We thought it was an unusually good show with the Nields playing as warm-up band. Dar and both Nields were in rare form, saying they had barrowed Richard's razor before the show to shave their armpits. It was a hilarious moment; not to mention two encores and a wonderful nite of music. Cant wait to see Alison Kraus and the Union St. same place in Nov. Cry Cry Cry (with N. & K. Nields) 19. 2nd encore: Auld Lang Syne Cry Cry Cry and Nerissa and Katrina Nields put on a fine show at the venerable Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Del. It was the last date for the trio on the current tour, although they have a few scattered bookings on the calendar for the remainder of the year. A few highlights were the Nields sisters doing "Easy People" during their opening set with Cry Cry Cry singing backing harmonies. The Nields sisters returned the favor in the Cry Cry Cry set with the old Hank Williams standard, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and during the first encore with Johnny Cash's "Cry Cry Cry." The sound of these five singers together was unforgettable. Richard Shindell said from the stage that Buddy Miller's "My Love Will Follow You" will be on his next CD. For the fashion-conscious: Lucy Kaplansky wore the black Guess jeans and black sleeveless top (I'd call it a vest, but what do I know?); Dar was in a floor-length blue dress. Of the three Cry Cry Cry shows I saw this year, this one was clearly the best. There were sound problems at the Bridgeton Folk Festival and Lucy was suffering from a cold at the Birchmere in January (although her singing was wonderful that night in spite of it.) Lead guitarist Billy Masters seemed to be having sound level concerns Saturday night, but from the Dress Circle balcony where we sat, his volume was just right. There were just a couple of notes that seemed a little out of balance in one song. I really appreciate the way he shakes his guitar and uses the volume pedal to mimic a pedal-steel swell (especially on "Ten Year Night.") His solos were outstanding and his Dobro work added a nice country touch. The accompaniment on "Mary Magdalene" consisted mostly of Richard on the Ovation mandolin (at high volume) and Billy on the Danelectro bass, with Dar coming in on guitar as the song's dynamics increase in intensity. It is one of the few times you hear a mandolin used this way and it works well on this song. After the show, it was nice to say a brief "hi" to Lucy and Rick in the lobby of this old theater. It'll be nice to see Lucy solo again this fall. As much as I like the Cry Cry Cry album and the solo mini-sets the trio did on this tour, I discovered that I hit my maximum with three of these shows with these songs. I was especially thankful that Dar played "February" on Saturday, which I prefer over "The Christians and the Pagans" (the other song I have heard her perform with CCC.) I can't get enough of Lucy's TYN, and I enjoy hearing it with just her as well as with Dar and Richard. Richard has performed three different solo songs in the three shows I saw-"The Next Best Western" was probably the best, and that one was the first. I also like "Are You Happy Now?" and either of those songs is more accessible to me than "Fishing." By the third show, I was eagerly anticipating the solo works of these three, figuring that without question, I would get to hear Lucy sing "TYN," possibly hear Dar do "February" and would probably be surprised-and was-by Richard's selection. I applaud Cry Cry Cry for this project and the ensuing tour. They did a lot for the other songwriters they featured, and in no small way, they expanded their own separate audiences for their solo work. Who knows what the future will bring for these three? Perhaps another album? With these three very talented singers and songwriters, they could produce a second album of their own songs, backing each other on their own work. Imagine the possible dynamics here! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 12:58:28 EDT From: Wblr4@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Cryx3 in Wilmington, Del. Great review...I am a major Lucy fan and TYN is a never get tired of CD. For me, she is up there with Allison Kraus and Dee Carstensen for pure enjoyment. Thanks again for you enjoyable play by play. I saw Stacey Sunday and she and her husband Mark Stuart both had nice things to say about Lucy too. Anyone from the NY area should try and make Stacey's show tomorrow Tuesday night at Fez. I can't confirm this but I'm told the headlining act that night is Victoria Williams.
