J is an 11 year old boy I work with who lost his >family. A few weeks ago he asked me "Jana, do you know the rest of the poem >"Tyger Tyger Burning Bright?" I did. Greg came in >Friday night and played for the boys, including J., and performed J's poem >to music he'd written earlier in the day. J was so touched he cried, as did >I when Greg played it in the theatre during the early show. for those of you who have seen greg play live, you know it's astounding. for those who haven't, i can't think of a better way to be introduced to a most caring man and talented musician . here's the post: >"Solid Heart", a live Greg Brown concert recording benefiting the In Harmony >Foundation, is ready for release! > The CD features 15 cuts with Brown including several unavailable >on previous recordings. I have been reviewing the digests of the group and was unsure how to post until now. I wanted to expand my previous review a bit, because the show left such an impression on my wife and I. I haven't been able to escape the sound of Lucy's voice in my head since we left the IronHorse. My wifes blaring "Scorpion" in the background as I write this post. We had previously seen Lucy about six times and a CryCryCry show once. With the exception of the Cry show, most of the others were at small venues, in fact one was at a local church with only about 20 people in the audience. At times I couldn't believe that there were so few guests in some of the joints, I guess there just isn't enough networking going on here in the Hartford, CT area. I brought home "The Tide" just after it came out. We were preparing to paint a spare bedroom. My wife had never heard of Lucy so I just popped it into the CD player and asked her to listen. She was hooked immediately and didn't stop playing the CD for about a three months. I think the room got about three coats of paint that day! It's still her favorite, although her other discs get more time now. I swear she knows every note of every song. Nothing seems to lift her spirits like Lucy's music even though a lot of the songs are not exactly cheerful. I wonder if others in the group could share their experiences when they first got turned on to Lucy's music? Anyway the show at the IronHorse was so fantastic. Lucy's voice has improved so much. The versions of her songs were generally a bit slower and clearer than I had heard before. We sat right next to the sound board and the crew did a great job of balancing the vocals, guitar and piano. The songs were all sung with much feeling and she seemed to really have a good time. Lucy always seems nervous when she takes the stage, but Speaking With the Angels was a perfect icebreaker. Lucy has eyes of fire and her voice permeated every inch of that place. Does anyone in the group know how the sales of TenYearNight are going? I have witnessed the CD selling well locally at Borders, although we got our from RedHouse records about a day before they sold out. I wonder how the CD sells compared to CryCryCry which has the added fan base of Dar and Richard. Anyway, enough dribbling for now. Keep listening...... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 17:53:07 EDT From: MCatNYU@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Re: lucy at bottomline << Hey Michelle, do you go to NYU? I'd just gotten introduced to this tremendous world of Contemporary Folk music, and a friend loaned me several Fast Folk albums. Several voices made a huge impression on me -- Shawn Colvin, John Gorka, David Roth -- but there was this one voice that really cut through, this woman named Lucy Kaplansky (who at the time was spelling her last name "Kaplanski," go figure). She dueted with Shawn on two songs, "Goodnight" and "Heart on Ice," and solo'd on "Old Factory Town," Suzanne Vega's "Calypso," and an original called "Spotlight" (later changed to "You Just Need a Home"). I saw her a few times at Fast Folk Revues at the Bottom Line, and now and then at the Speakeasy. And (I wrote about this not too long ago) I recall the disappointment when she left the business, the buzz of excitement when she returned, and the thrill that accompanied the release of "The Tide." She's one of the sweetest, most humble women you'd ever want to know, and still seems completely in awe of the adoration she receives. And she deserves every ounce of success she's gotten . . . and will continue to get as "Ten Year Night" continues to receive outstanding reviews and she performs to sold-out audiences. I've seen her over 20 times (I'm surprised she doesn't think I'm a stalker. What's that? She does?), and I look forward to her continued success.
