I have been lurking around here for = quite a while now and as tonight is the night i am gonna see Lucy is = person i figure i might as well say Hi. Is anyone else on the list going = to the Derry show (N.Ireland)? I doubt it. I hope all goes well for Lucy = tonight..the place she is playing is really small, and so there will not = be that great a crowd. I also have a very weak voice at the moment due = to a nasty cold that won't go away so i will not be singin' along :-( = And Sharon will probably hurt me for this but i will not be the bearer = of baked goods tonight...Im useless at baking! That and i really don't = have time to whip something up as i have studying to do for a chemistry = exam tomorrow (school sux!). Anyway, i just wanted to know if Lucy's CDs = will be on sale tonight? I sure do hope so...i need to get my hands on = the 1st 2! I think if she asks for requests i will be begging for 'End = of the Day'. What are my chances of getting ehr to play a Dar = song....like As Cool As I Am. And can u people help me out with questions to ask her if i do get into = a little chat? I just know i will get all tongue-tied!! Well,Try get back to me for tonight...and if anyone is going....Say = HI!...Um, I am about 5'11 with short dark hair and will be wearing a = black fleece! Lucy is such an unassuming personality, and it is that which is her charm. Her performance was obviously a little rushed, given the timing restriction on her set, but she made the most of it, and treated us to a special evening. Particular highlights were Speaking With The Angel (my request), and The Swimming Song ... her arrangement fascinates me. After the show, I talked with her briefly (she thought she recognized me, but from where?), and handed over the fruitcake which I had brought, plus a card from sharon which I believe tried to explain the whole baked goods situation. She seemed a little surprised that sharon was known all the way over here! After she moved upstairs to allow the rave to be setup, I managed to get a photo of her and Kay, and Kay got one of me and Lucy! I've uploaded some of the concert photos onto my website if anyone is interested. They're not the best pictures in the world ... I guess we need to wait for Susan Cane to get hers developed. Nice to see Paul & Buffy, Susan, Paul, Jon and Matthew at the gig. RIGHT, best gigs of 99....hmmm, you know, before november 26th last year i had only been to one concert ever (nanci griffith, 1994, my first ever show of anything) and now i've been to lots....I CAN MAKE A LIST!! Mine's going to be best concerts since november last year. just because 1) Lucy @ the Ramshorn - Man, that was a great show, except for the opening act. he sucked. I got to talk to lucy....she proclaimed me a truly cool person for bearing the good news about somewhere out there. It was my first ever folky/coffehouse type show. 2) Lucy@ the Tron - Y'all know why that was great already!! 3) John Prine @ the royal concert hall - I went to see john on a whim...(and because a million internet buds told me i *had* to) , never heard him sing, only the songs nanci has done. had balcony cheap seats. Took a friend who was very dubious abotu my taste in music. We laughed our little a"£$! off...get to go again in january!! 4)James Taylor@ the cambridge folk festival - Man...that guy is the greatest (i grew up on him...am growing up on him), he ended the best weekend as the sun set in the south east english sky and the stars came out and *everybody* was singing... 5)Stacey Earle@ the cambridge folk festical - Before i saw stacey's first set at cambridge i hated her. SHe sqwaked and stuff...but then i went along. It was a broiling hot day, and for the first time the weekend it had rained. Then the sun came out again and as i watched sttacey from the side of the club tent the steam was rising...and she rocked. her son sat in on drums and he was very nice looking. 6) Jewel @ the city halls, glasgow - I went to this with 8 of my friends...we had a rockin time. Even if she has sold out to the media. Jewel let us all come down the front at the end and rock with her and the band. I love steve poltz, guitarist and suport act. 7)Steve Earle @ the armadillo, glasgow - I have to say, i didn;t like the bluegrass guys, but steve's acoustic set was amazing....he's another of my long-time heroes 8) Nanci griffith and friends @ the armadillo, glasgow -The second time i got to see my long-timer heroe and my second ever concert. It folked. 9) Mary Chapin Carpenter @ the armadillo, glasgow -WOwza, this was the loudest, funkiest show of the year for me (except r.e.m maybe) and me and my mommy sang all the way through it 10) Catie Curtis @ the armadillo, supporting MCC - have to list her as separate because ihave to say i would have gone home happy if chapin had dropped dead on the stage after catie's excellent opening. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Dec 1999 20:02:54 EST From: FISH1994@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] best gigs............. A handful really stand out from the rest: May 1st (May Day) a double bill in Indianapolis of Lucy Kaplansky AND Jennifer Kimball. They each had their own set, and each sang backup for the other. Wow! May 14th - another incredible double bill, this one in Columbus, Ohio: Eric Andersen and Lynn Miles. May 30th - Kate Campbell @ Center for Southern Folklore in Memphis, Tennessee. This was the moonpie-list gathering of folks from California to Saudi Arabia, and Kate came through for us playing for a solid 3hrs.10min. June 25th - Kelly Willis in Berwyn, Illinois. Kelly's "What I Deserve" is a very close runner up to "Ten Year Night" (IMO) as 'Album of the Year'. July 9th - Gillian Welch and David Rawlings in Columbus, Ohio. Again, wow! This show even had pyrothechnics from On High (knocking the power out briefly, but G&D didn't miss a note). Gillian even closed the show with my request ("Red Clay Halo"). MANY other great ones: Susan Werner, Susan McKeown, Cliff Eberhardt, The Nields, Tracy Nelson, Barbara Kessler, Greg Greenway, Vance Gilbert, Denice Franke, Jim Lauderdale, Continental Drifters, Carrie Newcomer, James Keelaghan, Kevin Gordon, Leftover Salmon, Maura O'Connell, and on&on&on. I've had a damn fine year!
