But watch out, because there's George Jones, and Hank Williams ... but I think these paths are orthogonal to what modern country has become. Gram and Emmylou preserved a musical way for another generation who wouldn't be caught dead listening to what they thought was the true child of the genre. And Lucy (whew, there is my lucy content) echoes a part of that rich human sound... in GB she is considered country, and I suspect she is classified that way quite often. Truth be told, I think Patty Griffin is more like Emmylou is now than Emmylou THEN is like Emmylou now. But that's just me. I am also a Gram Parsons fan... the first album, what.. pieces of the sky? That's the one that kills me. And the Emmylou original on that album "Boulder to Birmingham" is one of the finer examples of what that music touches for me. Not long ago I saw Emmylou in SLC and she did lots of old faves at a little place... I would love to see Lucy cover a couple of these tunes, like Boulder to Birmingham. And I wish Lucy would come to SLC again soon. Actually, I was excerpting what someone else had written about Newport. I am absolutely stoked about this year's Falcon Ridge lineup, so much so that I'm buying a ticket rather than volunteering so I don't miss any of the music. I am a huge fan of Greg Brown, Cry3, Ani DiFranco, and the Nields especially, as well as Vance Gilbert and Cheryl Wheeler and some other people I'm forgetting, and am quite quite psyched to go. Hey Sharon, you still got room for one in the car? Sorry I didn't see you at Clearwater. Thanks everyone for the suggestions about which Emmylou album to buy next. I'm drooling over that 3-CD set. Keep the suggestions coming!
