Lucy's so-called "CD Release Party" at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis Saturday night was spectacular! Sold out and (so said Red House owner Bob Feldman who introduced her) people turned away. (Lucinda had sold out the larger First Avenue a week or so earlier. I was in line on the street an hour before the Lucy show waiting for the doors to open with about a hundred other people and their enthusiasm. I stepped back out to pick up my wife and the babysitter and when we came back at five 'til, they had just made an announcement about "saved seats" and people were beginning to look at our pair of Row Two Center seats like medium rare T-bone steaks (or fresh guacamole and hot corn chips for you vegans!) Lucy played two full sets with an intermission and no warm-up act. John Herrington did more than "help out" as an earlier posting had described his role-he took it over the top! I know he didn't play all of the leads and slide guitar on the album, but he had a music stand and sheet music in front of him and he played all of the fills and leads as perfectly as if they were his own, adding the occasional vocal harmony. A real pro! The new T-shirts were there. They are teal....Lucy commented upon how long and hard she struggled with the color choice, finally delving deep into her subconscious. Out popped the color teal....which she later realized was the same color as her car. She obviously must spend a lot of time in her car. I had photos on the merchandise table of the World's First Lucy T-shirts, custom made by me for myself and my friend Lisa for the Winnipeg Folk Fest last July....(The red "I Love Lucy" heart on the front with "KAPLANSKY", jersey-style on the back shoulders.) John came on-and-off the stage several times during the night to give Lucy a chance to display her amazing solo presence for the appropriate tunes. FIRST SET: The Angels Rejoiced in Heaven Last Night (?) (the gospel number from sHAroNg's Oct. 2nd review of the Bottom Line Show) End of the Day One Good Reason Ten Year Night No More Excuses (New. Third song in Lucy's 'angry' trilogy) The Swimming Song Broken Things For Once in Your Life Scorpion SECOND SET: The Kid Promise Me Turn the Lights Back On That's Mathematics / A Song About Pi Somewhere Out There Love is the Ride Still Life The Return of the Grievous Angel ENCORES: Guinevere The Heart Next show around here is the 100-year-old, fully restored Mable Tainter Theater in Menomenie, Wisconsin about an hour down the interstate. It's the first night of Hanukkah, December 4th-just before the beginning of her European tour....She's likely flying out of here because of Red House here in town so you can forward all of your baked goods to me and I'll be sure she gets (most of) them. E-mail me if you are interested in nice tickets because I might end up with extras. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Oct 1999 19:56:44 +0100 From: "jenny.frog" Subject: Re: [Re: [lucy-list] name that song] Yo > You should also check out cd's by Lynn Miles and Julie Miller. I've heard both of them on the radio over here - wasn't so wowed by lynn, but julie os really great...the first time i heard 'broken things', i was like, 'wait...where have i heard this before....? hmmm....'. Now i really want to hear lucy singing it again. I really ought to buy julie's album, it sounds like it'll be brill...too bad i'm broke, i just bought about ten cds...woe is me :( jenny* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Oct 1999 16:43:46 +0100 From: "jenny.frog" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Nanci G > I actually read a *terrible* review of this new album... anybody have >it? > is it all that bad? NO, but don't take my word for it...i think you have to really, really appreciate nanci's music that's all. she hooked up with the London Symphony Orchestra to record 12 of her old songs, a new one and a buddy holly cover. it's....different. not the kind of cheesey film -type music you imagine....but i really love it. Oh, and i was lookinhg at steve earle's tour dates...yesterday three or four days in ireland were added on, part of his campaign against the death sentence. go steve!! go!!! but why ain't he coming to glasgow...??? jenny* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1999 21:20:51 EDT From: Wblr4@aol.com Subject: Re: [Re: [lucy-list] name that song] Julie Miller is really great...to me, she sounds like a female singer who is a favorite of mine and Carol's named Sam Phillips. Actually, Julie Miller sounds like a cross between Cyndi Lauper and Sam Phillips. A fetching combination, to be sure. This weekend we bought CD's by Julie Miller, Lynn Miles, Susan Werner and Patti Griffin based on recommendations by all of you Lucy-listers. We haven't been disappointed yet. Thanks for helping us discover new artists we wouldn't have known about otherwise! Of course, Lucy is still #1 with us.
