Lucy 'did' the first of her two Fez gigs last night, and she really 'DID' the Fez all right.... The place was completely packed and there were at least a dozen Listers there (hi all). The opening act was some guy named David Wyatt (??) who had a nice voice and played piano well, but he had weak material and played for over 45 minutes --which was about 46 minutes too long because he lost the crowd halfway into his first song. Peter Mulvey will open for Lucy at Tuesday's Fez show. After what seemed like days of listening to the opener, we got to see the beautiful and rested Dr. Lucille of Kaplansky who was just back from her vacation in the Southwest (you remember, that's "the desert air is hot and dry" place). Lucy opened with He's Speaking With the Angel (just beautiful) and accelerated upward from there. She had Jon Herington (who played on the new album) sitting in to play lead guitar for her on a good number of songs. Jon did a great job of complimenting Lucy without detracting from anything that she was doing either vocally or guitar-wise. She did most of Ten Year Night including Five in the Morning, which was just beautifully done (I don't recall ever having heard it live before), and several songs from Flesh and Bone including a monster version of If You Could See with Lucy singing at the piano. I think that watching and listening to Lucy sing at the piano gets one a bit closer to heaven. RonG and RockinRon (as well as others) will not be pleased to hear that they missed seeing Lucy sing Thirsty Boots with the great Eric Anderson who was in attendance. The way Lucy entwined her voice with his was just amazing. As great a song as Thirsty Boots is, it has never sounded better than we heard it last night-period-full stop. Lucy also sang Broken Pieces which Julie Miller wrote and Lucy said will likely be included on her next album. It was a fairly long show with two full encores. It was sensational. Lucy seems to have gotten to the point where she is realizing just how strong her fan base is becoming. In addition to the talent, joy and warmth Lucy has always brought to the stage, she now radiates a marvelous confidence as well. When I left the club, people were all crowding up to the front to talk to Lucy. It was a great night.
