I also saw that this night was a supply and demand issue. the club was oversold, overbooked and there were 5 people standing who may have paid the cover charge for my seat. i welcome the change in the policy based on the contracts of the artists and i would have been more selective in the shows that I attended there if the covercharge remained in effects just based the cost of the shows. The issue for me was that i was no aware upfront that there was a 10 dollar minimum. I would rather report on the sold out show at the Emelin last night. Lucy was opened by the Lonesome Brothers of NOHO and then joined by Richard Shindell. The set was similiar to the Makor show and Paul R said he would post the set list. Lucy and Richard returned to their Love Hurts roots and mary Mag again belonged to Lucy. Lucy played a long show filled with Julie Miller's Broken things , Paul Brady 's Crazy Dreams, The swimming Song, Somewhere out there, I know what kinda love this is, The PI song by the famous Irving Kaplansky, Lucy played Scorpion with Richard backing her up and they did By way of Sorrow as crycry JOn Herrington played incredible guitar parts and accompanied Lucy on If you can see on the wailing guitar - his guitar became lucy's duet partner- it was like something i hadnt seen in a while. Lucy was in great voice and spirit. The Emelin is small ampitheater that has incredible sound and really nice people. thanks to lucy and Rick for two great shows and then end to a great week of music, thats for all the grand moments and enjoy the baked goods..... see you both when you come back to town and travel safe... sharonG Richard Shindell sang 10 year night ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jan 2000 12:02:08 -0400 From: Benay Bubar Subject: [lucy-list] Patty Romanoff's Makor message Bravo, Patty! My second long-winded post will end up appearing after her message about boycotts, but believe it or not, I wrote it BEFORE I had seen that post...it just didn't get sent quite in time to make the same digest. Independently, I think we pretty much came to the same conclusion: Makor is making an effort to do better, so let's support them in that. Looking forward to the Nields concert and hoping it will be packed...and that other members of the Initially Disgruntled population will be in the crowd with me, having a great time. Yeah, i know lucy will come back and i'll have fun at the next show...I just really want to get to a show with my mates over there. Damn the ocean. There's and article on P&Dement in the list this month...Apparently iris opens and joins him for part of his set. Excellent. jenny* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Jan 2000 15:15:13 -0500 (EST) From: Benay Bubar Subject: [lucy-list] To: LUCY-LIST@smoe.org I am well aware that this is the lucy-list and not the makor-list, but after my previous post, I think it is only fair to say at this point that I WILL be going to the Nields concert at Makor on Tuesday after all, and I want to mention why. Although I don't know if it's been posted on this list yet (I saw it on the dar-list), the Nields' management didn't know about the drink minimums at Makor before my post, and it has now been arranged that there will be no drink minimums for the Nields show. I think it says a great deal for the Nields' management (and Lucy's management too, because apparently they hadn't known about the drink minimums either) that they pay attention to these lists enough to become aware of a post such as mine and address the problem promptly and effectively. I'm not totally springing to Makor's defense---I still am upset to the extent that I think that Makor has $10 of my money that they shouldn't have (mainly because I wasn't made aware of the drink minimum until after the concert...though I do object to drink minimums in general because they are unfair and pointless in that those who want to drink will do so with or without a minimum, and those who don't want to drink will simply resent the drink minimum). HOWEVER, I think it also says something for Makor that they changed their drink policy, at least for the Nields concert, without even fighting about it (even if it did take a complaint from someone more influential than I---the Nields' manager---to accomplish that). The dilemma posed in my mind by publicly complaining about Makor is that I really want places like Makor to continue to exist and to continue to encourage people like Lucy and the Nields to perform here in NYC. I was very unhappy with the drink minimum policy at Lucy's concert and the way I was treated with regards to it, but because they've changed the policy for the Nields concert, I will go back (and who knows, I may even drink...it' s not that I refuse EVER to have a drink there, but I do think it should be my choice whether I drink or not). I can completely understand Jessica's complaint about the "obstructed view" issue, too...and I hope that Makor will address this problem as well and sell such tickets as "standing room only" (if that's indeed what they are) and at a discount in the future...and if that does happen, I hope that Jessica and others who were negatively affected by THAT policy will also go back. In short, Makor is still very new. If their policies are bad, I think they should be made aware of that, and if they don't change those policies, I think those of us who are upset are justified in staying away. However, if they DO take steps to change what is problematic, I hope we will support them by continuing to go to events there, bring friends, etc. IF (and only if) it turns out that they can learn from their mistakes and do their best to give concertgoers a good experience, they should be rewarded with our loyalty, which I hope they will find is the most profitable thing of all.
