It's been a while since I lived there, so I'm working from memory here (hoping those places actually still exist). The prime music venue in town, the Backstage, has (been?) closed down and is now a gym... Dar played there, the Indigo Girls played there... and now it's a gym! Well, anyway. So that leaves the city without THE folk/acoustic music venue IMHO, but the Seattle Folklore Society, who puts on most of the folk shows in town (including Lucy's past concerts I believe) and can be found at http://www.seafolklore.org/ has a couple of venues it usually produces its shows at: The Grateful Bread 7001 35th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115 I've never been there so I can't say much about it, I think it's a pretty comfy looking place that serves good food... but... anybody ever been there? Kane Hall and Meany Hall University of Washington, Seattle, WA Are the two big halls at UofW. I've seen Dar play Kane Hall, it's a typical lecture hall and seats about 700 people I think. Tractor Tavern 5213 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107 That's a pretty cool place, not a folk venue per se, it has more of a country feel to it, there's a bar on the side and the audience sits (without tables when I was there) in the main room. There either is a whole tractor or part of one in the place, I can't recall. When I saw Fred Eaglesmith there years ago he commented: "I'm glad we're not playing a folk venue today, these folk fans are so uptied" or something to that effect. It took me a while to forgive him for that remark :) There are plenty of small rock venues in Seattle, the one I like the most is the Crocodile Cafe which is downtownish, I think on 2nd. Occasionally there are more acoustic acts there like John Wesley Harding. There are many more venues of that type, cafe/restaurant during the day, bar/music venue at night but it's been so long, I can't think of their names. Belltown or Capitol Hill is your best bet for venues of that sort. I think it's about time I went back there... :-) Katrin Oh, and Dave said: > Dave, hoping Lucy's playing The Borderline any day *other* than > December 9. I'm hoping the same. Pleeeease Lucy, make it another day. You'll make Dave and me and a few other folks very happy if you pick another day... It's gotta be a weekend though, if it's a weekend I will do a little "channel-hopping" (as oposed to long distance pond-hopping") and come over to that island up there in the North for the Boderline show. Now that would make my December!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2000 08:39:29 EDT From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] The Mouth That Roared In a message dated 9/5/2000 3:30:08 AM Eastern Daylight Time, jenny cynically asked: << What are you pat, the list police?>> Methinks it's a question better put to SharonG, who started it all by criticizing me for announcing to the List that I was having Jack Williams in a House Concert at my home in a couple of weeks. And since when did doing so become a COMMERCIAL thing to do? Many of the people on this and the Shindell list live nearby and may not have ever had the chance to hear Jack Williams. I'm only glad I am in a position to provide that opportunity. I've never sen Jack peform either, though I own two of his CD's. But everyone I've talked to about him, from Dar, to Lucy, to Ellis Paul, just fave about his huge talent. The man is a legend among younger singer/songwriters it seems. What I think people really are beginning to object to on both LIsts, is the way certain people seem to think all of these Lists are forums for their own personal travelogues, diaries, private, interpersonal dialogues and spring boards to promoting themselves as ambassadors of sorts to the artists, as though they have a special "relationship" with them because they appear at virtually every venue they play. Personally, I'm tired of people opening the valise of their existence to everyone. I know, I know, all I have to do is scroll through them. And I do. But I resent like hell having to do it.. Fine. I'm glad that you and others can enjoy this 24-hour commercial for ShornaG. I don't. I'm not the only one. BUT . . . When I made a bee-line from the Hartford Airport to the Makor in my rental car I ended-up with some quality free time on my hands before Lucy's shows. But where to park in the middle of Manhattan on a workday? I ran into the Makor to ask "What is it with parking on this street? Some spaces have a meter and some don't....Are the ones without a meter free to anyone all day and night?" And the guy at the ticket counter (an Israeli guy) said, "Yes, and if you look out the door right now, you'll see someone about to leave. Go out and ask her if she'll wait for you to move your car over there and take her spot." And that's how I saved the $24 that I intended to spend for a secure 10 hours of parking at the Lincoln Center. I pulled my car into a (free) spot directly outside and visible to the people at the box office through the Makor's front door. With all of my Camp Dar fixin's neatly packed out-of-sight in the trunk I really began for the first time to relax into the city. This "gift" also put my car several blocks closer to Central Park than the ramp would have so that was the first place I went. A rather nice gift from the Makor (or from their parking angels at least!) It's a nice tradition to give and receive gifts when travelling. I must admit I am really bad at it. Sharon, when I think of something fitting, I'll send it your way with my hearty thanks and an apology for my bad manners! (FYI, your WFUV button is now hanging from a string of fluorites on my car's rear view mirror.) I think it is great when people let the list know of events, musicians, etc. Informing us of an upcoming house concert is not nearly as commercial as updates from Redhouse. What's the big deal? No one is spamming..... Quite frankly, I am glad to hear from so many on the list. I see now that there are many intelligent and articulate list members with similar/diverse interests. In Tara the horse was beheaded annually, in scrifice to the god of war, long ago. The ghost of which arises on full moons and in the stories of Ichabod Crane. I have often read of Lucy's excellence as a backup singer, and not much about her songwriting, her bringing together her education with her folk music, and her amazing power as a front-line singer. are any of these topics worth discussing, of have they been delt with by past discussion? I have noticed--living as I do on the outskirts of Edin, in the land of Nod, that many of my friends sit undder the trees in the Ashgrove and listen to her words. I have wondered why there appears to be a "second-class-singer" about her name, and wonder if her career would be furthered by taking on a new handle. I even wonder if she want's her career to further in the folk music world--might be nice to do a gig now and then, and have a life outside the world of music. I assume she has a life--Life tends to spawn beauty and music and harmony. All that I have heard of LK's music so far has seemed to me an invocation of that harmony. It is to invoke that harmony that I emerge from Lurkdom, land of Wails, waiting for the storm to pass. I am not an expert on the career of doctor kaplansky (correct me if i am wrong) , but that;s probably because she is so into doing cover versions, and doing crackin jobs of them... ANd she is a vocalist, a pure one... so many people respect her talent as a singer, back up and lead. Plus, i don't *think* lucy's ever written as much as she is now and that's why some people don't think of her writing immediately they hear her work. They think back to 'the tide' and the days of cover songs in teh village with shawn colvin.
