OK call me names, flame me, poop on my cheerios or correct me if I'm totally out of line. I'm mixed on this subject of bootlegs! I'm having these little nagging tugs on my conscience about this bootleg stuff. Here we are, saying these artists don't get the recognition they deserve, then try to bootleg them. Ummm, isn't the recognition and/or success based on sales by record companies? Don't record companies base who they choose to wildly promote through sales? I feel that bootlegs aren't entirely fair to the struggling artists we all tend to promote. On the other hand, I'd love to hear some of them. I've been a Lucy fan for at least 5 years. Longer for Richard Shindell. I'd give a lot to have tapes from some of their shows. I'm not much interested in an artist that is so bent on collecting revenue from every instantiation of their music that they prohibit such. In fact, I believe that such makes the artist better known. While I have a large collection of bootlegs I purchase every official recording the artists usually make, or I wouldn't bother to collect the other stuff. In cases where bands, like the Dead, released such live material from their own superior recording archives, I've purchased those too. No flame intended, because you're basically trying to be fair, and I like fair. I hope that whatever boots of Lucy and Richard and so on make it around make it all around. It'll help their official release sales. It has been out for a few years by Julie Miller on CD. The CD is called "He Walks Through Walls" and it's number is MYRCD 6928. It's on the MYRRH label which is a "Christian" label, so a local religious store might have it if your record shop doesn't. Julie Miller's version is really nice, but when I heard Lucy K doing it live in Belfast a while back, I was so impressed. Her guitar chords and style suited the song so well. There is a third version on a CD which was released to raise funds for those affected by the Omagh bombing. It was by a local girl called Juliette Turner. Starting a "let's get so-and-so on 'Such-and-Such'" campaign can never hurt, though. As far as I can tell, anyway. My wife & I had a blast there, although we were pissed off that we had to wait for 1 hour outside in 90+ degree weather. When she completed her set, she asked the audience for requests. Both Mike & I shouted "Do you know any Lucy Kaplansky songs?" Kelly said "YES! I love Lucy! Her new CD is fantastic. I am going to sing A Child's Hands' just for you guys!" Her band turned the tune into a rocking swing tune. Look for us on Sessions in the fall. Mike & I sat next behind the band in between the bass player & the guitar player. OK, I'm kidding. Kelly did not play "A Child's Hands". Sharon, you did this to us! I'm off to see the Karen Savoca/Lucy show tomorrow night at Bodles in Chester, NY. This is my fourth time seeing Lucy this month (technically 5). I hope she covers Joni Mitchell's "Carie". Anyone else coming up to Chester tomorrow? I'm easy to spot (I'm 6'6").
