I've just realised there were no T-shirts! (that I saw at least) :-( And Lucy did'nt bum a drink this time; is she doing it at her other UK gig's? Maybe she's just bracing herself for all the real Guiness she'll drink in Ireland :-) Thanks for sharing the pictures, Dave. They've really cheered me up this morning! Hey All....Ray here, I am still reeling from Lucy's amazing performance last night. I arrived = during the second song (End of the Day...my fave :-)) to a very full = house. A lot of people there had not heard of her but by the end of the = night plenty loved her. We got stories about her previous shows in = Ireland, meeting Paul Brady, an Emmylou Harris story and the one about = her mom (or ma, one of her words she learnt in Derry....in addition to = 'being grand' and 'going for a dander') and one about a NY bar where one = of the songs was written and how the bar she was playing in last night = was similar. She took a little break halfway through during which i went = up and got her to sign TenYear Night...She seemed really pleased that i = had heard of her, I also bought Flesh and Bone (on her recommendation) = and got her to sign that at the end of the night when i went up to thank = her for a wonderful night and for playing 'The Kid' for me. She was = sooooo nice, she shared her first sip of Irish Guiness this time around = with us, and I cannot wait to see her back. The crowd was great too. = Everything was just perfect...She played plenty of requests...The Kid = for me, Just You Tonight for my friend, My Name Joe for some loud woman = sitting in front of me (i was standing the whole night and it was too = warm but who cares)...and more i cannot remember. Well, from this moment = on i will always say 'Folk rules' and there is no turning back now! Thanx for listening, Pete and the Dub. gang u r in for a treat! RAY xxx PS - I think she got baked goods! not from me though, next time i will = be putting on an apron. PPS - Me and my friend were 2 of 3 people there who had heard of = CryCryCry...another story she told is how the band got the name and she = asked if anyone had heard of them...In her words 'Oh, 3 people. 3 is = good. 3 in better than none' PPPS - I think we got better value for money than the rest of the UK so = far...Lucy played for over a good solid 2 hrs followed by 5 encore = songs!! We would not let her go....she was very glad to see we enjoyed = her so much...Could someone tell me the name of the Angry Trilogy = songs...we heard them but i only know the name of 1! And we heard a = little story about THEM!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999 14:05:50 EST From: Scharri@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Year's Best Of course the three Lucy shows I've seen this year are the number one choice. But the best had to be the snowy night she played to 8 snow ignoring friends. The best rendition of On the road to Fairfax County I've ever heard. --Thursday's Bridgewater, P.S.This is the show where Lucy said the sound was perfect. She stopped in the middle of a song to say that and mentioned it about 5 times that night. Funny, after the recent discussion here. The sound guy was 22 and American and Richard/David/Lucy fan! (Sarcasm you say Bill?? Who me??? Why you've only met me once at a Lucy show! Are my American roots showing?) I sure wish I had a camera with me to scan in and post the picture of Lucy getting the massage from the guy in the Cat in the Hat hat. Cry Cry Cry - Rosebud, Pittsburgh, PA Richard to 10 fans - Thursday's, Bridgewater, PA David Massengill - Bridgewater to about 4 fans - Minneapolis, MN to about 200. Lowen & Navarro - long time favorites Pittsburgh and Baltimore, MD Stacey Earle - Both of her shows were great. The 2nd, her husband Mark was with her. The first, she got stuck in blizzard like conditions and had to be rescued by the local police. She's going to be here early Feb. two nights, (Rosebud and Thursdays). Christine Lavin - too funny! She is the one that originally promoted Richard in about 1991-2 Son Volt - Always a favorite. Opened for John Mellencamp not folky but a favorite. Pete and Maura Kennedy - I think they are going by The Kennedy's now. Always a great show. Pete Kennedy can play the guitar like no other performer. He has that jangly Byrds thing going. Roger McGuinn says he's the best he's ever heard. I agree! Leo Kottke - Steve Earle - Jayhawks - And Jules Shear! Always wonderful He writes so many songs for other people. There are so many good ones......I'm going to listen to some of the others that were suggested by others. Music is so wonderful! If anyone hears anything new and likes it, let us know! Happy Holidays to everyone! No amount of pies cakes chocolate brownies could ever detract from the quality of Lucy's songs and her interpretation of other material. When I spoke to Lucy about the artists she has covered ie Richard Thompson and Steve Earle we both agreed that you can not ignore good songs. Anyway, Jenny did apologise to me for getting caught up in all the baked goods hype. She said she was at an impressionable age so I let her off and told her not to do it again. We Scots must stick together and let "those who have no history" (you know who you are) carry on in their own little ways. Ian Ps I'm a Dons fan so obviously too mean to give anything away for free. Every time I sign on, there are terrific reviews from all of you who have seen her. I love reading all of your comments and thank you all for letting us know how the tour is going. I am not sure how to respond to the above, so hopefully I don't come across too strongly--if I do, I apologize beforehand. I read your review from Aberdeen. I thought it was great that you traveled a long distance to see Lucy perform. If I wasn't fortunate enough to live in an area in which there are often multiple Lucy shows that I can easily attend, I would also travel great distances to her gigs (and have). There is just no one better to see in person than Lucy--the voice, the songs, the personality--she's got it all. I was disappointed that the turnout at the Lemon Tree was less than a packed house. It happens. I agree with you--Lucy deserves better. In fact, I think most, if not all, participants on this list believe that she deserves a sold out hall everywhere she appears. She sells out more and more of her shows these days, and that is great. I think that this tour she's on is about expanding her audience as well as seeing her old friends. A lot of the gigs sound like they were either sold out or well attended. Unfortunately, the Aberdeen gig wasn't a sell out. Hopefully it will be next time. As far as baked goods are concerned, my dear friend sharon handles the logistics of the culinary arts. Sharon brought up the baked goods as an endearing thing--something to let Lucy know that she has people thinking about her. Others picked up on it. That's not a bad thing--and, it is about showing appreciation for the music and an artist who gives a lot of herself. I have never brought Lucy any baked goods and she still greets me with the warmth she greets all of her fans. I don't think that I have posted about them either. But if fans want to show their appreciation and support I don't see the harm in it. Stay with us, I think it really is all about the music....
