I was one of the last to get to speak to her - the club made us all go upstairs 'cos they wanted to clean up (I guess). I finally got to speak to her and all I could say eyes wide was "I'm sorry Lucy, I'm just totally star struck"! But we won't get C3, sob! Still Richard and Dar both have new albums next year so there's hope that 2000 will see them over here. And if Lucy can play London twice this year surely she can do it at least once next year? Perhaps, if all three were here at the same time.... (Sorry, daydreaming again!) The venue was unusual, normally being a restaurant, adjacent to a small theatre. We thought it was great, being small enough to give an intimate atmosphere where Lucy could really connect with her audience, but large enough for the 100 or so fortunate Glaswegians (yup, that's what we're called!) to mostly sit down, and watch in comfort. Our crowd thought Lucy was in fine form. She's changed her set considerably since the last time I heard her in October. The Pi song and all the stuff about her dad has gone, and I have to confess at being able to get over my disappointment. There are some nice new songs being introduced into the set, damned if I can remember their names, maybe Jenny or Ian can do better. The 'swimming pool' one was cool, though. These are obviously being honed and crafted for album #4, and bode well for the future. Lucy played for over an hour and a half, with a great mix of tunes, and a well earned encore at the end. The concert was a sell-out, I think she could have filled a larger hall. This is remarkable when you consider that Lucy's tour in Britain has had virtually zero promotion, it has actually seemed a well kept secret. Here's a thing. How do you think Lucy can schlep across the Atlantic, travel around Britain, play to 100 people @ £10 a head, and make a living? I've never undressed it! One final thought. I always feel American sound engineers crank up the level of the instrument line so high that the performer has to force his or her vocals over the noise. I find this particularly irritating when there is percussion in the mix, I don't know how many Nanci Griffith concerts have been ruined for me, as the driving beat of the drums dominates everything. Uuugh! I felt in Glasgow Lucy's voice was better balanced to her guitar than when I have heard her in your fair land, because all the levels were lower and more subtle. Any comments?! Great to meet Jenny & Ian. Thanks for the tips about Celtic Connections in Glasgow Jenny, see you there? Merry Christmas and a great Millennium to all on the LucyList. I saw two really good concerts by Lucy last week, at Sheffield & Westhoughton in her UK tour. They were very different shows & it was interesting to see how she tailored her material & work to the different audiences. In the first she told her stories about her mom (mum - as she always says over here, she tries to fit in & work in new English words...more of this below...) buying up all her CD's in northern California. She also mentioned her dad giving a talk at the local university (at least this time she didn't get heckled over how middle-class this was, as happened when she was here in May - I think the person then involved was on the outside of a quantity of alcohol). Her other English words & sayings included "swish," "odds and sods" & "bloke" - - the last with a very good Yorkshire accent. Her singing was great & as usual she was full of praise for the songwriters whose material she chose to cover, especially Julie Miller's Broken Things. The second show was at Westhoughton - "the most well hidden folkclub in England," according to Tom Russell on his visit there earlier in the year - the previous time he played there he got lost & was nearly late! The thing about this place is that it is a *real* folk club; the audience like to sing along. On the second song she sang, Lucy was surprised that everyone was singing & in fact said so in the middle of the song then went on to finish it! It was the first time any audience had spontaneously joined in with her she said & for a couple more songs she seemed as if she couldn't believe it when the same thing happened. They are also a well behaved audience & they were suitably quite for songs such as "I Know What Kind of Love This Is," as well as other quite ones. She did change things to fit in with their abilities & seemed really pleased at the different sort of audience she had found. It's a place with a large, regular audience who include some very knowledgable people & also some who didn't know her work or Cry,Cry,Cry, for example. She also said that End of the Day was "born" in Southport, a town on the coast not far away. She was also able to borrow the resident band's electric piano to accompany herself on a song - a first in England! This time her English words included swish again and she said "I've also learned the phrase to give someone a good boll*%king!" (Letters replaced for those of a nervous disposition.) This brought the house down & Lucy clapped her hand to her face & said, "oh no, did I say something bad?!" She was eventually told it wasn't *too* bad..."This bad?" she said, making a space between thumb & firstfinger. "Oh, a bit worse -" she increased the space, "*this* bad." Another good night & I'm sure she won some converts. Dave. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 14:25:34 -0000 From: "Dunfionn" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Lucy K at the Tron, Glasgow 12th December. Silly typo in first message folks. If anyone gets the Long Island edition of the NY Times, one of the wonderful singer/songwriters highlighted in Ron's article is Martha Trachtenberg. Martha opened for Lucy at the George Street Playhouse Summer Folk Music Series during the summer of 1998. She was/is amazing. Her new CD, "It's About Time" is due out any day now - guest artists include Grammy award winner Marty Stuart, Tony Trishka, DeeDee Weiland, and others. I have heard it at least a dozen times and marvel at the lyrics and music - absolutely amazing. (No I am not Martha's publicist/agent/manager... just a dear friend and fan.) This Saturday night there is going to be a CD release concert and party at the Huntington Folk Society in Long Island. Martha will be performing with 3 others - arrive early, I hear these shows sell out quickly!!! "It's About Time"... everyone starts listening to Martha Trachtenberg. Walter has already given a brief rundown of the venue and the quality of the songs. Just to try in fill in some of the gaps Lucy sang the Louvin Brothers The Angels rejoiced in Heaven last night as an opener and also did a Steve Earle song which I know but cannot for the life of me recall the name. She said she was thinking of recording it on her next album. (When I remember it I'll let you know) She also did a Paul Brady song about a Soldier, Loudons Swimming Song. As part 3 of her trilogy of revenge songs Lucy did a new song called No more excuses. Julie Millers Broken Things, End of the Day, Ten Year Night, Turn the lights back on, Mary Magdelaine, One good Reason, Scorpion. No doubt I have missed some out. Nice to meet some of the Lucy-Listers. Had a nice chat with Jenny and her Dad and we all sat around chatting to Lucy and took some photos. She was so nice and friendly and said she really enjoyed her visits to Scotland. We talked for about an hour and had a surprise guest among us. A New Yorker who just so happened to stop by. This guy said he had started off in Greenwich Village doing sound and lights in coffee houses in the 60's and he knew the Byrds. This was none other than Carl Gottelieb who co-wrote the screenplay for Jaws, Jaws 2 and 3 and wrote The Jerk for Steve Martin. Excuse the pun but if you could have seen our jaws drop. This guy wrote one of the funniest films ever made. He told us some great stories which included a night when he was hanging out with Crosby Stills Nash and Young and Dylan. The were having a party when Crosby introduced a girl who he was raving about. This was none other than Joni Mitchell and she sang Clouds in Crosbys living room on piano. I had read about that moment in Crosbys biography. Anyway Lucy was mighty impressed especially as her hubby Rick was a film lecturer and here was the guy who wrote The Jerk. WOW. Jenny proclaimed him to be her adopted American grandfather. What a nerve. What a brilliant idea - he must be loaded. Wish I had thought about it first. Great night alright. See you at John Prine and Iris Dement on 20th Jan Jenny. Rockin show last night.....really, reallly rockin...Hi to Ian and all his crew, and walter, sorry i don't know your wife's name, but she was definetly cool in my book cause she was singing too. Ok, i'll try and make this short enough to send to you guys, but honestly, i could go on forever...I got there 'bout 7:30pm (started at 9pm) so that me and my dad could eat before the show...but we changed our minds eventually...There was nowhere to sit!! Only two tables were set up and they were both full. More chairs appeared gradually as the place got more and more crowded...but i ended up sitting on a stool right at the edn of teh bar that couldnta been more perfect. Anyway.,...i saw dr K before the show, she actually recognised me!!! My gaggagagagwwwddd.....!! She said, " You are, like, famous, you know, people keep telling me i should meet you...i tell them i alreayd have...." ARHRHGHHG!!! I handed over her brownies ( yes ian, i know, i sold out to cheapy american ideas...i should be ashamed, but i ask you, who's request did she play??) and a christimas card. even if she is jewish. oops. Anyway....she came on stage...she played bbeee-ooo-ti-fulllly. Amazing. starting off with the angels rejoiced in heaven tonight. SHe played all my favourites and i just had to sing along...I was really glad she did i know what kind of love this is....i really, really, really love that song. and she did it soooo good. but she played for once in your life which i always find dead difficult to hear. even though it was preceeded by the funny stories abotu her mum buying all the cds and puytting her card at the front in record stores. she also told us she'd learnt 'bollocking' (i don't believe in censorship) from you london dudes and you had tol dher that she couldn't say it down there, but she could up here. HUh. SHe said it was a shame, 'cuz i really dig that word'. SHe told us we were 'swish' too...ian's bro sorted her out when she said that... Afterwards lucy introduced me to other mailing listy folks and i discovered that me and my dad (he insisted on coming...i'm gonna try and put him off though...i really hope he hasn;t joined teh list or anything, btw...) and my friend have seats right next to a bunch of you guys for john prine and iris dement in january. weird. Walter, are you seeing iris and john at celtic connections?? If not, who are ya seein?? Anyway...Dr K played good stuff...and for the encore she asked what we wanted to hear...she played that MM and it was amainzg......even better than dar. it's the way she rocks back into the chorus....it's sooooo good. and then goodnight. my favouritest songs.....Cool. Then i got coffee and waited for the crowds to clear...I talked to loads of people. I love that you can do that in folky shows....you can just talk to people in the bathroom or at the bar abotu how much you love the music. It rules. WIsh i lived in old NY so i could do that alla time. when everyone else cleard off it was just me, lucy, and some of the listy guys left. we all sat and tlaked a bit. i felt a bit awkward....like such a dumb groupie...but never mind... I also managed to adopt carl gottlieb (apparently he wrote the screenplay to jaws...i'd neve rheard of him...but lucy's eyes popped out her head and loadsa people started swearing when he told us his name) as my L.A uncle...long, long story.....ANyway, eventually we all had to leave...And by the way, i'll just add at this point that i actually adopted carl way before he announced his fame in the discussion...purely on the grounds that he was very cool. so there, ian. I feel like i made a total fool outta myself.....mannn....i should have jsut gone home....I blame my dad. he brings out the worst in me. Lucy probably on't love me no more...This was predictable. Anyway, she said she wasn't coming back for a WHOLE YEAR....i early cried. and she said there was no way cry cry cry would be coming over, it would be way too expensive...But i asked her if she knew when dar would be over, she said next year was a maybe. ANway, i'll let you all get back to whatever you were doing now....in the ords of the good doctor herself, 'I am *so* starstruck'. And don't any of ou *dare* tell her i got so uncool and exciteable about all this... jenny* ------------------------------ Date: 13 Dec 99 21:35:51 +0000 From: "Matthew Bloomfield" Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy in London Hi Listers I didn't get time to write this over the weekend so most of it was jotted down on pen and paper on the train this morning: Needless to say I spent most of yesterday (Sunday) playing my Lucy CDs over and over trying to recapture some of the mood from Saturday night.... When I arrived at the Borderline at about 710, there were only a few people in front of me (I thought it started at 730 but that was door opening time). I thought I heard the two people immediately infront of me mention the lucy-list so with some hesitancy I butted in and introduced myself. They turned out to be Kay and Dave, two really nice people who you should say hi to at gig if you get the chance. I think larger forces must've been at work as Froggie (no sunday names here), had asked me to say hi to Kay if I ran into her. What kind of co-incidence is it that I end up queueing behind her because of my inability to read the ticket correctly? We chatted outside for a while before being allowed to enter the club, which was situated in the basement. It was probably the smallest venue I've been to (holds 275) bar some local gigs in pubs which don't really count. Arriving early paid dividends though as it allowed us to take up a position right in front of the stage where we were joined by an Australian fan who had taken the opportunity of UK a visit to see Lucy, although I gather she was staying in York! Mind you, what's a few hundred miles when you've travelled thousands. If there are any other Australians on the list, we were told that Lucy may go to Australia next year. After a bit more hanging on, the support act, The Arlenes came out. They were a three piece band consisting of an acoustic guitar/vocalist, lead guitar (both male) and a female backing singer (the singer's wife), I occasionally heard snippets of Shawn Mullins' voice in the singer, and thought the girl looked a bit like a young Nanci Griffith. We were informed that they also have a drummer and a double bass player who weren't present and that they are capable of rocking. Even lacking the extra percussion they were pretty good, but I forgot to pickup their CD. They were actually a stand in support act for Sid Whosothernameescapesme who was taken ill. Not long after the Arlenes finished, Lucy came out and introduced herself before launching into the first song. She played all my favourites, with two encores, must admit I'm not one for making set lists and just can't remember all the songs. The fact that the Borderline turns into a club after the main act prevented her performing longer but she crammed an awful lot into the hour and a half she played, with no break. The only slight dissapointment was with those who decided to talk during For Once in Your Life, I thought that was rude and inappropriate and if you're reading this here's a *slap*. Overall my first live Lucy date was a fantastic experience, her spoken intros to the songs, were often witty, and mostly insightful, she engaged the audience. I particularly like her "are you really clapping me?" smile she does during the clapping, she seems such a genuine and down to earth person. I must admit to being more than a little tongue tied when I met her afterwards, she signed my 3 CD covers (and nearly borrowed one to check the words to a song, but I was just beaten to it!), later she moved to the lobby and I got my picture taken with her. I also have some photos from the performance that I'll put on a webpage, probably next weekend (free phonecalls), but they need tidying up first. I hope I'll meet up with other listers and of course Kay and Dave at future gigs, Lucy and other wise. Saturday night was a privilage and a night I'll remember for a while to come.
