My daughter and I caught him at The Turning Point last Thursday night--this tiny, subterranean, brick-walled and venerable venue on the other (guess which) side of the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York. Whenever he did a song from "After Yesterday," an impossibly brilliant album that was terribly overlooked when it debuted in late 1998, it was hard not to hear the ghost of Lucy's voice since she sang harmony on so many of this record's tracks. In fact, in my opinion, Lucy's harmony work on this album is the best I've ever heard from her or anyone else and underscores just how remarkable a singer she is. Her voice, blended with John's, adds quite a dimension to these wonderful songs. If you haven't heard "After Yesterday" may I suggest you go to PlayHear or CDNow (the former is the official CD retailer link with Music Matters Review) and give a listen to "Cyprus Trees" or "Thorny Patch" and see if you don't agree how incredible Lucy's harmonies are. It was great seeing Gorka again, who will be at Falcon Ridge this year, thanks be to God. He's one of the true gentleman geniuses of folk. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. RootinRon P.S. Lucy loves to tell this story, and I quote: "The other day, my friend, John Gorka, asked me if I knew that the word 'gullible' wasn't in the dictionary. I said, 'Really?'" Typical Gorka quirkiness. A real smart ass. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000 10:39:35 EST From: FISH1994@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Gorka Gawking Wow, I was at the 9:30 show at TTP, I wonder if you were there or at the early show..........I thought he was great, I must say I'm a sucker for "The Pilot Light is Out on Our Oven of Love"........ If Gordon Lightfoot was in town the same night (but not playing together.)..... as Richard Shindell and possibly Buddy/Julie Miller with RS. Which would you attend??? This happens to Richard every time he comes this way. Some other show puts him at a disadvantage. Also, We will/can invoke the mid week drive rule and be able to see RS the next night/or night before for our "private" concert at our friend's bar and restaurant. I've got a new job and get to spend the week in the city. Haven't found a complete Bottom Line schedule for that week and am wondering what else might be happening. I know Lucy won't be around (boo hoo). I'll be car-less so the Turning Point is out. Seeing Richard Shindell tomorrow night in Berkeley (I'll be wearing my Nancinet button if any Lucy-heads are planning to attend). Reading the John Gorka reviews, I miss Lucy with Richard too. Even before Cry3, Lucy & Ricky did some amazing shows together. susan (hoping it's not too cold in NY because I don't have a winter coat anymore since I moved out of that fair city 6 years ago) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000 13:14:34 EST From: Witchaywm@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Re: lucy-list-digest V2 #63 In a message dated 3/11/00 10:19:51 AM Central Standard Time, Scharri@aol.com writes: << If Gordon Lightfoot was in town the same night (but not playing together.)..... as Richard Shindell and possibly Buddy/Julie Miller with RS.
