After reading the many play by play accounts at the Bottom Line and other places she has performed it is our pleasure to give our view of her concert in Chicago last night! Ironically, Lucy was not the headliner if you construe who opens first as not being the main attraction. Well, let me tell you...Lucy was the real deal on Friday nite! You knew as soon as she took the stage that most of the people that had come to this great folk venue were there to see Lucy. There was a very enthusiastic and supportive bond for Lucy and her music. I was afraid that she would only do a handful of her songs and then give way to Carrie Newcomer, the featured perfomer, I assume. But Lucy came to sing and her almost dozen or so songs were sandwiched between her usual great patter on stage. Sometimes her conversations between songs are as revealing as the lyrics which she has written. The more she performed the more the crowd responded with sustained appreciation. When her set was over she tried to leave the stage only to find they had locked the door from which she was to exit...and she was forced to return to the mike...even though there was no doubt that the audience was demanding an encore. She opened the selection to the shouts of the audience and Guinevere prevailed (that was Carol's choice and I was the designated screamer, ha). I think if the mistress of ceremonies hadn't had to keep the evening going that Lucy would have had to stay up on stage much longer as I don't think we were ready for her to finish but, alas...Lucy tried the other side of the stage and the exit on that side did work. (By the way, Sharon...I was scouring the area for baked goods and it must be an east coast thing because the beautiful coffee cake Carol had baked was confiscated at the door for breaking the rule of no food to be brought in to the concert area....no just kidding...but I didn't see anybody with lewafs or other stuff...so we didn't feel like Lucy was neglected by our oversight, ha) Oh, by the way...Lucy did mention that she had taken guitar lesson at the Old Town School as a 17 year old which I found kind of prophetic. So, there was an intermission of 15 or so minutes before we returned to the second half. We got to visit with Bill K., who has seen many Lucy concerts, and is headed to Pittsburgh on Oct 26 to get his critique and he was definitely thumbs up, as well. We only lasted about 5 songs for Carrie Newcomer...it just didn't work for us and so we left at the applause as unobtrusively as we could only to rush through the doors to run into none other than....yes..Lucy. We had the nicest visit. She seemed a little surprised at the networking of the famous "lucy-list" and when I explained how real the Bottom Line had become for us because of Sharon's descriptions and I said "you know Sharon G"...Lucy said "Oh, I know Sharon...I mean I REALLY know Sharon"...we both laughed because it was like being transported in time and space after all the things that are described and written here...just like you're continuing a conversation and now you have real people instead of just the cyberspace word and your imagination. It was a really fun connection for both of us. I told her that there were Chicagoans that were planning to go to Pittsburgh just to see her and I think she was sincerely blown away so for those of you that go be sure to tell her who you are...I know she is appreciative of the support by her reaction when we told her. I found her to be a sincere person that matched her easy going stage persona. I know we will never be as famous as Sharon G but she did ask us our names which caught me off guard and then shook our hand...pretty classy and down to earth, we thought. Well, that's our report...I'm sure others that were there can add even more but we definitely had a great time.
