I've been loaded down with work and just have not been able to sit and collect my thoughts which roll around like marbles on a tile floor. Anyway, Lucy was great! She and Rick said they knew they were down south when they passed a bank sign showing the temperature of 106. Spent nearly an hour getting her set up and a sound check done, and then took them down the street for dinner. Rick suggested they could ride in the back of my pickup truck for a true "southern experience", but I think Lucy definitely preferred to take their car. That worked out to their advantage since, while dinner was delicious (fairly authentic Italian for this part of the world, and Lucy recommended the spaghetti to the audience during the show ), we got pressed for time and I still had to drive home to pick up my wife and son. I really enjoyed talking with them over dinner. We spoke about favorite musicians (Lucy says she listens to Steve Earle almost exclusively right now), and Rick teased that she mostly listened to her own CDs. They also gave me some helpful suggestions regarding working with booking agents, and talked about the business in general. Rick kind of did a double-take when I mentioned sharon g and the "two Rons". Sometimes folks forget how far the 'net reaches :-) The set list: 1. Speaking with the Angel 2. One Good Reason 3. Five in the Morning 4. Broken Things 5. The Angels Rejoiced In Heaven Last Night - Lucy claimed she had never performed this old "gospel" style tune before, but was inspired by the venue (a converted church) 6. Ten Year Night 7. End of the Day 8. Swimming Song 9. If You Could See What I Can See - she played this one on the piano, and tagged it with a Johnny Cash tune but I didn't catch the title 10. This Is Mine Break 11. The Kid 12. Scorpion 13. Turn the Lights Back On - broke a string on this one, which she said she did regularly :-) 14. Return of the Grievous Angel 15. For Once In Your Life 16. Edges (my request) 17. Irving's Song (On An Asteroid With You?) 18. By Way of Sorrow We brought her out for two encores: 1. The Thief & Guinevere 2. Mary and the Soldier Overall, a terrific evening, Lucy seemed to really enjoy herself and she and Rick were there for nearly an hour afterwards, selling CDs and signing autographs. She is scheduled to be back in Charlotte in February. I can't wait. I resent this. You don't have to heap dirt on someone else to praise Lucy. Lucinda Williams rocks my world, and so does Lucy. Also, as I look at who sent this -- heh heh -- how would you feel if someone said this about Emmylou? I am so preoccupied with Steve Earle right now. Did any New Yorkers hear the Sessions at W. 54th last Friday? WOW. Is "Ellis Unit One" on any albums of his? Is that an old song, or new? I knew he was fucking amazing, but I had no idea he had such good politics, too! I just got "Train A'Comin" and I seem to have forgotten that I own any other CDs, except of course "Wrecking Ball". (And "Flesh and Bone". Somehow that has more staying power for me than TYN.) I didn't think his acoustic version of "Goodbye" could be as good as Emmylou's -- sorry, she's Emmylou! -- but it is. Wow. Does anyone know where to find guitar tabs for him (particularly that song)? My only beef is with "Sometimes She Forgets" -- like, hey guys, wait until she lets her guard down, and then you can just rush in there! > Rick kind of did a double-take when I mentioned sharon g and the "two Rons". > Sometimes folks forget how far the 'net reaches :-) that's really funny! Sharon, I forgot to tell you, you have to come over and see my new couch. It's big and purple, and I love it. I intend to spend the few days before school lying on it and listening to Steve with a big smile on my face. (And maybe I'll have a meal once in a while.) jessica - ------------------------------jns4470@is.nyu.edu---------------------------- I can't remember if we said goodbye. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 18:10:00 EDT From: Donoss53@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Lucinda i agree jessica ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 19:30:13 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Steve Earle, Lucy, sharon g! << I am so preoccupied with Steve Earle right now. "Ellis Unit One" is on the soundtrack from the film Dead Man Walking. I also have it on a Steve Earle e.p. with the V-Roys, "Johnny Too Bad". My copy is an import but I think that it was eventually released domestically. Two versions of the title track, a V-Roys song called "Straight Highway" and "Ellis Unit One", which I think is a different version than the one on the DMW soundtrack.
