The festival of my dreams will be rather small cuz it will take place in the back yard of the house I used to live in before I moved here. Should fit about 150 people, lovely wild, untended garden with a bond fire-place whatever it's called ... big trees around it, perfect for a summer night concert, or two, or ten... :-) The line up will be as follows, no partiuclar oder: Ellis Paul Peter Mulvey Lucy Kaplansky Dar Williams Richard Shindell Mark Erelli Cliff Eberhardt Joan Baez Mary Chapin Carpenter Vance Gilbert Lyle Lovett The Nields Catie Curtis and then to round things up a little acoustic set by Jamiroquai, even though I'm not sure how'd they come across all acoustic. We could throw in a jam session with Tom Waits, that would be very cool as well. Oh, and Sting, there should definitely be an all acoustic set by Sting, yup, I can see it... looking good.... alright, I'll tune back into life now... happy weekend! My fiance and I met at a concert at a chapel. We are going to be married there in October. That particular venue has closed to music, but the music moved to another church. Others are small restaurants and taverns. I know of three in this area that are literally barns. Some concerts are given in high school auditoriums, others in small community theaters. A few of the restaurants have "music rooms" apart from the main dining area. In some cases, people open their homes and people attending bring snacks to share. At one place in Pennsylvania, the concerts are outdoors. But if it rains, they move inside to the town council room. I have seen Lucy in many of these venues, including three times in a barn (at Wolftrap). Prices go from a donation (at a house concert) to $10 at some small restaurants and up to $25 at some of the clubs. Re: In your dreams festival. This is an interesting thread. My fiance and I have had similar discussions, although ours is just the opposite - -- we have a list of people we have seen and have not enjoyed. This is a small list, thankfully, and we see a lot of music -- four festivals last summer, an average of three concerts a month the rest of the year. Since I play in a bluegrass band, I get to hear a lot of bluegrass while waiting to play at concerts and festivals. Our "dream" is to organize a festival of these artists so others will attend, which would leave us free to see the people we really want to see and have them all to ourselves. I won't share the list of performers on our list. We each have our own tastes, and my favorites -- with the exception of Lucy -- probably wouldn't jibe with those of the rest of this list. However, if we ever get to organize our "festival" we will be sure to invite you all. ;) I must say that Lucy would never play this "festival," so you all probably wouldn't attend. Part of the fun of going to a festival is not only seeing the people you know and love, but also seeing new people and hearing new voices. That's also one of the joys of attending concerts with opening acts. Although we've found that some of the opening acts don't appeal to us, we've also "discovered" some of our favorite artists as opening acts. Lucy is a prime example. I knew of her as a back-up singer for John Gorka. When she opened for him several years ago at the Barns of Wolftrap, I was an immediate fan and have gone to see her at every opportunity since. The same thing happened with Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster, who I saw at a bluegrass festival a few years back. I had never heard her music before. Now I have all of her CDs. The dream festival, in my mind, does exist. Along with some of my favorites -- Hugh Blumenfeld, Cliff Eberhardt and Trout Fishing in America, the Nields sisters, will be a host of others -- 18 days of music -- In Kerrville, Texas, this May and June. I'm guaranteed to see and hear someone new. I'll go to the Ballad Tree, where they draw names from a hat and everyone performs a song, and see songwriters from all over the country. I'll go to campfires and hear and meet new people. I can participate and share my own songs, too. We went for a week last year. This year, we're going for the whole festival. I guess this is true for other folks with the successful artists whom they loved in the earliest days of their careers. I would think that R. T. would be a very welcome addition to the in-yer-dreams gig and I was suggesting a substitution, based on your list. It seems, however, that some folks are ignoring one of the rules....that rule being to choose their dream performers from those who actually have been known to perform lately (hey, I'd like Joni Mitchell to be there, too! How about Jerry Garcia with Dave Grisman?) This was not meant to be a millennial popularity contest, but rather an excercise to discover who is most excited about which performers out there right now, because of their charm, the quality of their live shows or the strength of a new CD they have out. (I even put in ones that I have yet to see on the strength of others' recommendations, their new CD, etc.) If I go to a festival this summer and see one of the new names from this exercise on the program, I'm very likely to stroll over to that stage and check them out. Anyway, my guest list would be as follows: Lucy Kaplansky Kris Delmhorst Peter Mulvey, with Goody David Stocker, with Julio Pabon Magda Hiller Susan Werner Catie Curtis Vance Gilbert Lori McKenna Ellis Paul Natalie Merchant I'd like to see a music-free, stand-up comedy workshop with Mulvey, Paul, Gilbert and Werner! Well, according to Jackson Browne fanatics, you will never see Joni Mitchell and Jackson on the same stage. She wrote a song about him as a woman beater and as a person who drove his wife to suicide, so they obviously are not on the best of terms. I say , "Don't take sides, enjoy the music."
