It was by a local girl > called Juliette Turner. Juliett played to a very packed Whelans on Thursday night and was talking halfway through the set about the slow down in the peace process one year after the Omagh car bomb and about how many people had spoken to her about playing Broken Things. I've heard both Julie and Lucy play Broken Things in Dublin, but had no idea that Juliet had covered it. (for those of you that have a copy of Peter Mulvey's "Glencree" album recorded live in Dublin last year, Juliet comes in on vocals on Hard Times and If I Were). (Unfortunately, She didn't play Broken Things on Thursday). ...I owe ye an apology too 'cos I promised you a review of Lucy's Whelans gig at the start of June, but I got side-tracked with a change at work - [I posted the review from the Irish Times - one of the national newspapers over here to make up for it] ... Anyhow - it was excellent - it had rained and rained and rained all day long, publicity wasn't the best at the time (I was off work on study leave and had holed up in a library across the road from Whelans, so I had been going up and down Camden Street for the previous week and the posters only appeared 2 days before the gig), the fact that Steve Earle and the Del McRoury band were closing their European tour in the Olympia Theatre (just up the road from Whelans) didn't help.... ...but Lucy shone that night. She really was the Business. And she levelled with the audience at the very start of the gig, when she accidentally bumped her guitar rather loudly off the stool during the opening chords of her first song ... so the ice was broken more or less immediatly. Not only was her singing impressive, but her knowledge of "Irishism's" between songs really impressed us ("Ah yeah, that's grand..." "Thanks a million..."). I'm not going to post what she asked us to keep secret 'cos then all hell will break loose the next time she tours Ireland and the UK.... ....so Lucy, if you're reading this, Mum's the word. That's the lot - have a good weekend Gerry ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 09:14:40 PDT From: "sharon g" Subject: [lucy-list] darryl purpose muchj to my surprise- darryl purpose opened for ellis paul last night at fez- he did a short set of about 7 songs including singer songwriter heavaen - wher harry chapin takes him on a taxi ride for 2.50 on a 20 dollar fare- through the cafes, and porches where singer/songwriters (dead ones) are hanging- spilling lyrics excahngin words- steve goodman with phil ochs, with jim croce- ya get it he is a large man wiht many stories involving black jack his other profession- he said he finished his 3rd cd- with ellis singing backing vocal and our own lucy K- hte lovely singing on it- a duet he told me privately- as the lucy clan was absent at fez- that one clapper for lucy K was me. i told him he made you all- he said he subs but does not read he spoked highly of lcuyK and we talked that ny is her "hometown" she is from chicago i said- he said she has lived here a long time i said i am from boston but have lived here a long time- i'm a native now too-he signed a post card for me he acknowedged fez is lucy turf and it is- she owns the room as this was the third time i've seen ellis there and he uses the room walks around- he also owns the room- he commmands the room sound the is incredible anyway- even wiht the subway rumbling under your feet- the subway addds ambiance- until newport sharon _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. It was a split bill, and the show was pure pleasure. Karen Savoca opened, and was in good spirits. She trashed Linda Tripp, and commented on how much fun FRFF was. She and Pete Heitzman played: Nowhere To Go Here They Come Bittersweet Que Fue (sp?) You Just Don't Get It (dedicated to Linda Tripp) Till My Heart (back vocals with Lucy) On The River Road E: Walk That Bridge Shortly thereafter, Lucy came out. She was dressed in her trademark black vest, and black jeans. She sounded a little tired. She flattened some of her vocals. But still, she was terrific: Speaking With The Angel End Of The Day Five In The Morning One Good Reason Broken Things Ten Year Night (with Karen & Pete - Karen harmonizes with Lucy very well) Turn The Lights Back On The Swimming Song For Once In Your Life Scorpion (Lucy asked the audience to pick Scorpion or By Way Of Sorrow) E: Guinivere E: Someday Soon (with Karen & Pete) E2: I've Just Seen A Face (with Karen & Pete). The highlights were the last two tracks. Karen & Lucy reached for high notes. Only Johnatha Brooke makes my skin glisten like that. After the show, Lucy told me about the T-Shirts. The front will say "Lucy Kaplansky Ten Year Night", and the back will say "Open Your Eyes". I forgot what color she said. I also got a good photo of her & I together which I will get on my web page one of these days. Other than the Lincoln Center show, it looks like Lucy won't be back to the NY area until the Emerlin Theater show. Yikes! I hope to see some of you at the Jimmy Lafayve show tomorrow at the Blixt Cabin Concert.
