Usually there is an atendence fee of (in my experience 10-20 US dollars) and the artist gets all the money. In the last few years I have seen Richard Shindell, Lucy, Kate Jacobs, Hugh Blumfield and many others. There is usually an intermission and the artist sells CDs and chats. The last Lucy show I saw was at the Blixts' in northern New Jersey. They had two seatings of 30 each. With a 20 dollar fee, Lucy got 1200 dollars plus CD sales. And a good potluck lunch out back. When you compare that with watching TV in a motel, it is a pretty good deal. An excellent scheme! john alvord On Tue, 21 Dec 1999, Dunfionn wrote: > Good question, Jenny! She is a STELLAR performer. I just saw her at a live broadcast of Prairie Home Companion at Town Hall in NYC. She brought the house down (which is good, because Garrison Keillor almost put us to sleep). Her high energy style of fiddle playing and spectacular band makes you want to get up and step dance, wait a minute, Natalie actually plays the fiddle AND step dances at the same time!!!! It's a wonder to see. Natalie is bringing in the New Year on a cruise to Antarctica with the Chieftans. Wish I could be there with the penguins to see them perform. If you haven't heard Natalie McMaster perform, get her CD, you'll be be more than pleased. If you get the chance to go to one, go! Thanks to a local house concert series I got to see many artists in a small and intimate setting and make lots of new friends. I realized reading all the 10 best concert posts that many of mine would have listed their house as the venue. When you go to one, just be sure to thank the hosts for opening their house to the artists and the fans. I'm certainly going to enjoy the two shows I'm going to. As for Rab Noakes at Eaglesham well it is a great venue. I've even played there myself. Rab did a short but excellent set. Yet another great talent who has never had the recognition deserved. Ian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Dec 1999 18:56:02 -0000 From: "David McKay" Subject: [lucy-list] House! Jenny asked: >> What's a house concert??? It's where the artist comes to your *house* and gives a *concert*! :-) Peter Mulvey gave what was apparently the first one in Ireland back in October when he played at my mate Pete's house. It's great fun for all concerned! Lucy would probably have made more from her Aberdeen gig if it *had* taken place in someone's house ... He raved about how absolutely terrific she was and said that Paul Brady - who did the arrangement for Mary and the Soldier (from Flesh and Bone) - sat in with Lucy to sing it. Brady said that he had not sung the song on stage in 20 years. Like Robin Batteau joining in on Guinevere at the Bottom Line, or Eric Anderson doing Thirsty Boots as a duet with Lucy at Fez, it is another instance where a great talent attends a gig and then gets up to perform their work with her. Sounds like high praise to me. He's much better at reviews. Rick did turn up and i talked to him and Lucy briefly as they arrived at the venue. Lucy was absolutley speechless when, during the mid-break she met up with Paul Brady. She raced around the other side of the room and calld 'Rick, COME HERE NOW!!!!. She played a song with Paul too and could'nt believe her luck at him being there. She talked a lot of CRY3 and recounted meeting EmmyLou in an airport with Richard and Dar. ..gerry, do your stuff! exams are over! best, pete ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V1 #267 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
