Next time you have Lucy's ear to bend, you might inquire whether she'll be bringing a petit or even a grande band with her to FRFF. I know it can be a logistical nightmare--and it's supposed to be fun for everyone, not just the fans--but we who've not seen her perform that way live before would be getting a heckuva Bang for the Buck if she did! As for the "slop" I mentioned for the FRFF schedule, I meant for the organizers to tell the mainstage artists they have 'x' minutes, but then schedule them for 'x + 15' minutes. If at some point during the day Try Try Try decides they wanna try it that evening, then there's an extra hour hidden in the schedule for them to take the stage. If they decide not to, well then each of the mainstage artists gets a little extra time they hadn't counted on. Yesterday I wrote: "....This is purely a momento for the fans and a Lucy promotional tool but, unless Lucy says it's OK in these pages or in-person, I might feel a bit guilty about knocking off and mailing copies of it for others like myself caught in the "black-out" areas...." Well, I certainly know the law in this matter (regarding copyrights and royalties) but it cannot be denied that despite the fact that some very tasteful, talented and well-intentioned benefactors may have funded this, it is primarily a tool to get the word out about Lucy and her magical presence and to bring more people to her music. Ever had a potential new fan "waffling" on the eve before a Lucy show? I'm looking forward to using my newly purchased, fully-paid video to help alleviate that "unknown commodity" effect and warm up new fans before Lucy comes to town. Rest assured that I would never take money for the tape or the service. I learned my licks from more than a dozen years steeped in the underground psychedelic "jam" band scene (with the likes of the New Orleans Radiators, Grateful Dead, String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon, etc.) where live show taping and tape TRADING are officially endorsed as long as no fees are involved. That's in my past, though. I don't tape anymore. Ignorance of the Law is no excuse! Arlo Guthrie learned that painful lesson when he littered in Stockbridge, Massachusetts (a mere 15 miles from the festival!) and missed out on a good portion of his Thanksgiving dinner weekend at Alices Restaurant. (BTW If anyone begins strummin' the chords to that one for me I can do the whole Part I of the Massacree by heart any day of the week....) ETimothy asked: > don'tcha think The Criers > will find it positively irresistible once they are all three together > again, hanging out at the same three-day festival? You know, in a lot of ways, strange as it may seem, I hope not. Unlike certain people I could mention (you know who you are, goldberg! :-), I only saw Cry3 once, at Falcon Ridge 1999. It was one of the musical highlights of my three weeks in the northeast USA. But Cry3 was a limited edition ... fifteen months from CD release to farewell performance. The people involved have moved on. This time around I want to see whole sets from Dar, and Lucy, and Richard. And if they guest in each other's sets, then all well and good. But any full-on reunion is surely bound to cheapen the original, as well as being a scheduling nightmare and something of an insult to the other mainstage acts ... who exactly is going to tell Patty Larkin or Janis Ian to get off stage 15 minutes early so that the trio can indulge themselves? Of the possibility of reforming another group you might have heard of, Paul McCartney said that you cannot reheat a souffle. Cry3 was great while it lasted, but it's over now, and the sooner we accept that, the sooner we can get on with appreciating the music of the individual performers. Cry3 should be a great memory of a brief collaboration between three outstanding talents ... it should not be an albatross around their necks.
