It's been over two days with no news and I feel like I've missed an installment in the Green Mile. She played for something like 2 hours. I heard 19 songs from someone who was actually keeping track. :) She played Mary Magdalene, Scorpion, a bunch of stuff from "Ten Year Night" and since I'm relatively new to Lucy's music, some other kind soul who was there will have to fill you in on the rest. She was awesome. She did fall coming up to the stage for the second encore, but was luckily unhurt and the her guitar was ok too. Thank goodness. But that's all the news I can give you. :) Lisa ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 11:09:39 EDT From: SteadyOnDC@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Where in the world is Lucy K... ..rumor has it she's in Boston tonight (Harvard Square to be exact)... ;) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 12:01:10 -0400 From: Kerry Bernard Subject: [lucy-list] Richard - Rochester - CANCELLED LAST MINUTE NOTICE: If you were intending to catch Richard Shindell tomorrow night (Saturday, October 30) at 12 Corners in Rochester, unfortunately, the show has been cancelled. (back to basics) Not that I haven't enjoyed the nutritional and cultural dialogs, but here's some bona fide Lucy news... ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The set list from the Rosebud show in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, 26 October 1999: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Louvin Bros. Tune (title?) End of the Day One Good Reason ["Dancing Queen" riff] Five in the Morning The Kid (Buddy Mondlock) 10-Year Night "No More Excuses" (Angry, Scathing song #3) Swimming Song (Loudon Wainwright III) Broken Things (Julie Miller) For Once in Your Life Song about Pi (Irving Kaplansky) Scorpion By Way of Sorrow (Julie Miller) Turn the Lights Back On Somewhere Out There (Steve Earle) Still Life Return of the Grievous Angel (Gram Parsons) Encore: #1 (unplanned) Ballad of Mary Magdalene (Richard Shindell) #2 (planned) Goodnight (Cliff Eberhart) Lucy was in really good voice, and had a lot of energy (which seemed a little on the low side when I saw her at the Old Town School of Folk Music earlier this month. The audience at the Rosebud was really intent and quiet while she sang, which hasn't always been my experience at the 'Bud. They were also, however, very non-responsive to Lucy's banter in between songs, which I think might have been slightly distracting to Lucy as she'd become self-effacing when a funny interlude failed to get the response you'd expect (save from the four-top I was sitting at, and the one directly behind me which was comprise of some other GREAT lucy-listers, Tom and Sue). After "One Good Reason," Lucy asked if there was anything in particular folks wanted to hear... (she had no predetermined set list; at least not anything written out). After the usual calls for things like "Scorpion" and "By Way of Sorrow," someone called out "Dancing Queen." After a few attempts to work out the chords, Lucy proceeded to ask for the lyrics, and said she'd sing it. But no one could even come up with the chorus (which perhaps might be a point of pride). Not to [self-] stereotype or anything, but 50% of the table I was at here gay men, and even WE couldn't come up with it... oh well. A lost moment if there ever was one... Lucy, in her ever-gracious sense of style plugged releases by Buddy and Julie Miller (both her Hightone albums, which I also endorse!), Steve Earle (El Corazon, specifically) and early Gram Parsons material (esp. those with EmmyLou Harris). She also told some funny story about she and Richard Shindell running into Emmy in the SeaTac airport. And that she feels like she needs to sing particular songs in homage (or debt) for the influence Emmylou has provided her... A guitar string break during "By Way of Sorrow" prompted her to say she gets "carried away with that one." When she first appeared for the encore, she asked for requests again. I called for "Mary Magdalene." And she asked, "Who said that?" I replied, "Chicago." She'd been prompted by more than one person at the Old Town School show that someone would be coming out to the Pittsburgh show from Chicago... so she obliged and said she didn't often get to do this. She really nailed it (in my opinion she brings a lot more passion to it than the Cryx3 Dar-led version). Perhaps since she sang the original harmonies on Shindell's album, she feels a connection with it from then... Anyway, I thought it was one of the best gigs I'd seen her at (I've seen her 10 times, two of those w/ Cry3). My friend Karen (who got us on the guest list) says that I am approaching stalker status, which is defined as having seen an artist 50% or more times outside of your home state... (I'll "happen" to be in Oakland for a conference later next month when she has her Berkeley gig at the Freight and Salvage, and her dad is supposed to play piano.) So let's have more "real" Lucy news, and music-related content (not that the collegial other chat should cease, by any means!). If any west-coasters (NoCal) are planning to be at the F & S show, please let me know, and we can try and hook up. I've never been to the Bay Area during my first 41.5 years (I know, take away my gay card), so I am really looking forward to that... Have a great weekend y'all. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 12:14:07 -0500 From: Bill Karnoscak Subject: [lucy-list] One more thing... I forgot to report that the "bears" were very well-behaved at the Lucy show. No leashes necessary (that was hilarious!)... (back to basics) Hello everyone, I'm Sherie, and I just joined the list after Lucy's show at the Rosebud in Pittsburgh, which was wonderful! Just wanted to say... Thanks for the write-up about the Lucy show at Rosebud Bill! I too was there, and have never heard a voice or a Martin Guitar that I've enjoyed more. Great, great show! I could have done without the bartender who seemed unable to get the ice out of the ice bin without making it sound like he was making a conscious attempt to add some unwanted, and unneeded, percussion to the show : ) However, everything else was fab! I enjoyed Lucy's banter, but did notice that the crowd was rather non-responsive, but they all seemed to just LOVE HER!! Perhaps we were all just caught is a state of awe? At one point she told the audience a cute story about how her mother goes around to all the record stores and move the card with Lucy's name to the front of the CD's, and I have to admit that I while I was in Border today, I did the same thing : ) Ha! I'm planning to go to NYC in December, and would love to stop by some of the folk clubs in the Village. Any suggestions? As you'll see from the email below, she won't be there, but the dates they're looking for seem to be the 8th or the 11th (so hurrah, it isn't going to clash with Ani DiFranco). I noted from the list they did send however, that the very wonderful Kathryn Williams will be there on 27th Nov, well worth a look. Regards, Kay - ---------------------------------------------------- Kay, We just recently got a call from Lucy's UK agent asking about availability of the club on 8th or 11th December. Unfortunately we are booked up, so she won't be playing here, but maybe they will suceed in fixing up a London date for her somewhere else around those dates, so check the local listings around then. I'm attaching a listing for upcoming events here, in case there's anything of interest.
