You beat me to it!! I was still miserably at work last night when I finally turned on the radio to hear the lovely Lucy singing to me as if she knew what a terrible day it had been. It was the first time I had smiled in about 10 hours. Seems she was ranked over some other pretty impressive artists like Ani and Bruce Springsteen and Allison K.....Congrats to Lucy and Rick!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 08:53:30 -0500 From: Jeff Bernstein Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Martha Trachtenberg "It's About Time" Wblr4@aol.com wrote: >I have been on a desperate search for the above and have gone to Borders in >person and to Amazon.com and both places have told me that the above artist >and cd cannot be found. I was at a show in Huntington on 12/18 that amounted to Martha's release party and bought it there. The CD's had arrived at her house that AM. Since I believe it is self-released I'm not sure what kind of distribution it will be receiving, but on the back of the CD it lists the following contact information: Martha Trachtenberg P.O. Box 224 Huntington, NY 11743 Email: marthapt@mindspring.com I'm sure Martha will be happy to sell you a copy. Wednesday evening at about 5:15, the station tracked "Ten Year Night" all the way through. Listeners had ranked the disc at No. 28 in its 50 best albums of the year. WXPN is a public radio station that plays folk, blues and alternative-progressive music -- lots of singer-songwriters -- and airs "The Gene Shay Show," on Sundays, one of the longest-lived folk programs in the country. It's also the home of "The World Cafe," so it is a real honor for Lucy to get into the top 50 there. With remote broadcast relays and a powerful signal, this station reaches into New Jersey, the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg in Central Pa., and Baltimore and the mid-Eastern Shore of Maryland. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to Lucy's swings through Maryland and Virginia in the next two months. She's coming back to Baldwin's Station in Sykesville, Md., in January, and finally going to play the Rams Head in Annapolis and return to the Barns of Wolftrap in February. I can't wait. But the most important thing to readers of this mag is the information about Lucy's guitar. According to this article, Lucy has been using the same instrument since the late '70s- a vintage 1928 Martin 00-18 equipped with a Fishman Blender system for amplification. Fracasso has at least two fine albums to his name, the more recent of which, "World in a drop of water" I reviewed last year in Musical Matters Review (you can hear Kelly Willis on backing vocals for one song). There may be a new one out now, I'm not sure. He has a great sound--folk rock in genre, but his songwriting is simple, direct and kind of catchy, not unlike Ron Sexsmith but without the monotonal drone or kitschy arrangements. If you like Lucy, Fracasso is worth a listen. As a mega Springsteen fan I thought I had better look out this guy and was really lucky to pick up the CD yesterday at a record Fair. I was immediately impressed by the overall sound and I have listened to it a couple of times today. I really rate this guy too. He even sounds vocally at times like Billy Joel. His songs are excellent and there is a good mixture to keep the balladeers happy along with the more obvious rockers. It is always difficult to be tagged the "new" anyone. Ask Bruce.!! I would not say that Bruce should be quaking in his boots but Jeff is certainly a talent and I would get a copy if you want to hear some great songs. Thanks a lot Rebecca and I hope he makes his way over to Scotland. Tell him he can even have a loan of my moothie (got that Greg). All the very best to all Lucy listers on all continents and I hope you have a great Millenium celebration (I've put new strings on the guitar for a singalong). Oh, and a very special Hi to Lucy. Have a great 2000 and ltes see who we can discover next year Ian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Dec 1999 14:19:24 EST From: SpecGlobal@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] WFUV's Best of 1999 List Hi all: As I type this message, I am currently listening to album #6 on WFUV's Best of 1999 List -- Ten Year Night! Quite cool. I will admit that it isn't a great surprise that it made the top ten --I sure had it as #1-- but I am just sitting here and smiling as it plays. What a great album this is....<>.... Anyone interested in getting together before the C3 show at Sanders this Sunday? Last year a group of us went to dinner at John Harvard's Brew House in Harvard Square. I know that there are some Dar/Richard/Lucy-list travelers coming a long way (sharonG; Katrin (from Germany); Pat Power (from Michigan); and probably Mike Epstein if he finds a ticket ;-) . Possibly many more that haven't mentioned it in their posts to the list. It might be cool to try to get something together again for the final C3Y2K, as Charlie Hunter so cleverly put it. Just throwing this idea out there for your consideration. I must admit that I loved Martha Hogan when she was performing around the Village and wish someone knew what happened to her. susan ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V1 #275 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
