Nina is one of the finest guitar >players you will *ever* get to see / hear. I have admired her work as a >guitarist / producer for years and finally got to see her play earlier >this year. Wow!! I have to agree. Having known her as 'The One Who Played With Kate Wolf', I recently went to see Nina Gerber (in Australia, actually) playing guitar with a singer called Molly O'Brian (American, I've no idea where exactly). It was just the two of them on the stage, and she was a truly stunning guitar player. She swapped between jazz, blues, and folk without batting a eyelid, and sounded like she was born to play every one of them. Best guitar player I've seen in a LONG time. By the way, her Kate Wolf tribute album is worth getting, too - covers by Nanci Griffith, John Gorka, Kathy Mattea, etc, and Nina Gerber herself. When I interviewed Lucy about a month ago, while the interview was winding down we started talking about musical tastes and who we were crazy about. My 15-year-old daughter was with us and told Lucy that "my Dad and I are total Everything But The Girl freaks, that we listen to more ebtg than just about anything else in the musical universe and that Tracy Thorn is one of the most amazing singers unknown to most of the world. Lucy looked at us and admitted she had never heard ebtg. Shocked as we were, I told her the ebtg albums she should start with and promised myself the next time I saw Lucy I would buy her the first ebtg album. Tracey Thorn is definitely a singer Lucy should hear. Who is he, any info? >> Well, if you're talking about *Richard* Shindell, then then info is this: Take a Civil War widow, an INS agent, a truck-driver, a medieval mailman, some guy named William Taylor, a flooded-out Bible-belt young mother, a jilted boyfriend on Halloween, a man on death row, a molester, um, Mary Magdalene, a new father, mix in a dash of Gordon Lightfoot, a hint of Tom Paxton, and (according to some) a smidgen of Michael Stipe, and then run -- don't walk -- to your nearest CD store to pick up -- in this order -- "Sparrow's Point," "Blue Divide" and "Reunion Hill," then come home and check out . . . http://www.richardshindell.com and the very excellent Richard Shindell discussion list or take a look at the archives at . . . http://ifolk.iserver.net/shindell/stax/ . . . and if you're a guitar player, check out the transcriptions to his songs at . . . http://members.aol.com/rongrittz/page/chords.htm . . . and that'll be all you'll need to know. If you're not *immediately* knocked off your feet, I'll make RG's money back guarantee: I'll buy the CDs from you.
