In the latter stages of the second set, when the trio performed song after song they made famous in the '60s, they squeezed in "The Kid," the Buddy Mondlock song that also is performed by Cry Cry Cry. My girlfriend, Nancy, and I heard the introductory chords and I looked over at her, saying, "I recognize this song," when Paul Stookey started singing lead... "I'm the kid who ran away with the circus...." Although everyone around us had been singing along with "If I Had a Hammer," I was the kid singing along with one of my favorite Cryx3 tunes. Nance and I cheered. Obviously, Lucy, Richard and Dar aren't the only ones who appreciate the harmonous opportunities this song offers. We found ourselves wondering if PP&M had heard the song on the Cryx3 disc and picked it up from there, or if they had arrived at the song some other way. In a side note, I think it was on Friday that National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" did a 15-year retrospective on the fire that claimed 13 firefighters that is the subject of the James Keelaghan song, "Cold Missouri Waters," also covered by Cryx3. Although I missed the broadcast, I recognized the story during advance trailers for the program on the radio. And in my weekend mail came tickets for the last scheduled Cryx3 concert on the current tour, Sept. 18 at the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Del. Anyone from this list going? Like the name of the group itself, good things happen in threes, eh? - -- Jay Votel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Aug 1999 19:10:27 PDT From: "sharon g" Subject: [lucy-list] newport & the teeshirt i'm not quite recovered from my past few lucy k days wed i was at steve earle and the bluegrass dukes- he did three sets- one acoustic with the dukes when needed on microphone for all -they step up as needed- tim obrian, darrell scott- danny crouch and casey? on fiddle teh dukes do the middel set- bluegrass music and trad bluegrass and then the show ends with steve with retooled songs to add the dukes- he did almost all of the mountain and alot of his more popular stuff-he was sneering at requests so somewhere out there or 10 year night was out of the question- he would not have played good - then i saw duke levine at the world trade center with mary chapin he did not hear me durin sound check when i asked him to play 10 year night- tehn on to newport- lucy had on the grey vest and black jeans she was taken by meeting jerry of ben & jerrys and i think taken with the whole experience - right as she started by way of sorrow or down by the water- her guitar was given horrible feedback teh techs tries to help her with more mikes- she ended up using richards guitar- she recovered well but seemed taken off center- she went on with the show did back up for special guest cliff eberhardt on fix your blues and did an exceptional job on the harmonies- she then did a lively version of 10 year night for her single song someone other than me requested it- teh most amazing was the nield sisters, cliff billy masters c3 all doing hank williams i'm so lonesome i could cry the teeshirt- it's blue and says in one & grey lucy kaplansky 10 year night on the front on the reverse open your eyes- i spoke to lucy after the show- she looks tired but clearly the festival season has energized her i say these things not her it was odd for her to see me "out of context" not in ny i asked for rick -he wasnt there-awww next stop lincoln center aug 21st sharonG _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
