There were 2 support acts. Cathy Bonner who was very good. Then came on this "Irish Country" band who were, let's see how I should say this, not really approriate to the night. I admit that I can't stand this kind of music so I probably shouldn't comment! Old joke- what's the difference between a fiddle and a trampoline? You take you boots off to jump on a trampoline. Then came Lucy. Brilliant. Apart from a few prats who stood at the bar yakking all night, the audience were very much there to hear her. She encouraged those singing along with her, thrashed her poor guitar on some songs like "Turn the light back on" then gently picked out sweet chords out for songs like "Broken Things", which was for me the highlight. It's weird that this sort of talent is playing in a small smoky bar with about 100 people, but I'm glad it happened! I got a CD signed after which was nice. Cheers, Davy Lamb ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 11:52:49 -0000 From: "Dunfionn" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] re aberdeen Lets not get carried away here. You don't have to read every word of every message. I've always thought all this talk about pies is half-baked anyway (sorry, ...sorry!). Lets face it, Lucy has to earn a crust (sorry again), but I find that it is more than a small crumb (oops) of comfort that her music is so good. Judging from all the comments, Lucy has really been cooking at all her UK gigs. So lets be thankful for the music, you can't always have your cake and eat it! I'm prepared to eat humble pie anyaway! Life is a pressure cooker and music like Lucy's is a great way to chill out. May be we can put talk of pies into cold storage?! To get back to the music, Lucy said in Glasgow that she thought the CRY 3 CD was difficult to get in the UK. I was in Borders in Buchanan St Glasgow and was glad to see there were a few Cry 3 CDs in the racks. Unlike Lucy's mother, I resisted the temptation to move her card to the ront of the rack, but I'm delighted to say all her CDs were sold out anyway. WOahhh!!! OK, i was actually jsut about to announce that i would have been glad to be in the lemontree because it was sooo small. It's great that lucy's getting more and more attention nowadays, but it'd be really nice to see her in a much smaller place even than the tron. did you say you got five encores or was that the belfast folks??? wow...that's great. So that was what i was going to say about aberdeen. As for the other stuff i feel kind of responsible beacause i....over-post....a little....and this may get long and i'm actually debating abotu whether to send it.... I can understand how you feel about baked goods...i know a lot of uk listers feel the same way...it's all cheesey americanised stuff, but presonally i find it really refreshing. it's nice to go to a show somewhere andit's so informal that you can walk up to the 'artist' and say, 'here, have some brownies'. or maybe we should scottishise it and buy her whiskies instead. or maybe not. WHile i'm actually at the show i have to take the music very seriously...sometimes i feel so affected by it that it';s hard to take, for instance, listening to lucy do 'for once in your life' absoloutely tears my guts out and i'm not ashamed to say that it left me with tears at the show on sunday night. i think the danger with these discussion lists is loosing the balance between being able to share these moments and have a good laugh at the same time. i can see how you might think nobody is focusing on the music...when i joined the list somebody was talkign abotu how cool their new purple couch was. i found that very strange and it irritated me for a while too...it seems i jsut forgot about it and now maybe i've become a part of that? i don't know.... I think that this is a lot freer (sp????) than some of the others...there are times when i've htought of posting something to a list and chickened out because of teh reaction it might get, but i feel that here it's ok to do that. i'm not saying that that makes it okay to post willy nilly (man, i'm turning into my mother) about anything and eveyrthing, but i do feel that it's easier to talk about things on this list than on others adn i find it really important to have that sense of....i don't know, is 'community' the right word?? I think this is a personal thing, i myself need to talk more on the list about the informal sides of the shows, of the music, of being in thi stype of music because i don't get to share that a lot outside of the list. Probably because of my age, i don't crash into a whole lot of people who understand exactly where i'm coming from in terms of the music i wanna talk about. I think that part of this comes from the fact that lucy herself is a very informal person and everyhtig is very laid-back at shows. Believe it or not, i do take lucy seriously... and for me, sunday night definetly did have it's serious side. ... I have been on some lists where talking abotu stuff like this has led to people leaving in the huff, hurt feelings and just general 'nastiness' appearing in my inbox everyday. and i've stopped posting to those lists. i hope this one isn't going to go the same way.... jenny* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 11:17:42 EST From: Scharri@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Re: lucy-list-digest V1 #262 In a message dated 12/17/1999 3:17:07 AM Eastern Standard Time, owner-lucy-list-digest@smoe.org writes: > We Scots must stick together and let "those who have no > history" (you know who you are) carry on in their own little ways. It must be the mother in me....spell it any way you want to! Now that I've bursted.....I'll only say nice things in 2000 unless of course, I burst again! "Little ways"?????? Oh Ian.....Unbunch yer knickers! Do not be so hasty and so lofty! It starts wars! It may come up and bite you on the bottom parts! You have to be careful who you blindly slam. Could be a Scot my dear! We first generation Americans "with no history", had to come from someplace You did your personal boast comment so I gotta do it cause it was thrown out there...... Whats yer history sweetie??? I've been a Lucy fan since about 1991! Seen her at least 35+ times. And your Lucy history is???? AND, been an Internet user since 1974! My user number was less than 400. And, you? Whats yer history hon? (Am I rude American enough yet?) Have you gotten the point yet? We can ALL be nasty, rude, ugly, boastful, etc. But, this is NOT the place to air your smug attitude towards others or their baked goods! We are supposed to be on common ground here....We all Love Lucy and good music, lets celebrate that. There are many of us that have NEVER mentioned baked goods. So, please, lighten up. It adds something. A few giggles here, a smile there. I think its light creative fun and should be taken that way. I know Lucy sure has gotten a smile or two out of it! And isn't that the reason we are here? For entertainment?? If it bothers you, if you are adverse to that...just log off. A basic childhood rule....If ya can't say something nice.....don't :) :) :) :) If you want verbal kid stuff volleyball, please do it privately. If you feel the need, say what you want about me and leave the baking kitchen goddess alone. She's a "treat" to hear from! Our own goodwill ambassador! I can catch Juliet again. Hot Press (very popular music paper/magazine on this side of the Atlantic) published what I reckon is a 3 x 3 inch colour pic of Lucy on their upcoming events page this fortnight with the caption "We Love Lucy : The Devine Ms Kaplansky..." running under it. There were no other pics of prominence on the page, so hopefully the publicity will pay off. So, this time I promise I'll take a few notes of the set list - last time she played here in June I couldn't get to my email until a few weeks after the show, so I could remember half of the details... ...though I did try to make amends by typing out the review from the Irish Times (not bad going getting a mention in the Times - they publish a handful of reviews and it is one of our biggest broadsheet national newspapers...) Sharon ! - I'm getting all my bits together! I've a small back-pack at this stage. I think I'll hit The Bretzel tomorrow afternoon - its a small kosher bakery in Portobello, home of *the* best apple danish pastries in Dublin - I defy Peter Knight to find nicer! I'm gonna ask her what other Steve Earle songs she has... see if I can get something different this time... I'll bribe her with Guinness and sticky apple pastries. I have plenty to choose from, but here's my top ten, in reverse order ... Suzanne Vega, City Hall, Salisbury Whilst Suzanne's musical performance this time around was as sublime as always, and her audience empathy is legendary, she gets points deducted for her rather precious poetry and writing recitations, and having the abysmal Mark Nevin as an opener is an almost impossible thing from which to recover! Laurie Geltman, Passim, Boston MA I'm not Laurie's greatest fan, but the mechanics of this particular gig, which was being recorded for a potential live CD, were fascinating! Her performance was heightened by nervousness, and the whole room crackled with energy. Tony Furtado, Aggie Theatre, Fort Collins CO I'd heard about Tony from a friend in Salt Lake City, and happened by complete accident on this little gig. Braved a blizzard-hit downtown Fort Collins to take in the show. Tony's virtuoso banjo playing and all round rocked-up bluegrass made this a foot-stomping night! Deacon Blue, Guildhall, Portsmouth A lifetime ambition satisfied by getting to this reunion tour date! They're not only still the best rockers in the world ... they're Scottish! Lucy Kaplansky, 12 Bar Club, London My first Lucy gig ... and what an introduction! A miniscule theatre, packed quite literally to the rafters, sweaty and oppressive and claustrophobic and utterly, utterly, enlightening! Two broken strings, songs by her dad, completely charming and self-effacing! Mary Chapin Carpenter & Catie Curtis, Hammersmith Lyric, London Two top-notch entertainers on the one bill! Catie is going to be enormous soon, and I can't wait to see her play an extended set over here. Mary was, well, just Mary ... alternately funny, satritical, heartbreaking. And that Diva song is just dripping with vitriol! Peter Mulvey & Beth Amsel, Bellows Falls VT As a cool little wind down after the excesses of Falcon Ridge, nothing could have beaten this! Beth is a sublime and ethereal performer, and Peter is as personable, enjoyable, and downright hilarious on stage and off! And we got a free Coke from Charlie Hunter! Lucy Kaplansky, Borderline, London As if a front row seat at the 12 Bar wasn't enough, here we got to stand even closer! It never ceases to amaze me how unassuming and modest Lucy is. And she sang my request! Cry Cry Cry, Falcon Ridge, Hillsdale NY How could this *not* be in my list?! This was the performance for which I flew across to the US. They did not disappoint. Magical songs, breathtaking harmony, all in the company of fantastic friends! Peter Mulvey, Swords, Ireland What can you say about a concert where you've helped with the preparations, met the guy at the airport, carried his guitar case, and bought him dinner? Peter put on the most amazing, energized, intimate night to an audience of 20, all the more so for carrying a heavy cold. It doesn't get any better than this. I'm terribly sorry to have upset you Sue (and anyone else). My comments were very much tongue in cheek and were not meant to cause offence. I feel perhaps your response was a bit heavy under the circumstances but as you did not know that it was only supposed to be a lighthearted dig I can understand your vehemence. Please accept my apologies and lets put and end to it. I feel humbled to hear you have seen Lucy 35+ times. It must be very frustrating to have followed her all these years and she still has not been given the credit due. Sadly there are too many performers in the same boat. Amazing talent but not the recognition they deserve. I did manage to persuade my brother and two friends to go along to see Lucy in Glasgow and they all went away with Ten Year Night in their pockets so hopefully when she comes back over here she will have gained a larger following.
