I've been a Lucy fan for some time now, but was already getting the Dar-list stuff, and can only keep up with so much. I'm Adam Orenstein, and subscribed knowing I'd soon be seeing Lucy in a rare Florida appearance at a Jewish community center in West Palm Beach. It was a great setting for a solo show--like a nightclub -- with round tables with candles on them, and a nice plate of cookies. Lucy's in-laws are evidently from the area, and all turned up for the show. My friend Rory and I drove over from Clearwater, a good five hour drive, and stayed the night at an oceanfront hotel on nearby Singer Island. I somehow survived through the show with minimal coughing on my part (I'd had this fear of single-handedly ruining the show for everyone). After the show, when we were talking with Lucy, I'd mentioned that I was polite enough to stay far enough away so as not to give her the flu bug I've been getting over (turns out now it's developed into bronchitis bordering on pneumonia), and she thanked me in such a way as to convey that too many other people are oblivious to such considerations. Remember people, if a performer gets such a two-week bug, she/he might need to cancel part of their tour, depriving the performer of much needed earnings, and depriving a multi-city audience of the shows they were looking forward to. What a show, though! They actually held a Sabbath candle ceremony outside the auditorium before the doors opened--a unique concert occurrence? My favorite performance of the night was I Know What Kind of Love This Is, which was much slower and more intimate than the CCC version. She also sang a Hebrew song to try to impress us (Ya-a-sae Shalom is the transliteration). I would have tried to scream out a request for My Name Joe, but was too hoarse; fortunately, someone else did, and she closed with it. Sorry for a longish post, but we don't get to see Lucy in Fla. too often - -- the last time was for CCC last February in Tampa, the magical show which Lucy told me was, well, "the highlight of her life," because Richard Thompson joined them and Buddy Mondlock that night, in a well-attended show put together by super sponsor/advocate WMNF. Anyhow, I'm a substitute teacher finishing up my education in Clearwater, and have two cats and an Airedale. And one question, she told the anecdote she's probably told before, that she learned that in Ireland, the tourists drink Jameson's whiskey, but the locals all drink ???what??? Lucy said that we probably didn't care. But I do! I little good Irish whiskey ought to help what ails me... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jan 2000 13:30:49 -0500 From: "Pat Grismore" Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy is coming, Lucy is coming Hi All, Just found out that Lucy is coming to the Greater Cincinnati area on Wed., March 22nd.
