Re: [lucy-list] Glasgow UK Gig and T-Shirts [lucy-list] The House Concert Re: [lucy-list] Sonoma House Concert Report [lucy-list] DirecTV ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 16 Nov 1999 01:05:05 -0800 From: Tom Negrino Subject: [lucy-list] Sonoma House Concert Report Hi all, I was at the Sonoma house concert on Sunday night; herewith a report: Approximately 60 people braved rain, fog, and twisty roads to see Lucy and Nina Gerber at the home of Robin Pressman. The home itself is simply wonderful. The concert was held in the kitchen/great room; Lucy and Nina were at one end of the room, against the fireplace. Besides Lucy's usual equipment, Nina had a couple of amps, and there was a Kurtzweil keyboard. The sound system was generously loaned by one of the members of a local band (didn't catch the name). The sound was great, with the exception of an annoying buzz when Nina played her Stratocaster. After a terrific potluck dinner, Lucy came on and did mostly her standard set. She was in great voice. I was especially thrilled to hear her do Julie Miller's "Broken Things," which is my current CD-that-won't-leave-my player; in fact, I'd been listening to it on the way to the concert! There was a new song I didn't recognize that she said was part of the Trilogy (that would be the Pissed Off Trilogy; another song in that is "Turn the Light Back On." What's the third? Lucy's mom and dad were in attendance, and she brought her dad up to play the keyboard on the "That's Mathematics" song (to the tune of "That's Entertainment"), with Lucy reading from a crib sheet. They did the whole song, which she said that she'd never done before. They followed that with "On An Asteroid With You," another from the Weird Songs By Dad set. After hearing her, I now completely understand why Lucy never refers to Nina Gerber without adding the words "the great" or "the incredible" before Nina's name. She is. Her playing added so much to the show, but without taking the focus away from Lucy. Lucy managed to break two strings, which earned her the nickname of "The Thrasher" from Nina. One break came at the encore, and rather than take the time to change the string, Nina loaned Lucy her beloved acoustic, then cringed at Lucy's, shall we say, enthusiastic playing style. It was hilarious. For her encore, Lucy did two requests: "Guinevere" and "The Heart." She then left to thunderous applause. So thunderous, in fact, that we made her come back for one more song. Lucy asked for requests, and I said, "How about a Richard Shindell song?" "An excellent idea!" she replied, and gave us a terrific rendition of "The Ballad of Mary Magdalene." I'd heard here on the list that her version was superb, and you folks were sure right! I hung around after the show, and gave her a signed copy of my latest book, which lists her in the acknowledgments as one of the musical inspirations while I was writing it. She really seemed to like it. Her mom grabbed the book and then showed it to her dad; they were very complimentary and kind. I mention Lucy in computer books and magazines (gotta spread the word), and there's two examples on the stands now. One is the book, which is JavaScript for the World Wide Web, Visual Quickstart Guide, 3rd Edition, and the other is in the December issue of Macworld magazine; look for the screen shot accompanying the Eudora Pro review. It's a screen shot of messages from this list! All in all, it was a wonderful evening. I'm happy that I'll soon be moving to Northern California, because Lucy plays up there a lot more than she plays down here in Los Angeles! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Nov 1999 05:51:25 EST From: Wblr4@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Sonoma House Concert Report Dear Tom, What a great write up! It sounds so fun..60 people in the kitchen...was it Bill Gate's house? By the way, how did it happen that she performed at a home (assuming I am understanding correctly) and how did one get invited or find out about this special get together? Jenny got tickets 11 and 12, I got 15, 16 and 17 so I wonder who out there has 13 and 14? That is 5 listers or nearlisters so far, I wonder how many more we can get? The gig starts at 9:00pm which is pretty late and I assume that there is no warm up act. Does anyone know what the Tron is like since the tickets describe it as a restauant/bar rather than a theatre? Bill R tells us that "the t-shirts that Lucy's been selling at her gigs are now available online". Will these be available at the UK/Eire gigs or do we have to surf to get them? She did, among others, TYN and "On an Asteroid With You," the latter written by her dad who played piano for the whole show. A good performance, all around. I always liked the Asteroid song at Lucy's previous gigs. Sunday night Lucy played up in Geyserville at a house concert put on by some of the cool folks from KRCB radio in Sonoma County (where I intern). When I got there she was doing soundcheck and said Hi Katie to me!!! She had Nina Gerber play guitar with her, as with most of the NorCAL dates (I only saw two so I'm not positive). The show was so much better than the Santa Cruz show, if that's possible, plus, the person sitting next to me did not sing! Thank god for small miracles! Lucy did quite a few songs off TYN, plus a couple that she didn't do in Santa Cruz, like "5 in the Morning" (which I am currently really loving). She did a few covers, like "I Know What Kind of Love This Is" (i was not the only one cheering when she mentioned nerissa nields :) and "Broken Things". She broke 2 strings, one during the first set, which she changed really fast (I was totally impressed), and another during her encore. Nina let her play her guitar, which I think was Kate Wolf's guitar, but don't quote me on it. I don't think she's ever sounded better! Her dad came up and played piano on 2 songs, "That's Mathematics" and a song about looking cute in your little space suit. The crowd loved her so much that she got called back for an encore, then left and was almost up the stairs before she was cheered on to come back and do one more song! There was a lot of baked goods for desert and I heard through the grapevine that Lucy was raving about the one I brought (thanks to my mom!). After everyone left, Lucy hung out for a little bit before taking off, which was really cool. She's such a genuinely cool person (i thanked her for always remembering my name and she said, how could i not?!), and fantastic performer (but we already knew that, or why else would we be on this list), and I really hope she comes back to Northern California soon!! I'd have to say this weekend was worth spending 9 hours in the car, sleeping on two different couches, and lots of lewafs. Until the next concert, Katie Stohlmann http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~stohlman ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Nov 1999 21:25:43 EST From: SpecGlobal@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Sonoma House Concert Report In a message dated 11/16/1999 4:05:01 AM Eastern Standard Time, tom@negrino.com writes: << There was a new song I didn't recognize that she said was part of the Trilogy (that would be the Pissed Off Trilogy; another song in that is "Turn the Light Back On." One of them is labeled "progressive" and the other day I heard "Ten Year Night"! For those of you in the NYC area, this progressive channel is an awful lot like listening to WFUV.
