I consider Joan Baez and Pete Seger two of the leaders of the original folk movement which opened the awareness of folk music for the talents of people like Richard and Lucy and many others. It's like the hall of famers acknowledging the arrival of the new generation of future stars...the passing of the baton. It must be exciting to be in their shoes..................I find folk music to be almost the next extension of alternative music...eventually a superstar will be born and folk music will even carry a larger segment of the listening public...............I know this idea is opposed to the concept of folk music but I think when some talented folk musician uses even more of the available instruments and techniques of those instruments you will have a sound that will captivate huge scores of listeners.....I've always thought Lucy should try that....I was reminded of this idea as Buffy described Joan's treatment of Richard's "Money for Floods". Real folkies, I think, would argue that that's the whole purpose of folk music is that just one or two instruments are used....the simplicity. But before the Beatles took rock music to another level....who would have thought? wbe ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Nov 1999 08:42:21 -0500 From: Steve Robertson Subject: [lucy-list] A Folk Music Superstar Wblr4@aol.com wrote: > ...eventually a superstar will be born and folk music will even carry a > larger segment of the listening public...............I know this idea is > opposed to the concept of folk music but I think when some talented folk > musician uses even more of the available instruments and techniques of those > instruments you will have a sound that will captivate huge scores of > listeners.....I've always thought Lucy should try that... First, an introduction. Lucy's music is constantly being recommended on the Nanci Griffith and Kate Campbell mailing lists, so I finally got around to buying a couple of her CDs. Haven't had a chance to see her live yet, but I'm keeping up with her touring schedule by lurking on this list. I agree with all the sentiments in the message above, but I think you might be re-inventing the wheel. There is already a folk music superstar named Bob Dylan, and his pervasive influence created the immensely popular category of folk-rock (The Byrds, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, etc.) Current singer/songwriters like Lucy, Nanci and Kate seem, to me, to be trying to de-commercialize the category and return to pre-Dylan styles. Hopefully, there's room for both the purely commercial and the less commercial approaches. Didn't she cover one of his songs already? i think i read that somewhere...was it called 'union hill' or something? jenny* ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Nov 1999 13:10:32 EST From: Wblr4@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] A Folk Music Superstar Steve, I was thinking in terms of a true "new" superstar...and to be honest, I think I was picturing it being a female...although Nanci Griffith does come close in some respects now that you mention it. I think I have every one of Nanci's cds. Enjoyed your comments very much. When you see Lucy, I think you will thoroughly enjoy her...Karen Savoca is kind of a sleeper, as well.
