It was great to meet Iain & yourself at the Tron. It was a really nice evening. I am from a generation which of course knows who Carl Gottleib who wrote the screenplay to 'Jaws'. I wish I knew, I would have love to have talked to him. I got tickets for Celtic Connections for the following: Beth Neilson Chapman @ the Old Fruitmarket. Prine & Dement, although my wife Joy won't go to that because she does not like Iris's unusual voice!. A concert at the end of the programme with four guys I have never heard of, and Tom Paxton. Paxton must be in his late fifties/early sixties by now, but he puts on a great show, his social and political songs are hilarious, and he has written many great songs. I just hope he gets top billing, he deserves it. Martha opened for Lucy at the George Street Playhouse Summer Folk Music Series during the summer of 1998. She was/is amazing. Her new CD, "It's About Time" is due out any day now - guest artists include Grammy award winner Marty Stuart, Tony Trishka, DeeDee Weiland, and others. I have heard it at least a dozen times and marvel at the lyrics and music - absolutely amazing.>> Coming out of lurkdom to say that if you love Lucy, you WILL ABSOLUTELY ADORE Martha Trachtenberg, one of the freshest and beguiling new talents on the music scene today. We're lucky to have her on Long Island, but I have feeling that after her aptly titled CD, "It's About Time" hits the stores this weekend, we will be sharing her with many more singer/songwriter lovers around the country. The Old Fruitmarket is a great venue here in Glasgow. It really is just that, pretty big with a balcony still displaying old posters and adverts along the railings. I should think it takes around 500, with the majority sitting at tables, with chairs dotted around all over the place. We have seen some great concerts, (Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, Loudin Wainwright III) but the most unusual was at midnight one Saturday when, along with about twenty other souls, we watched Mick Jagger's brother (I think his name is Chris) play with his band. You can really see the family resemblance and it made you think when here is a guy obviously enjoying his music (he was good too) in front of a few people, when, if his brother was around, the place would be packed to the rafters. regards Walter - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg Steele" To: Sent: 14 December 1999 13:16 Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Beth Nielsen Chapman > Dunfionn wrote: > > > > Beth Neilson Chapman @ the Old Fruitmarket. > > Just saw Beth a week or so ago in Charlotte, NC. She began with Ten Year Night then Nick Lowe's What So Funny 'Bout Peace Love And Understanding, For Once In Your Life and then One Good Reason. It was good to hear her sounding so enthusiastic about her musical career so hopefully she will lay the Doctor to rest. She said she had never had any second thoughts about going back to psychology -thankfully. She said she found it difficult to write songs and seemed to spend ages over them and has lots of bits of songs which she takes and merges with songs which she may be having a problem with. Loudon Wainwright is the featured guest next week so that should be fun. Lucy said she was going to spend Christmas in Ireland with Rick and hoped to take in a few Guinness (no doubt with Paul Brady). I quickly went through my SE CD's but to no avail and then I found another 4 tucked away (I've been decorating). I hate it when these things happen. Soory I did not tape Lucy on Radio Scotland as I was busy on the PC which is nowhere near my tape machine. But for anyone who missed it (Iain) it was brilliant. Just wanted to say , lucy at The Lemon Tree, was fantastic,it was always going to be brilliant, the fact i met her, got her 3cds signed and got a dedication only added to a most wonderful evening. But, what i wanted to ad was that it was embarrasing, to see the very poor attendance that Lucy got from the north east of scotland.I travelled 100 miles to get there, arrived at the door at 7.50,and know one was there..At 8pm, ther were 4 of us,doors were opened for us at 8.05.The support act who was brilliant(her name escapes me at the moment)must have played in front of no more than twenty people. Lucy came on at 9 pm,there could have been no more than 60 in attendance. I feel that lucy deserved a lot better, for the truly wonderful, artiste that she is. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 21:04:26 -0500 (EST) From: Paul Rafanello Subject: [lucy-list] Best Gigs of '99 (Long) Pursuant to Sharon G's request on the Dar list, I hereby submit my list of best gigs of 1999 that I attended Lynn Miles - 01.02.99 Blixt Cabin, Wayne, NJ. My first exposure to Lynn. She was nothing short of mesmerizing, and having the show in a small living room made it a treat. Cry, Cry, Cry - 01.17.99 Town Hall, NYC. Met Ron G for the first time. Excellent sound in the Hall, and the group sounded well rehearsed. "Wilder Than Her" rocked the crowd. "February" made us sad again. Will we miss them? Only time will tell. Grey Eye Glances - 02.12.99 Towne Crier Cafe, Pawling, NY. Highly underated band. Fans of All About Eve and Susan Werner will find the same warmth in Jennifer Nobles voice. www.greyeyeglances.com for more info. Lucy Kaplansky - 02.17.99 Turning Point Cafe, Piermont, NY. This was the show where Lucy shined. I heard her sing "The Ballad Of Mary Magdelene" for this first time, and I had tears in my eyes. She also covered "Heart Needs A Home". Jennifer Kimball - 03.13.99 Fez Cafe, NYC. She performed with a full band (Marc Shulman, Zev Katz, Ben Wittman) that added a full sound to her music. The only gig that was better was her 09.09.98 show at the Fez when she had Lucy on backing vocals. I was on a highway with no exits. Karen Savoca/Pete Heitzman - 06.08.99 Fez Cafe, NYC. I've seen Karen before, and her shows were pretty sedate affairs. Not the case at this Fez gig. The audience was engaging, and a few women danced to left side of the stage. Pete played fluid guitar lines that I still don't understand how he gets so many sounds out of his guitars. Kelly Willis - 07.16.99 Bodles Opera House, Chester, NY. The opera house floor was jumping. Kelly was suave and enticing. "Heaven's a Just A Sin" away made me feel old. Caught the Sessions taping a few days later. Susan Werner - 10.24.99 Turning Point Cafe, Piermont, NY. I hadn't seen Susan in about a year. What a difference a year makes! I am still singing "Like Bonsai". "Don't Hang The Moon On Me" was a beautiful jazzy piano piece that made me appreciate a new side Susan that I hadn't seen before. Bar Scott - 11.20.99 Catskill Mountain Coffee House, Kingston, NY. Bar's has a new album coming out in February. "Fear From Paradise", and "Write Me A Love Letter" made me shiver. Cliff Eberhardt - 12.05.99 Mansion, Middletown, NY. Just over a car accident, Cliff was in fine self-deprecating humor form. I hadn't heard "Right Now" in a long time. He brought up Judy Dunleavy to help him sing "Worlds Apart". Blistering anger in "My Fathers' Shoes". The Gene Autrey guitar sounded as good as Pete Granata's guitars (just kidding Pete!) Tom Waits, 9/27/99 Beacon Theater, NYC An absolutely incredible, 3 hour music/sideshow juggernaut. i thank the heavens above for the chance to hear and see this american icon in the vocal chords and flesh. 2. Greg Brown, 4/12/99 Paul Smiths, NY Patti Larkin refers to him as the american poet laureate of our time, and i have to agree. this show, in a library with a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling window overlooking a lake deep in the adirondacks, was edged out only by mr. waits' bi-decadial appearance here on the east coast. "intimate" doesn't even come close when trying to describe the atmosphere. he took the stage, took a worn book out of his backpack, and said, "let's see what we got in the ol' notebook here..." and proceeded to perform a song he had just written while parked alongside the road about a mile out of town. 3. richard shindell, 11/28/99 Turning Point, Piermont, NY early or late show, take your pick. both were artful & inspired. 4. lucy kaplansky, 2/17/99 Turning Point gotta go with paul on this one. 5. Cry Cry Cy 1/?/99 Emelin Theatre, Mamaroneck, NY first time i saw them play live. damn.... 6. Richard Thompson, 11/27/99 Tarrytown, NY probably the british poet laureate. and a guitarist extrordinaire... 7. Del McCroury w/Peter Rowan, sometime in February, somewhere in New Jersey The modern bluegrass version of heaven. and an honorable mention to just about all that performed at Falcon Ridge in July. looking back, 1999 was a great year for music. there is a resurgence in folk/"singer-songwriter" music that on the one hand is very gratifying, yet on the other hand is probably a reaction to the over-excesses of our time. not that anyone on this list should feel slighted - it's clear that we've either been here for the long haul and will continue to be, or that the newer members have become so enraptured by the music that they'll be the long-haulers that will carry the torch after us faithful ne'er-do-wells pass on (or worse, lose our internet access.) it's also been a year in which this list has really grown - i don't know the numbers, but it's refreshing to see. lucy is a pearl. i live in the nyc area and have the chance to see her often. for this, i am grateful. - - eric ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Dec 1999 22:52:29 -0500 From: Paul Rafanello Subject: Re: [lucy-list] One more Best Gig of '99 How could I forget one more show. Sharon, Ron, Michelle, ifong, feel free to add your own comments about this show: Richard Shindell - 09.22.99 Fez Cafe, NYC aka "Soy Bomb" show. Lucy backed Richard on many tunes. We got to hear many of Richard's new tunes which are making me a convert to his music. The evening was marred by an inebriated woman who rushed the stage during "Are You Happy Now". The Fez staff kept feeding her more wine, so I hold them responsible as well. Ok, no more lists.
