A sold show (286 people) at the Emelin Theater in Mamroneck, NY with Lucy. Regards to Sharon, Jessica, Katrine, and Eric. The Lonesome Brothers opened the show, and played 30 minute set. The Lonesome Brothers are Jim "Down By The Water" Armenti and R. Mason (didn't catch his name). I immediately thought of Fred Eaglesmith, although LB were not that funny. After a 5 minute intermission, Lucy strolled out. In addition to her usual black vest, she wore the most unusual jeans that I've seen. On the front side, they were striped like a bar graph running horizontally. Each stripe was a different color. Gold, silver, pink, green. Lucy later indicated that she was showing her "hippie" phase. The summer dress she wore at her 07.13.99 Fez Cafe, NYC show was the most unusual attire I've seen her wear. Lucy played with Jon Herrington (guitar). Jon is going to be joining Steely Dan in the Spring for their new tour. Here's the setlists: Set 1: Angels Rejoiced In Heaven Last Night End Of The Day Five In The Morning I Know What Kind Of Love This Is Ten Year Night No More Excuses Crazy Dreams (Paul Brady) The Swimming Song (Loudon Wainwright) If You Could See This Is Mine After a 15 minute intermission, Lucy came back with: Set 2: Mary & The Soldier One Good Reason Turn The Lights Back On Somewhere Out There Broken Things (Julie Miller) That's Mathematics/Pi Song By Way Of Sorrow (w/ Richard Shindell) Love Hurts (w/ Richard Shindell) Love Is The Ride Promise Me The Return Of The Grievous Angel (w/ Richard Shindell) Scorpion (w/ Richard Shindell) E: For One In Your Life E: The Ballad Of Mary Magdalene (w/ Richard Shindell) What a blast. I'm looking forward to the Outpost show. Lucy was full of energy and obviously having about as much fun as an artist is allowed to legally have while on stage. She looked and sounded fabulous and had Jon Herrington accompanying her on guitar. The two of them connect very well. At one point, Jon played this intense break (one of many) while Lucy watched him with this priceless blissful expression. When he had almost finished Lucy said something to him that approximated "don't stop, keep going." I'm not good enough at lip reading to give an exact quote. I asked Jon about it after the show and he told me that that was exactly what had happened. He added that it was great because he was so "into it" that he "needed" to play some more. Like I said, intense.... Mary Magdalen....Lucy doesn't sing Mary Magdalen, she becomes Mary M. If you haven't heard her do this song, you have missed something. Eyes of My Beholder (from The Tide) sung accapella was off the charts. Lucy had broken a string and while Jon changed it for her, all you could hear was Lucy's crystalline voice undisturbed by any other sound....positively awesome. This song alone was worth the price of admission. (Maybe instead of bringing her baked goods we should bring crummy strings so that when they break we could hear her sing accapella.) Another highlight was If You Could See, with Lucy playing at the piano. I have seen her accompany herself on the piano a number of times and just love it. When she sits down and looks at the keys she gets this really excited look in her eyes, which, for lack of a better description, is the kind of look someone gets when they see an old friend. As I watch and listen, I am always struck by how natural and accomplished a musician Lucy is. It would be great if she could do something with the piano on her next album. Lucy played for over two hours (there was no opener) and she was amazing.
