At this point, the following acts have been booked [Erica Wheeler, Billy Jonas, Jack Williams, and One Drum (with David Stocker :-) ], with a few other main stage positions yet to be finalized - the remaining slots will be filled by Florida performers; returning 2000 songwriter competition winners (Bill Ward, Chris Chandler, Kate Long); and the 2001 Top Twenty contestants, doing "in-the-rounds". The ads for our songwriters competition are currently in Performing Songwriter and Dirty Linen magazines - check out the details below. [Unfortunately this year I will not be a preliminary judge (guess I had to give someone else a chance - sob!), but in my new position of artist liaison, I will continue to book the Borders gigs the Friday night before the festival, in addition to coordinating home hospitality, transportation, camping needs, etc.] I've said before that January in South Florida is a lovely place to be, so enter early and often! - if you're not a songwriter, come on down anyway... :-) <> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 11:33:07 EDT From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy and John G. Just wanted to let certain Lucy fanatics know that Dr. K appears twice in the John Gorka's The Artist's Profile video. I've watched the video nearly a half dozen times and it is a must for any Gorka fan. And if you're a guitar player, you get to see where John capos on many of his song as well as some of the voicings he uses. It's helped improve my playing of certain Gorka songs immeasurably. He has some great things to say about the creative writing process and the selection of songs is first rate. And Michael Manring does an amazing job with that bass of his, alternately making it sound like a cello, violin, lead guitar and string bass. I know it's not perfect, but this video is really a great thing to have. The piece first mentions Mary Chapin Carpenter, then goes on to mention Richard Thompson, and then goes on to: "Mr. Thompson, one of the leaders of the late-1960's British folk-rock movement, has inspired many artists, including a few on the festival's bill like Lucy Kaplansky. Once part of a duo with Shawn Colvin, Ms. Kaplansky, who now writes her own material, included Mr. Thompson's defiant "When I Get to the Border" on her debut album "The Tide." One of the most impressive voices in contemporary folk, she formed Cry Cry Cry, the critically acclaimed trio, with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell. Ms. Kaplansky, who has a doctorate in psychology, possesses a plaintive voice, and her succinct phrasing and eloquent original material leave her unrivaled." Short, but very nicely put.
