Thought you'd like to see her last minute response: PC : "Do you 'still' think it's much more fun playing in the UK? Are the audiences much different?" LK: "Actually, it's equally fun playing in both places, and the audiences are fundamentally the same: respectful, warm and gracious." PC: "Have you had any especially good gigs over here?" LK: "Probably my favorite place to play in the UK has been London, partly because the audiences have been so incredibly enthusiastic, and partly because I just love London so much. PC: "Will you still be concentrating on 'Ten Year Night' on the next trip? Any plans to bring a band? (I see you've been having a good time playing with Duke Levine, Zev Katz & Ben Wittman (your law firm, I hear!)." LK: "Yeah, mostly I'll be concentrating on 'Ten Year Night', but I've got some new songs I'll be playing too. No immediate plans to bring a band over, probably the first step will be to bring a guitar player, not sure if that'll happen this time." PC: "You've been getting a lot of radio airplay over here lately, with national BBC Radio 2 DJs like Bob Harris and Mike Harding both very enthusiastic, as well as with daytime presenters like Terry Wogan playing your single 'At the End of the Day'. Any plans to do any radio interviews?" LK: "Yeah, there's a national radio show I'll be doing at the beginning of my tour, can't remember the name of it (maybe Johnny Walker?)." PC: "Thanks Lucy - look forward to seeing you in November." Cactus Cafe, Austin. Tiny little venue. Another suggestion ... Aggie Theatre, Fort Collins, Colorado. Standing room only, bit intimidating, but typically hosts foot stomping folkgrass acts. In my view, the sound is horrendous, the space can be highly claustrophobic and outright dangerous--if ever there were a fire, no one would get out alive. But the food seems decent, they have a great selection of beer and woe be it for me to put down any NYC club that brings in folk acts. On New York City's outskirts, there is The Brokerage in Bellmore, Long Island, which is like a mini Bottom Line in many ways--average food, good sound and the requisite cue outside the club prior to the doors opening. Further east on Long Island is Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, another dive of a club that brings in great acts but charges Hamptons prices for tickets, with no reserved seating to speak of--decent food though. Both Lopng Island clubs have been booking folk acts for decades. Newer is the Folk Music Society of Huntington, a folk organization that brings in top folk, country and blues artists on the first Saturday of every month from September to May. Low prices, a great church with great acoustics and great munchies at the break. Lucika and Richard have played to jammed-to-the-rafters crowds here. It's a good thing. Most of the New York quality clubs have been mentioned already, I just wanted to give a favorable review to Bodle's, in Chester, NY (Orange County). The food is decent, the staff is goodhearted and the acts can be wonderful: I've seen Lucy, Janis Ian, Ellis Paul, Karen Savoca, Kate Campbell and others there.........it's a goodly-sized room, no bad views, and the stage is large enuf for the singer to breathe! I would say, it's roughly an hour and a half drive from the George Washington Bridge. Or possibly a teeny bit less, I tend to drive like an old school marm. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 13:45:13 EDT From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] venues 2 makor is a superterranean room in a brownstone the sound is good the problem is they are new and a commmunity center.the folk music is one of many nightly activities that they are developing and the staff are young and dont think things thru iron horse.. looks like a loft.. it has 2 levels a great stage.. and sound.. great afforable food and nice atmosphere in western mass hey walter you writing a book aoustic rooms in teh rich forum in stamford is a great room no one mentioned the pass your bucket clubs of new york and how did i forget the bitter end that TRULY famous.. bleeker street bar with the stage of dylan joan phil ochs they live on their reputation and its a 30 dollar night for sure... but another grandad try south easton -the black horse which is too small for lucy but a celtic bar that entertains music house conerts.. jodi i think there is one in southern jersey that i havent seen.. your home the best houseconcert patty romanoff's back yard- she lit a fire and we roasted marshmellows and peter mulvey played it was fall in new england and the best i have experienced.. no where in nyc can you light a campfire.. off to western mass and our girl... sharonG ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V2 #222 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
