So, there are vicious rumours ciculating that Lucy is playing Dublin June 2nd... which is excellent, because its been ages since she was here last at Christmas 97. Steve Earle is playing Dublin with the Del McCroury band on May 16th then he's going elsewhere around Europe.... ...but he's back for one more gig on June 2nd - he'll close up his European Tour that night so... I just thought that Lucy might be interested to know that Steve will be playing on the same night as her (just in case they want to meet up - Steve came on for Gillian Welch last time around, but that won't happen on the 2nd - his sets are waaay too long...) - but she might be interested in meeting up with him before or after. Also.... if there's a end-of-tour session somewhere, I really want to be there :o) (Yeah yeah, I know - there are two hopes, and one of them is Bob....) but it might be nice if someone could get word to Lucy that he's in town that night. Gerry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 06:57:07 EDT From: SteadyOnDC@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Ellis/Vance & Lucy Speaking of Ellis and Vance....they are playing together tonight at the Somerville Theatre. Lucy is playing in the area tonight also..."around the corner" from Ellis & Vance. Lucy has TWO shows now....at Club Passim in Harvard Square tonight. That's a good (strong) sign considering the talent playing in this area the same night. Now if we could just get all three of them together in one show... Kinda like Cry Cry Cry...but different. ; ) - -Denise ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 May 1999 08:14:49 EDT From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy in Spookyville I was surprised to see the Rosendale Cafe once again on Lucy's tour list...I saw her there about a year or so ago and, with the success of Cry3 and Ten Year Night, I would have thought she had grown beyond teeny weeny questionable venues such as this. I mean, it was a decent enough place--if post Woodstock hippie nouveau vegetarian ramshackle storefront eateries are your thing. Then again, it was only $5 a person (+ you had to order at least $10 worth of mashed yeast or bean pudding or whatever the heck that crap was that I ate) so I guess it wasn't such a bad deal. It helps if you relate to dingy. Ands you don't mind sharing a table with strangers. But if you go a word of caution--Rosendale is one of those downtrodden, depressing, long forgotten, ghostlike little makeshift towns, too many of which dot the upstate New York landscape. There ain't a hell of a lot around in the way of accommodations unless you want to swing big bucks for Mohonk Mountain House or tempt a sojourn into the urban sprawl that is New Paltz. Actually, we found a bed and breakfast that made up in comfort and value what it lacked in charm, not far from Rosendale--the people at the restaurant could probably give you the name of it. Just trying to be helpful in my own seasoned cynical, smart alecky way. This is by no means is to be interpreted as a slight toward Lucy (and Rick, for that matter--I know he'll read this) for whom I have the utmost respect and love dearly. As a huge fan, I just want better things (venues) for her. She deserves it. Most likely she's had a commitment to the joint for a long time. Which may explain this spooky gig. I have never been to Rosendale but read an article about it in the New York Times a while back. It sounded very much like a post Woodstock hippie nouveau vegetarian kind of a town which is being reborn by artisans, old (and young) hippies, NYC refugees and country home people who live up there part time. After reading the article, I thought I understood why Lucy had it on her dance card last year. Now, I don't know if I would want to live there, but it sure sounds like a place I wouldn't mind visiting. As for why Lucy is playing there, I don't have any real answer, but my guesses: it was booked ages ago (like a ton of her gigs are), she is repaying people who recognized brilliance earlier than some others, it fit her schedule, she has friends up there, she has fans up there, and, then again, it may just be that she wants to play up there for a dozen reasons which I am not clever enough to think of at this moment. However, I doubt that Lucy is confusing the gig with Town Hall. As for the food and sitting with strangers bit, that sounds like a lot of clubs--including the Bottom Line which really is our premier venue--and has food which would make one beg for veggy-bean mush. As for the downtrodden and forgotten part, again, I have not been there and I'm not sure I want to move there, but I think that seeing a show up there sounds like it might be neat. << As a huge fan, I just want better things (venues) for her. I just called and made a reservation for the Turning Point. I don't think it's on Lucy's schedule but there are two Turning Point shows July 18, at 5 PM and another at 8 PM. I was told there are still lots of tickets for both shows but it's a very small place so anyone wanting to go should make reservations ASAP. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 May 1999 19:05:34 -0400 From: Paul Rafanello Subject: Re: [lucy-list] ny event I'm looking forward to all the NYC shows too. I really am running the risk of falling into the "Too Much of a Good Thing" trap. It's different for me and Richard, though. I could watch him every night, because I've started to go to his shows more as a student of his guitar-playing style. As I try to get the songs on my chord site more accurate, each RS show I see teaches me several new things about the way he plays. For example, from the Turning Point show last week, I know that I need to make substantial changes to "Next Best Western" as well as post the chords to Blackie Farrell's "Sonora's Death Row," (which RockinRon somehow described as "bluesy" . . . sad/tragic, yes, bluesy, no). Does anyone know if these Lucy gigs are full-band shows? The Turning Point stage could be tight for a band, but I'm guessing Maxwell's could handle it. And what's the story on Fez . . . band or solo? Inquiring mimes want to know.
