Unfortunately, the Times doesn't post articles from the local sections to the web. Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 12:55:49 -0500 From: Bill Wynn Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy in OKC Friday night Lucy played a nearly sold out show at the Blue Door in Oklahoma City. This was Lucy's third time in OKC, and I believe only her 4th in Oklahoma, and she seemed quite happy with the turnout. The Blue Door is a wonderful venue, small and very intimate, and a favorite of performers such as Chris Smither, Ellis Paul, Don Conoscenti and many others. I believe long ago it used to be a house, then was converted to some sort of shop before becoming a music room. The proprietor also lives there, and Lucy pointed out to the audience that he's single, evidenced by the fact the place has no kitchen! Lucy played several new songs (I don't believe she mentioned the titles) including one to be featured in an upcoming film in which she also appears (as herself). She also played an older song she described as the "prequel" to her trilogy of angry songs including "Turn the Lights Back On." I'd asked her to play either "Edges" (which I've asked for in vain before) or "Still Life" (which I thought was a safe bet). So of course she played "Still Life," which was fine by me. Liz Masters (my musical collaborator and a fellow member of this illustrious list) made the 90 minute drive down from Tulsa with me, as did a recent convert to the cause. I fell confident in stating that a good time was had by all, and we also met some other Tulsans who had made the journey as well. I guess we were all getting started being hell bent on Saturday...although no-one seemed inordinately murderous. Lucy played two sets of 40 minutes or so each, with a two song encore. Here's the set list as best as I can recall, and not necessarily in order: End of the Day The Thief Scorpion Love is the Ride For Once in Your Life Ten Year Night The Ballad of Mary Magdalene Turn the Lights Back On Speaking With the Angel This is Mine Still Life One Good Reason By Way of Sorrow I.K.'s "Song About Pi" and excerpts from "That's Mathematics" If You Could See I think she played "Five in the Morning" too. Also there were three new songs, the older "angry" one I hadn't heard, a Steve Earl song I didn't know, and one or two other covers. I'm told some of the Blue Door shows wind up being broadcast on a local OKC station, which I will endeavor to verify and look into the possibility of obtaining a recording. If indeed this is true (and if this show is one of the lucky ones) I'll post again regarding copies. And in her well known endearing lack of all geographic conceptualization, Lucy asked me where she was in relation to Kansas. This was the same question she'd asked me the last time she was here, when she also clarified her belief that Oklahoma might border Texas. On stage at a C3 show a year ago in Lawrence, Kansas she made similar comments involving Kansas and Missouri, prompting the audience to crack up later following the "failing tests in geography" line from "The Kid." The next night in St. Louis after playing the song it suddenly dawned on her what had happened in Lawrence, saying "I just figured out why everyone was laughing last night!" But nobody can possible know everything, and I'm pretty damn sure Lucy can out sing, out write, and out perform just about any cartographer on the planet! Sorry for the excessive length of this post, Bill ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 13:23:07 -0500 From: Bill Wynn Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Lucy in OKC I just got this from "The Blue Door Digest" for April 9th: "It was a week of great performances at The Blue Door. Slaid Cleaves and Fred Eaglesmith put on a wonderful show for a small, but appreciative audience on Wednesday night. There was talk of both coming back on a weekend in the future, when we assume more of you can come out. On Friday night, Lucy Kaplansky made her Blue Door debut and charmed a full house with her wonderful songs and beautiful voice. We would like to thank everyone who came out to the shows.....especially those who were attending a show at The Blue Door for the first time. We hope you come back soon!!!!!" ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V2 #91 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
