Sorry about the cross-post here...but has anyone got anything from the Shawn list lately...seems to have died? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Nov 1999 04:28:58 PST From: "sharon g" Subject: [lucy-list] the queens of folk in response to bill-i think ya gut me chewing on this one- if you are talking about which artist has done what for "folk" i think you have to acknowledge shawn colvin who was a singing partner of LK, who took a song like "sunny came home" to number one and won a grammy- it is not a pared down acoustic folk song.no way she folk identified but her roots are the NY folk scene it is a great song and in concert she does it acoustic.. the folk record of the year was Lucinda williams. car on a gravel a folk record, not really umm in the saem catagory as lyle lovett, steps in the house, another folk record, no way... the songs in the grammy folk catagory were so far from each other there was no way to compare them. the genre seems to be a catch all for alternative alternative music-on guitar who has done the most in the 90's for folk- call me partial Dar Williams she says the word FOLK all the time. no singer/songwriter disguise for her. she has probably sold close to the most records, (give Emmy Lou her due too-) exposed teh genre to a wider group of people through her endless touring, through her work and assistance by and with joan baez, and thru her lilith fair appearances.. she with crycrycry have had a great year and also have given the genre a substantial boost there is cheryl wheeler whose music has been widely covered bette midler, suzy boguss, garth, kathy mattea- i think lucy has benefits from her tireless promotion of 10 year night (ooohh- i havent typed that in a long time). she used the festival season well and her C3 exposure well but lucy kaplansky is not yet a household name-(SHhh dont tell harvey) the household name of folk- that gets the UH-HA from people is Joan Baez- who has be instrumental in assisting in the careers of many other artists..including dar and richard. she sang with C3 this year twice i believe and if you look at the "new Lucy pix" there she is with joan baez.. so you have it- joan baez teh undisputed queen of FOLK hey europe the lucy letter says she on her way 12/8-12/20 what clubs are still to be dtermined- keep asking and warm those ovens has anyone given her baked products yet? california i'm countin on ya sharon ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 15:29:26 EST From: Wblr4@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] the queens of folk Sharon, Great analysis of my question and but do you believe there will be a superstar of folk music or is that just something the genre won't allow? wbe p.s.
