She reminded me of a mix of Katrell Keineg and that woman who backed Natalie Merchant on her sessions at 54th Street. Susan has a rich voice. she explained she spent many years busking in dublin, she sang a mix of ol' time sea shanty songs about ireland and london and her own music. She haad three guitar friends with her and she played the acoustic and that neat drum. i need the help here. with the drum - it is a traditonal insttrument played with a short stick, waved back and forth. she also sang in both languages and tried to explain the Irish dialect from the Scottish, This cheesy american didnt get it can I get some help.. she has a new cd coming out on Green Linnet of traditional music she spoke about the Lovely Irish songwriters organization that camps em away for three weeks and are looking for american songwriters to exchange, tehy give ya great digs, and food and ya have to write 3 songs... her encore was a killer of son of a preacher man and I learned Aretha passed on it first... she sang a bit from each cd and though i missed Kris Delmhosrt at JOhnnyD's by a week, I am glad i went.. also it was a meeting of some dar list people organized by joe sarah Twombly and Tina wheeler and Keith Richardson and I got a chance to hang out. that was nice.. next up Shindell on Long Island...will he sing 10 year night if I ask him... sharonG ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 13:55:41 EST From: FISH1994@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] susan Mckeown with help from my friends Hi Sharon The drum is called a bodhran, and I am not sure exactly why, except "bo" is Gaelic for cow, so perhaps it refers to the skin of the drum. I don't know......maybe some of the Scottish friends on the list can tell you more about it. In any event, welcome back from your travels and if you know offhand when Mary Chapin Carpenter will be at Appel Farm can ya let me know.
