This is where > it's happening! I am certain it was not meant as a judgement on Lucy's list. People do have lives you know. For those who need to leave this list, send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with the following command in the message body: un_ubscribe lucy-list (or lucy-list-digest) except use an "s" where I put the underscore symbol "_" above. (I did that so it wouldn't be caught by the majordomo processor and obeyed right here! :) ) If you receive the Digest version, specify lucy-list-digest instead of lucy-list. If you are using an email forwarding service, make sure that the From address you send from looks the same as the address you joined under, or the command will fail. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 12:16:32 EDT From: CrZ4Indigo@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Ten Year Night Hey all! Don't know all the details, but this will be the second time that xpn has featured this record. Besides playing the title song a bunch. Now all they need to do is make it the cd of the week. It was a very interesting article which of course mentioned that Lucy had at one time been partnered with Shawn Colvin. Being a Shawn Colvin fan (particularly of her early work) I kept my eyes and ears open. At one point I saw that Lucy was playing at some weird venue in NJ but I was totally unsuccessful in finding the venue. (More about that part later....) Many months later, it is a Friday and I am reading a local paper when I see a picture of this curly haired, dark beauty leaning against a wall. Very very pretty (me thinks), and it is --oh my!--it's that Lucy person!--and she is playing in a church which is only fifteen minutes from my house! So my wife and I go to the church and sit down for a show--of course, totally unaware we are about to be struck by lightening. Well, to make a long story short (which I am hopelessly bad at doing), the hairs stood up on the back of my neck from the first chord of Scorpion and didn't go down until Lucy had finished the show with Guinevere. After the show I bought The Tide and Flesh and Bone and tried to tell Lucy how amazing her performance was, but I walked away knowing that I had in no way communicated to her how much the beauty of her voice, and the honesty and intensity of her music had really affected me. Several more months go by, nonstop use is practically wearing out the two cds, when I see that Lucy is at that same weird venue from last year again (remember that part?). After a week of frantic emails and phone calls, I finally find the venue, which, it turns out, is actually someone's house where once a month they have house concerts on Sunday afternoons. After pleading (because both shows were sold out of course), my wife and I attend this magical show with Lucy playing in someone's living room. Musically, Lucy was even stronger at this show than the first time I saw her, and this new material (Ten Year Night songs) was just amazing. I was hooked --big time. After the show, while Lucy was selling cds and signing things, my wife and I started talking to Lucy's husband Rick about the show and songwriting (he actually asked us what we thought of One Good Reason, which they had just written and Lucy had just played for what I think was the first time in public). Lucy joined the conversation, and the four of us had this extended conversation about the Wall Street Journal article, her career, the music, songwriting, Rick's career (he is, of course, an esteemed film professor) etc. My wife and I were fans walking into this show, were totally amazed (again) at the performance Lucy gave at the show, and now we had found out that Lucy, who was just up there on the stage singing her heart out, is really this totally genuine, warm, intelligent and wonderful person . Talk about being hooked, there was no turning back after that.... Since that house concert I have seen Lucy perform many times. As I have said before, she has only gotten stronger and stronger with each show that I have seen. She is playing bigger venues and she is selling them out. She is being talked about and she is being played constantly on the radio. She has an album out that should win (or at least strongly contend for) the Grammy for Album of the Year. It has been pretty amazing to watch a part of this process take place and to know that Lucy is moving through a doorway that will lead her to a much wider recognition. Lucy has paid her dues and she deserves the wonderful success she is achieving. It couldn't happen to a more talented, nicer or more deserving person.
