Well, has anybody sent you out to get Peter Mulvey's new brilliant, amazing, mind boggeling, groovy, beautiful album "the trouble with poets" yet? Oh, and obscure, too, probably. and on a final note, and I really didn't want to get into this, but: Susan said: > It is up to each one of us to read it or not read it, get it or not get it - > however, we should all feel free to Just Do It! exactly! Some posts I delete, some I read, for very different reasons, spelling was never one of them though. But to each their own. Just please, let's not make this an issue any further. Just don't read what you don't want to. If this is all we have to worry about, well... enjoy your Sunday folks, listen to some good music, go to a show... It has been DAYS since I was sent hurtling out to the record store for yet another (to me) obscure artist recommended by a lister. You folks have some mighty sharp ears. Thank goodness. >> Sounds good to me. And may I say that I am loving the new Peter Mulvey record, "The Trouble With Poets" immensely. I confess to not being particularly enamored with his previous album, "Blue" but this one rocks my world. Like Patty Griffin's impossibly brilliant "Flaming Red" Mulvey's new record isn't exactly folk. But the music is so well thought out and the lyrics so clever, intelligent and poetic that any folk lover would come under Mulvey's formidable spell. My favorite cut, "Wings Of The Rag Man" is always on repeat and in fact the whole CD doesn't seem to want to leave my CD player. Mulvey, as most of you well know, opened for Cry Cry Cry in a few venues. I'm on the list. I got the post the first time. I don't need it all again. If you need to quote, please only quote the appropriate section. It's common courtesy, it's lazy not to, it makes your posts more readable (insert any of the "use of grammar/spelling/capitalization" justifications here: they all work). To quote, selectively, from the guidelines sent out to every subscriber to another music discussion list (the Dar List): > When responding to a posting, please try to avoid the extensive > quoting of previous posts. Use just enough previous content to > provide context for your response. Simply echoing someone else's > post and adding "I agree" or "Hear hear" is silly. Radical departure from the apparent norm here, but I'm going to talk about music now! Last night saw Catie Curtis playing at the Borderline in London, and she brought out a nice size of crowd with a thoroughly enjoyable performance covering much of her body of work. Jimmy Ryan, as always, performed his accompanist routine to perfection. A pity the show kicked off so late (and was thus kicked out to make way for the 11pm rave): Catie seemed more than willing to play for longer. As I remarked to her myself while getting some things signed (expect a postcard, frog :-), she should start earlier next time! Oh, yes, Kay and I, after seeing Fantasia 2000 at the IMAX, met up with Jon, Paul, and (not *the*) Sharon for some food. Hint, Kay chose something than began with P, ended with A, and had, amongst other things, a Z in the middle :-) Hi also to Adrian and Adi, both of whom are lovely people. I agree, Ron, that Deep Blue was not Peter's greatest moment, but this new one is a big return to form. Incidentally, if you like TTWP, you should sidle on over to Peter's website and pick up a copy of his fan-only live CD, Glencree, recorded in Ireland (where he'll be in a couple of weeks ... as will I to see him). Now, with regard to this discussion, it's pretty much been a waste of bandwidth and time as I'm sure that not one opinion has been changed one way or the other. Still, I suppose like any household, there are going to be squabbles every now and then. It helps to clear the air, I suppose. The point I'd like to make, however, is that I joined the list to write and *read* about Lucy's music -- I didn't sign up to read poetry in the making. It's a shame that I'll miss a lot of what's being said because form is more important than content. Pat ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 09:42:37 CST From: "Chris Tilden" Subject: [lucy-list] Review -- Lawrence, Kansas Hi all. I have been off the list for a couple months (just re-subbed today), so I apologize if I am covering old ground. I saw my first solo Lucy show Thursday night and thought I would give you all a glimpse. Except Sharon -- she's too busy seeing Susan McKeown and Ellis and on and on -- just kidding, sharong! I don't "do" set lists, but she played primarily material from Ten Year Night, and Scorpion and Flesh and Bone off of Flesh and Bone. She did a couple of songs off the Tide -- I don't remember which ones -- except for Guinevere, which was her encore, along with Wichita Lineman. She said she had always wanted to sing that song in Kansas (although in reality I think that song is about the Wichita in Texas, not Kansas. I should know because I live here, but I'm not sure). She sang Wichita Lineman first and then asked for requests. People blurted out "Broken Wings" (J. Miller song?), My Love Will Follow You (B. Miller song on Richard's new album with Lucy and Dar backing, of course) and some other non-Lucy songs. I don't know if anyone actually asked for a LUCY song. I wanted to request "If You Could See" because I have never heard her do it live on any of the tapes that many wonderful friends have sent my way and it's one of my favorite Lucy songs. But I had a feeling she wouldn't sing it. So I cheated and blurted out "Guinevere!" which I knew she likes to do in her encores. And she didn't disappoint. In addition to that material, she sang a number of new songs including one she says was commissioned for an upcoming movie. She was very guarded about talking about the movie, but said that they liked the song so much that it has been discussed that she actually have a role in the movie -- playing "a fictional folk singer named Lucy Kaplansky." She said she didn't think that would be too difficult. I can't remember titles of the new songs, but I thought they were wonderful. Too bad it will be awhile before the next LK release. For the fashion conscious, she was mostly in black, with a top banded with white fake fur. She said it was from her mom, who has great fashion sense and loves to buy Lucy clothes. Oh, and Lucy also performed two of her father's songs about math. That was a stitch. I've gone too long. Thanks for listening. I hope my grammar was acceptable for the masses! Catie's London concert on Saturday night, and the set at HMV the day before. The HMV appearance was a little farcical to begin with - - the time mysteriously changed from 1.30 to 5.30 without warning, and HMV didn't actually manage to advertise it in their main window. Those of us who made it there got 6 songs, including a new one (Jane) and a request (The Wolf). The foot percussion effects were absent, but it was a good set, and when I looked behind me at the end, there were alot more people than there had been at the beginning, and a queue for the signing session formed very quickly. A good sign:-) As for the gig itself, well a bunch of us met up for a bite to eat first (and yes, we did go to Pizza Hut!), getting to the venue early enough to be at the front of the queue. (Also early enough to see Catie arrive, and not get let in!) We got our positions at the front, and then got an enjoyable set from Catie and Jimmy Ryan, taken from the 3 CDs, together with a few non-album tracks, and some requests. (If anybody wants a setlist, I can probably put one together.) Plus tales of Catie's language mistakes in Holland, and the bad dream she'd had the previous night because her hotel room smelled of fresh paint:-) As is the norm at the Borderline, performers get kicked off the stage at 10.30, and Catie was still signing away by the time everybody got shunted out and upstairs. They didn't try to smoke us out by using Cilla Black this time though (well, it failed as a tactic after the Lucy K gig in December). Another good night at the Borderline:-) Kay PS Paul, earlier today I think I saw an ad' for Shelby Lynne at the Embassy Rooms in October. If I can confirm that, it would probably be a better venue to see her than the Shepherds Bush Empire anyway. ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
