Hi all, As promised, here's my report on tonight's show in Pasadena, CA. It was held in the Neighborhood Church, a very nice room for a concert. Great sound, intimate without being crowded. Probably about a hundred or so in the crowd. The set list was much the same as reported at previous stops on this tour, including the "Swimming Song" and "The Pi Song." "Guinevere" and "Scorpion" were not performed, however. She did three Cry3 songs, including "Speaking With the Angel," "By Way of Sorrow," and "The Kid," by request from the audience, which she said she was playing publicly and solo for only the second time. She seemed to be a bit reserved for the first two songs, but opened up and relaxed when the crowd reacted so strongly and positively. In fact, she said that she's "never had so much fun playing in Los Angeles" and was impressed that the crowd was so large "compared to her last LA audience." Having attended her last solo LA gig about a year and a half ago, I can attest to that, as it was held in a place called Genghis Cohen, in about the size of a large coat closet (I didn't see Cry3 at the Troubadour). She did two songs tonight at the piano, "If You Could See" and something I didn't recognize. Back on guitar, she also covered Joni Mitchell's "Carey." Her friend Matt Cardenza(?) joined her for a few songs, playing mandola. He was terrific, and added a lot to "Love is the Ride" and "When I Get To the Border." Her parents weren't there, but her older brother Spike was; I briefly met him. For the final encore, she asked for requests, and I shouted out for "The Tide." She thought about it for a minute, wryly saying "Oh, yeah, there's a real upbeat song to end the show on!" but played a wonderful version, quite different from the one on the album. After the show, I got her autograph on my copy of TYN, and gave her a couple pages from the galley proofs of my upcoming JavaScript book, where in the Acknowledgements, I listed her as part of the musical inspiration for the book. She dug it. It was a very nice end to a great evening. Ok well she had Nina Gerber playing with her who is way cool. They didn't practice the songs beforehand and she just gets up there and totally wings it. Everyone there was so impressed, as was Lucy! She kept making comments about it! She played songs off Ten Year Night and Flesh and Bone (maybe stuff off her first record but I don't have it so I couldn't say) and did Speaking with the Angels and By Way of Sorrow off Cry^3. She sounded great and really looked like she was having a great time up on stage. Morgan's is a pretty small venue but it was packed. I guess people were standing in the back (I was in the front). During the encore somebody asked for Nina to do a solo so Lucy sat at the edge of the stage to watch. She was so close I could have kicked her. Not that I would have wanted to but still! That's how small and intimate the place is =) My friend had volunteered us to sell merch so that's what we did. Lucy told us she never had people come specifically to sell for her and was happy. We got to stick around after everbody left and talk to Lucy (about nothing exciting except N. Cal people - she told me she's booked for a Guyserville houseconcert in the fall, That's a little closer for me than Monterey!). Plus, we got to dole out the merch money to everyone and get a high five from Lucy for making the money work out. She really needs to get some fun merch to sell, like bumper stickers. I would totally stick something on my car that blatantly advertised her. My Nields sticker in lonely on my car. Anways... But it was a great show, my first time seeing Lucy live, solo. I had a great time and can't wait till she comes back in the fall. I'm definitely going to see the Lucy and Eddie From Ohio double bill in Santa Cruz. Yahoo that will be exciting! off to the land of finals, katie http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~stohlman PS - I drove across the Golden Gate Bridge 4 times in 4 days beating my previous record of 4 times in 5 days for the last batch of West Coast Nields shows.
