"A marvelous interpretive singer, Kaplansky stands no less tall than Nanci Griffith, Lucinda Williams, and even her old friend Colvin." according to CD Review. Lucy Kaplansky recently joined forces with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell to form a "folk supergroup." Calling themselves Cry Cry Cry, the threesome recorded some of their favorite songs written by other artists. The resulting album, Cry Cry Cry (which the New Yorker dubbed "a collection of lovely harmonizing and pure emotion," and to which Entertainment Weekly gave an "A" rating), has met with astonishing success in stores and on radio. A national tour of sold-out concerts by the trio has served to introduce Lucy's luminous voice to a new expanse of eager listeners. Kaplansky started out singing in Chicago bars. When she was barely out of high school, she took off for New York. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers - Shawn Colvin, John Gorka, Suzanne Vega, Bill Morrissey, Cliff Eberhardt, and others -- and immediately fit in. With a beautiful flair for harmony, Lucy was a favorite singing partner. Most often she found herself singing with Colvin and everyone envisioned big things for themselves. She harmonized on Colvin's Steady On, on Nanci Griffith's Lone Star State of Mind and Little Love Affairs, and on four John Gorka albums. She also landed soundtrack credits, singing with Suzanne Vega on Pretty in Pink and with Griffith on The Firm. Lucy Kaplansky's first two albums on Red House Records, The Tide and Flesh and Bone turned in impressive appearances on the Gavin Report's Americana and A3 charts (reaching top 10 and top 20 respectively, as well as earning Honorable Mention Indie Awards from the Association for Independent Music. She was also featured on NPR's All Things Considered, West Coast Live, Acoustic Café and Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight. Lucy is featured in SOLO: Women Singer-Songwriters in Their Own Words, a book featuring today's hottest female performers (Jewel, Sarah Maclachlan, and Sheryl Crow among them) and will be featured in Lipshtick, a collection of essays by NPR commentator Gwen Macsai. Ten Year Night is Kaplansky's third Red House album. # # # - ----------------- End Forwarded Message ----------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 14:20:12 EDT From: SpecGlobal@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Re: West Coast and UK shows In a message dated 5/12/99 1:08:17 PM Eastern Daylight Time, tom@negrino.com writes: << This is Pasadena, CA, folks, not the one in TX or anywhere else. For those who haven't seen Lucy in the last while, I think that you are all in for a very pleasant surprise. As a number of us have written, over the last few months Lucy has seemingly gotten even stronger and more commanding. I wonder if her dad will be at any of the West Coast venues to play piano and sing. I've never seen him sit in with Lucy, but the way she tells the stories it sure sounds like his presence adds a special dimension to the shows. As I have posted, my wife and I keep bringing our friends with us to Lucy's gigs and people just keep getting blown away by her. Do your friends a favor....bring them....they will thank you later.... Enjoy! Just to be pedantic, she lives in Vermont, but very close to the NH border. Like, within fifteen miles. But I agree completely with the rest of Ron's assessment. Lisa is fantastic. Purgatory Cafe is my current fave, though her waltz is a lot of fun, too. 'later, jeff. - -- History does not always repeat itself.
