My name is Walter (no Mr Wolfe's please!). Nanci, 1st June, damn we are away then, what a drag. Glad you enjoyed Prine & Dement, we missed that too. The Tom Paxton show was nice, except that he shared the bill with four other Folkies (they described themselves as the Five Old Folkies, as opposed to the Three Tenors!). They were all good in their way, but five seperate acts on the one bill does not give any the chance to to themsleves justice. First up was Archie Fisher, a gentle and melodic singer whom we enjoyed very much. Archie seemd to carry the weight of considerable experience & age on his shoulders and it came out nicely in his songs. He was followed by two old style Scottish Rabble Rousers called Brian McNeill and Dick Gaughan. We found these guys a bit too political and raucous, and The 'Death to the English, Our Land Belongs to Us, and Kick Out The Royal Family' rhetoric a bit tiresome, Mrs Liz Windsor is alright in my book. Then came Paxton. I just love the way the guy writes songs. Cherubic face, old Lenin style cap, the voice deeper but still fine. Tom's set was all too short, highlights were a rousing 'Can't help but wonder where I'm bound' and 'Ramblin' Boy'. we then had an Aussie domiciled Scot called Eric Bogle, who was terrific, despite having flu. After the break they all played together. This was alright up to a point, but I felt a wee bit cheated that we only saw a little of Paxton on his own. Call me old fashioned, and I bet you will, but I remain a fan! Walter ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 14:36:59 -0500 From: "Kristina Plath" Subject: [lucy-list] YAHOOOOO!!!!! (AKA Lucy in Oxford) Hi!!! Oh, it was a night to remember. I know there were other LL members there, so I hope I'm not stealing anyone's thunder in writing a review. Ok, lemme add that the reason I haven't been around much is that I got sick on Thursday and I needed to heal so I'd be able to see Lucy. So I stayed on the couch like a good girl. Gawd the boredom.... Anyway, I was well enough to see Lucy. There was a blizzard on the way, but still my parents took me. They're good folks. Froghead had sent me a Lucy Nite Package, which had arrived Thursday. There were tissues and cards and pictures and some other cool stuff.... I opened it while sitting in the car in front of the Night Eagle. Also included was a card for Dr. K that I was to give to her from Jenny. Ok!! Gotta say, if there's anybody out there in the central NY region who knows about that little place called the Night Eagle that books great acts.... but isn't sure about it.... it's two hours away or not on highways or something.... really, it's worth it. I would drive from NYC to see someone like Lucy or Dar there. The crowd is about 90 people, and there isn't a bad seat in the place. Great coffee, great cake, great atmosphere, art exhibits and cool beads and t-shirts and great stuff!! The sounds is excellent, too. And if you go, before the show, catch a bite of the *best* Italian food I've ever had (and I'm Italian!) at this place across the street from the Night Eagle called Roma's.... it's the greatest. Ok, I just had to offer that plug. I don't work there, but it's the best place... Ok, so after some good-a Italian food-a, we headed back across the street to get our seats. I craned my neck desperately, trying to catch a glimpse of the elusive Dr. K, and make sure she wasn't an imposter. : ) And there she was!! Wey-hey!! I had Froggy's card in my sack, along with the tissues and money for TYN, cuz I gotta buy her CD's now, not keep listening to froggy's tapes. She made me promise to buy TYN if I liked it. So then she came on!! Ken (the owner of the NE) said, aptly, "Ok, folks, it's Superbowl Sunday and there's a blizzard on the way, and still this was a sell-out, and there aren't any no-shows. So it's clear that you're not here to see me talk, you really love Lucy!!" Applause, applause. She opened with The Kid, and proceeded to play a lot of songs from TYN, a couple from Flesh and Bone, and a few new ones. She looked great and her voice sounded really good. Ok, any better adjectives?? : ) Then it was intermission, and I took off on my mission. Lucy was just sitting there next to the CD table with Rick.... talking to people, signing things... so I bought my TYN and then walked up and held up Froghead's card. I told her it was from Froghead, and she said, "You know JENNY?!!" I nearly melted. Yeah! She's my best friend!! So it went like that for awhile... I told her I loved TYN, and asked for her to play Mary-Magdalen.... and said thank you.... she was SO SWEET!!! really friendly and nice and all that good stuff!! (More original adjectives.) The second half was mostly requests, which was good. She did a rockin' Turn the Lights Back On that had a few of us lip-synching along. Lucy asked how many of us were on her "e-mail list" and I raised my hand, and so did quite a few others!!! Whoo hoo!! Her encore was "Still Life".... and then she was gone. The snow had been falling since the first half, and there was nearly three inches. Lucy had said she had a new car that had all wheel drive, so she was kind of excited about driving in the snow with it. We parked next to her. It's a black Audi, btw. Hope she made it home okay. Those roads were bad. Well, that's my report. It was a great night. The best concert I've been to, easy. This was her second time to the Night Eagle, which means I can assume she'll be back sometime. And I'll be there. As long as Jenny sends me another card. Next time I won't be sick the night before, and I will bring brownies.
