For anyone who missed it, "Singer/Songwriter" Lucy Kaplansky (with black jacket, sans guitar) handled herself with aplomb on "The Early Show" today in a roundtable with Michael Feldman and Margaret Cho. I thought she came across as the best of the three of them, in fact. Most of it was discussion of the specific "Survivor" characters---Lucy had thought Gervase was going to win before he got voted off, and now she thinks it will be Colleen, Kelly, or Rudy (she can't decide further). She identifies with Colleen for being nice and not a jerk (a reason a lot of us identify with Lucy, after all!). And she even handled the question dreaded by anyone with any pschology background--- including those of us who were merely psych majors in college--- "So, you've studied this stuff, what do you make of all this?" She thinks we should all stop feeling guilty and voyeurish watching the show because the people on it want to be watched anyway. Hooray---no more "Survivor"-watching guilt, as per Lucy! (Now I REALLY want Lucy to be in roundtables for all the other shows I feel guilty about watching!) There was only one thing missing...I kept willing Bryant Gumbel to say, "So, Lucy, would you please get your guitar and sing for us now?" No dice. Well, maybe next time... Instead I got to hear about Fords stroke 8 times and how they found a way ti stop skin cancer 6 times :( If anyone taped Lucy this morning I would be more than thrilled to have a copy. CBS briefly flashed a notice during the segment saying you could learn more about the panelists at their Web site, http://www.cbs.com/ I went there and discovered that they offer streaming videos of these discussions, so, Kristen, you can see Lucy on the CBS Web site. The catch is you have to be willing to download the Microsoft Media Player. :-( Lucy looked good and sounded intelligent this a.m. I agree with her that "Survivor" viewers need not feel guilty for being voyeurs--that the participants are all exhibitionists and want to be watched. On the other hand, I get very uncomfortable when the discussion makes fun of people; e.g., by Bryant Gumbel drawing attention to the celebratory dance one of the contestants did when he won the immunity challenge. I hope "The Early Show" brings Lucy back to sing soon. Or to comment on something more serious than "Survivor." Better yet, I hope "The Today Show" saw Lucy and that they invite her over. Then I'd have no reason ever to watch Bryant Gumbel again. If that is the song, it made me cry the first time I saw her solo live, when I went to Hightstown with my husband a couple of years ago. Wish she'd play it more often... And it was darn inconvenient, too, cuz it's on the same night that I host a large open drum jam on the Mississippi River in the summer. I taped it while watching in the corner of my eye because I was scurrying about the house a lot trying to get my car loaded with the gear and get to the river by sunset. I actually got to watch it with full attention when I got home about 2:15 AM. I must say, (although I watch almost NO commercial, prime time TV), the show itself exceeded my expectations. It was very intelligent, had dramatic moments and was a visual feast. The "new-age, world-beat" soundtrack added a surreal dimension to it. I alternated flashing back to the Gilligan's Island of my childhood and my Peace Corps stint half a mile from the Indian Ocean in Equatorial Africa. Oppressive humidity and 24-hour bathing suit days--been there done that! Lucy's appearance on the Survivor discussion was magnificent. She was effervescent and cheerful, her insights were thoughtful and the hair she spends so much time worrying about was magnificent. (Who among you were present during Lucy's FRFF mainstage set when John Gorka tried to slip her a compliment, saying "Lucy, you have wonderful festival hair" and poor Lucy didn't know how to take it, getting all defensive and such.) So let me be the first to report that this morning Lucy had magnificent "survivor" hair! If Lucy becomes something of a media darling right about now--between CD projects--all I can say is that it couldn't happen to a more intelligent, pleasant and multifaceted person...one who has the life experiences within her to project a visage of genuine depth and breadth. Congratulations, Lucy, on succeeding in letting the very special light we've all found in you shine before a live audience of millions. (It must have been terrifying!) Besides the prospect of the Greg Brown tribute album, does anyone out there have any idea of a timetable for the next collection of Lucy songs to come out on CD? Next Spring would make two years between disks which seems reasonable. Congratulations, Lucy, >on succeeding in letting the very special light we've all found in you shine before a live audience >of millions. I'm torn here between my happiness for her success, and my fear that she may become just big enough to put her in the same class as her old friend, Shawn Colvin, and similar artists. After one or two major "pop" crossovers, they become too expensive to book into small venues of 200-400, where they really shine for me, and not enough of a draw for the stadiums and sheds. Tours of in-between venues are probably only borderline profitable for the artist, especially if they have a band along with them. I count my blessings I was able to book Lucy last year rather than this year. I'm sure I probably wouldn't have been able to afford it now. I don't mean any of this as a slight against Lucy. I'm just expressing a fear that maybe others here have too, that once our "little secret musical treat" is well-known, we'll lose the accessability and closeness we feel (however imagined it might be) to her. Anyone else have some thoughts on this? I converted my first Lucy fan today! :-) Guy in my office was talking about compiling a tape of bitter, revengeful songs (suffice to say, he has *issues* with his ex-wife), and I suggested The Thief ... luckily (lucyly?!), I had Flesh And Bone with me, and I loaned him it. He not only listened to the whole CD, he plans to buy a copy, and was most interested when I mentioned Lucy's UK visit in December! When I told him that Lucy was a psychologist in a former life, he commented that he'd noticed the insightfulness of her lyrics (especially in Still Life). I'm gonna take in Ten Year Night tomorrow ... Greg posed: > I don't mean any of this as a slight against Lucy. I want to continue to be leaning on the stage of the Borderline when Lucy comes to London (just right of centre ... don't even *try* to take it! :-), but I can't deny that I'd like to see her take over the world and convert everyone to her music. Ultimately, though, if the universe was put to rights, and Lucy was playing Wembley Stadium the same night Britney Spears was doing a house concert at my neighbours', I'd be in the crush at the soccer ground! :-) Dave. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 15:34:33 EDT From: Fantine729@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Lucy "survives" the bright lights! At the same time, I too sometimes fear losing the smile and wave that I so often get from her as I stand in her merch line. But, I have to remind myself that Lucy owes me nothing. I don't own her and she doesn't answer to me or any of us! Like for anyone whom I care about in my life (whether they be key players or cameo appearances), I want them to be happy, as trite as it sounds. The minute it appears that getting up on that stage is no longer fun for Lucy (or for any others whose shows I attend), the magic will be gone for me. My wish for Lucy is that she follow her heart and be true to herself....and ultimately, that she is happy. I am reminded of the many times I tried to keep fireflies alive in jars as a child....and it never worked! As much as I love knowing Lucy even in the littlest way, I know we can't keep her to ourselves...her light will go out if we try. Nor am I suggesting that this is what Greg or anyone else means....not at all; I'm merely musing to myself on this topic. And, I guess I'm idealistic enough to believe that no matter HOW big she gets, she won't forget those of us who "knew her when." In the meantime, I just wish her well and treasure the time she does offer to me and to her other fans when she crosses our paths...those times will never be taken away!!
