Let me start by telling you a little about my favorite new discovery of 1999....Jeff Black. My favorite venue out here is in Hastings, about one-and-a-half hours from my home in Lincoln, Nebraska (smack in the middle of the country for those who aren't good with US geography :) ). Jeff was part of a spectacular season this fall (with Lucy scheduled for March), mostly of artists I was familiar with. A friend leant me his cd, called "Birmingham Road" for a few days beforehand. I had been listening to a lot of lightly-produced cds around that time, so it took me a while to get past his more-produced sound (it's probably equivalent to TYN). When I listened more closely, I was hooked...and this is still before the gig!! At the gig, I was awed by the power of his voice, his humor, his intricate lyrics, and even that he didn't even flinch when trains passed and blew their horns from the tracks a block away. That gave him away as a midwesterner, even if he hadn't already told us. All the other artists made some comment about it; John Gorka even took it as a request and broke into "I heard a train calling". :) Jeff has been compared to Bruce Springsteen, Robbie Robertson, Townes Van Zandt, John Goodman, and John Mellencamp. His song "Noah's Ark" is absolutely gorgeous. The title track "Birmingham Road" has a groove that you can't help but move to. I *highly highly* recommend both seeing him live and buying the cd!! If you love Lucy (as I know you do), then I can't imagine you'd be disappointed. Favorite gigs of 1999 (no particular order): Dana Robinson - Hastings, NE Jeff Black - Hastings, NE John Gorka - Hastings, NE Tanya Savory - Hastings, NE Vance Gilbert/Janis Ian/Livingston Taylor!!/Tom Rush - Lincoln, NE Peter Ostroushko - Lincoln, NE Geno Delafose and the French Rockin' Boogie (cajun/zydeco) - Lincoln, NE (FalconRidge should make the list, but the only thing I remember about it right now was being unbearably hot the whole time.) Favorite new-to-me cd's of 1999: Jeff Black - Birmingham Road Tom Russell - The Man from God Knows Where David Mallett - Ambition Stacey Earle - Simple Gearle :) Happy Holidays everyone! What I wrote was that Brady said that he had not sung Mary and the Soldier on stage in 20 years. I heard this from someone who was there so I'm not entirely sure exactly what was said. Also, I think that I remember Lucy once telling a story that Brady had showed up at a gig of hers in Ireland two or three years ago. If I remember the story correctly, she was introducing Mary and the Soldier and mentioned how much she loved Paul Brady. There was this stirring in the crowd and she was told that he was there. I think that he said hello from the audience, but didn't sing anything with her. I'm pretty sure that they spoke afterwards and that he told her how much he enjoyed her version of his song. If you go to the about.com folk music website (http://folkmusic.about.com) and go into the archive of recent articles, you will find a two part series on holding house concerts. These articles were written by Hugh Blumenfeld who runs the folk site for about.com. In addition to running this site--which everyone should absolutely check out-- Hugh is the official poet of the state of Connecticut, and a great singer/songwriter in his own right. His album "The Strong in Spirit" (which I was first told about by the illustrious RonG) ,in addition to being a great album on its own, has Lucy doing some absolutely stunning harmonies on Leather and Lace and Let Me Fall in Love Before the Spring Comes. It is well worth the listen.... Harvey ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 19:45:17 -0000 From: "Iain Geddes" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] did I see "Belfast" on this list? My millenium bugs must be getting itchy feet. The gig on saturday night was absolutely brilliant - Lucy really was fantastic, she appeared much more at ease and comfortable than in June and she sang and played really, really well. There were a number of factors - 1. The Cobblestone itself is a bit smaller and more relaxed than Whelans (the Cobblestone is home to most of Mr Peter Mulvey's live Glencree album), 2. the audience was there this time for Lucy and was a lot warmer and receptive to her (methinks Lucy lost out a small bit back in June with Steve Earle who played the same night as her), 3. the appearance of one Mr Paul Brady (this itself being an added bonus, but it happened late in the night and Lucy was doing really fine up there on her lonesome) and 4. Lucy herself was in very fine form and gave it loads for the whole night ("More power to ya, Lucy" I hear you cry). I think that the audience knew a lot more than they let on - like, say CryCryCry or the songwriters featured on it - when Lucy asked about certain songwriters or songs the most she got back was a few grunts and an odd groan... but, to the astute, trained, intelligent, handsome observer (i.e. me - [..I could go on..]) who had an eye out for bits of reaction rather than at Lucy at moments like these, there were lots of heads nodding in appreciation as various songwriters names were mentioned. So, Lucy, if ya ever get to read this, don't be disappointed with lack of audience replies - keep going the way you are and we'll be calling you one of our own yet. That's a promise - you won't be able to get a song in edgeways with the amount of abuse that we'll be hurling at ya! (as a form of endearment, of course - Peter Knight will back me up on this, isn't that right Pete ya feckin teabag) Besides the C3 stuff, most of the material was drawn from TYN and Flesh and Bone. I could be wrong, but I think only My Name Joe and Guinivere came from The Tide (they were played as part of the encores). She treated us to all three songs of her trilogy, she said that she rarely plays all three in the one show, so that was special and the new song sounded really, really excellent and it went down very well with the audience despite being one of the first few songs of the set. I'm useless when it comes to covers and remembering the titles, so the regulars might be able to help me out here - I know the Swimming Song is Loudain Wainwright III, but she also covered a Nanci Griffith song (can't remember the title) and the opening song was a cover of a song by the L?????n Brothers - sorry for the lack of specifics, but the Till at the small bar went "Kerching!" just as Lucy was talking. I think that the cover that got the most and best reaction was Julie Miller's "Broken Things". As Lucy picked and then sang the opening line of "You can have my heart..." people hushed and sat forward to listen. It really was sung and delivered beautifully, the people there really appreciated it. For me, I really got a lot out of hearing "I Know What Kind of Love This Is" sung live. Even though Lucy and Dar do great harmony on C3 with that song, I don't think the record comes anywhere near catching the emotion contained until its heard live. I'll be listening to it differently from here on in. OK, now its time to spill the beans. So, we've all read that Mr Brady made a cameo appearance to play and sing with Lucy on Mary & the Soldier and his "I recorded this song 24 years ago.... she thinks I play this song every night of the week!...she's been back there correcting me on the words!" line. Well... it just so happened that my table at the Cobblestone was right slap-bang next to one Mr Paul Brady and his party, and one or two bits of the conversation managed to find its way leaking onto our table (don't get me wrong - I wasn't listening in, I was busy slagging off Conor (one of the lads from work) before the gig and during the interval). Anyway - Paul went backstage to Lucy at the start for a couple of minutes, came back and announced to the people he was with loudly ('cos he was halfway between the table and the bar) that they would be playing Mary and the Soldier. At the interval he went backstage again and on his return, a very impressed Mr Brady said "J***s, she's unbelievable" somebody on his table said "What ?" "She's f****n' amazing. The harmony vocals. I haven't played that song in 20 years and she has it f*****n' perfect. She came in spot-on with the harmony vocals. J***s...." (Just thought ye might be interested to know). What more can I say (ya've said enough I hear you yell). It was a great evening and hopefully she'll be back to us in the not too distant future. Fair play to ya, Lucy Kaplansky.
