballad of Mary Magdalene", she sang lead and Richard joined in on the chorus. It was so beautiful I can hardly put it into words!! Lucy had left the stage for a second and when she returned Richard asked where she went. She said she had to fix her lipstick, it had smudged. Richard said in a joking way, "But why, that was a good look for you!" Lucy just kind of said "Thanks Richard", with a smirk on her face and a sarcastic tone in her voice. It was a funny moment. Next they sang a request from the audience, "Sin City". She also sang harmony with him on one of my favorites, "Are You Happy Now". It was one of the best versions I have ever heard!! Richard did "Transit" solo with the band. For his encore he called Lucy back on stage AGAIN and they did "Sing Me Back Home". It was awesome to say the least!!! The band was excellent. He had a female piano/accordion player(I don't remember her name but she rocks!), Lincoln Schaefer on bass, John Putnam on guitar and Dylan McDermott on drums. Well, after the show as I hung around and finally got to meet/chat with Gene and Ron G. of the list, I noticed I was standing right next to the table that Lucy K. was sitting at with her mom. I thought of sitting down and chatting with her but I decided to let her be, she really seemed to be enjoying the time with her mom. Family time is definitely more important than me just rambling on about how much I love her music! Well, that's all folks. I think I can say this on behalf of the entire audience- A Good Time Was Had By All!!!! I hope those of you that were not lucky enough to be there will enjoy this review, I tried my best to give you all the details so you will feel as if you were there! Take care everyone! *Basking in the post show after glow!*** Renee Polgar _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. If the List wants I'll make up a more comprehensive list as a = Word document to send to anyone who wants it. I will try to work from East to West & North to South, but this is very = haphazard! Here in Glasgow Scotland we have King Tuts WaH Wah Hut in St Vincent St = Glasgow, and the Cottier Theatre, Hydland Rd Glasgow. A bigger but great = Glasgow venue is The Old Fruitmarket, Albion St. Across the Pond in Boston Fantine mentions Club Passim in Cambridge = Mass, and the first of its kind, I think, the venerable Caf=E9 Lena, in = Saratoga Springs, NY.=20 Sharon G likes the famous Iron Horse in Northampton West Mass, and also = mentions the Rich Forum in Stamford Conn. Sharon gives a nod to the = Turning Point in Orange County, NY, and Fish lists Bodles in Chester, = NY.=20 Ron mentions three venues on Long Island. The Brokerage, a Lucy haunt I = think, and Steven's Talkhouse in Amagansett. He also lists The Folk = Music Society of Huntington, Messrs Rand & McNally tell me that is in = NY, so make that two on LI. Surprisingly, Makor in NYC's West side, is the mentioned venue most = often of them all, a few love it, most don't love it, some of you think = its an incinerator! The Bottom Line, NYC, is scarcely listed, and Sharon = was the only one to mention Fez, which surprised me. She also names the = Bitter End, (Lucy's Bleeker St bar?). Only a few venues in NJ. Grace Norton School in Hightstown and the = aforementioned LI stages. Seems to be a hotbed of House Concerts though. That's enough for one e mail, part two coming soon.=20 A few pleas for help. Someone sent me a great post about California = venues but its disappeared-can you send it again, please. Also there was = a few mentions of some spaces in Texas (lets face it, there are a lot of = spaces in Texas!), can you revise for me. Also there was a post about = Seattle, but that's gone missing as well.=20 Big holes all over the southern states including Florida and Georgia, = and nothing to speak of in Arizona, NM, CO, or the area where your = General Custer met his Waterloo (as in Napoleon). =20 Sorry this is so long, are you all OK with it? Thanks for the reviews Benay and Renee. So when is Lucy playing with Ellis Paul? Musi-Cal is jumping from Sun Nov 19th to Fri Dec 8th. I know she is playing Nov 25th in Hightstown, NJ w/ Cheryl Wheeler because I have tickets....which leads me to my next question- What Cheryl Wheeler CD should I purchase? I don't have any and was hoping for some feedback. Thanks, Donna PS It was nice to meet you Renee. I wish I could have met more of the fellow Lucy-listers. "The more obscure, the better". Which explains why she likes "Boiling Water" (Trish Murphy), Townes Van Z, Gram Parsons, Richard Thompson, and a few others. Back in 1998, she performed "Fever" at a house concert, and it was the most "popular" songs that I've ever heard her do. I would love Lucy to cover "Landslide" one of my favorite Stevie songs or maybe even "Silver Springs". I can't believe we have discussed all of my favorite artists on this list over the past week. Nanci Griffith, Stevie Nicks and of course our Lucy. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 20:50:35 EDT From: SM082987@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Covers Lucy might try dont buy any mac album except the "elemental" Bare Trees and the Sands of Time:" the rest is bullshit. ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V2 #235 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
