Just wanted to report on the "other" historic type event of the week. Lucy played a WUMB Member Concert on Friday night (the night after the NY Band Show). This radio station has been holding these special interview/concert type shows for years now (Shawn Colvin, Cheryl Wheeler, Cliff Eberhardt, Greg Brown, Dar Williams, etc.) They are usually these nice little intimate shows for members of the station. I've been to a few of them...it's a nice way to see some of the artists you like up front and personal...in a smallish setting. Usually. **LUCY's SHOW WAS THE LARGEST MEMBER CONCERT THE STATION HAS EVER HAD.** Over 600 hundred people had signed up for this show. Unreal. And this was a rainy Friday night show that required driving thru rush hour traffic on the Southeast Expressway in the midst of the Big Lie...err.....um....I mean ....the Big Dig (expressway construction project). I made it right as Lucy was being introduced. It wasn't the band show of NY....but it was really entertaining. It was fun to hear her being interviewd on stage between songs...and there were a lot of laughs. It really showcased Lucy's charming personality and humor. For those who couldn't make it...this show will be aired on WUMB 91.9 FM on Sunday, May 9th (Mother's Day). I always kind of survey the crowd at Lucy shows. I thought it was pretty cool to see something new.....young college guys in the audience..totally mesmorized and transfixed on Lucy. They were in a trance. And really into the music --Playing air drums and air guitar to "End of The Day." I forgot where I was for a minute. And she didn't even have a band with her! ('cept those of us in the back rows playing air instruments). I love it. - -Denise ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 12:28:43 EDT From: MacVic96@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] lucy-list-digest V1 #59 Review of Lucy Kaplansky at the IronHorse in NorthHampton, Mass. on 4/24/99. Set List: Speaking With the Angels One Good Reason 10 Year Night Peace, Love and Understanding End Of the Day Scorpion Swimming For Once in Your Life The Tide The Pi Song Love is a Ride Turn the Lights Back On If You Could See- piano I Still Miss Someone-piano By Way of Sorrow Encore: Guinevere Lucy's first headline event at the IronHorse in NorthHampton filled every seat with enthusiastic fans. The show started promptly at 7:00 with Erin McKweon opening with a half-dozen songs. A very talented guitarist, although I admit not exactly our cup of tea. Erin also sang while making use of the piano that Lucy requested and was warmly received by the guests. Ironically my wife and I were guests at the same hotel as Lucy. We ran into her in the parking lot on her way to the sound check. My wife and I spotted a guitar case going into a car and knew it was Lucy. I must have scared the daylights out of her because I whipped the car around, rolled the window down and yelled "Hey Lucy, wanna sign our book for us?" I think it startled her that someone would recognize her in the hotel parking lot. Lucy graciously signed our copy of "Solo - Women Singer/Songwriters" that we just purchased a few hours earlier. Lucy is far too humble for the amount of talent she has, I think it still suprises her that anyone would take the time to listen to her singing. The show was tight and featured different versions of the songs we are used to on the studio albums. My wife and I both feel that CryCryCry has had a very positive influence on Lucy's singing. She seems to have more range and fluidity to her voice each time we see her. They songs that struck us as most poignant were Scorpion, For Once in Your Life, If You Could See, and Guinevere. Lucy stated that she went jogging earlier and got a laugh when she mentioned seeing a rabbit, which is quite different from the wildlife you see in NYC. Lucy also talked about spending the past few days with her mother and the anguish she felt over telling her Mom about "For Once in Your Life." My only regret was that the IronHorse features rock-and-roll bands late on Friday and Saturday nights and it put the show on a timetable that went to quickly. However it was the best way we could think of to spend 60-70 minutes. If your sitting there wondering whether you should drive the distance to see her, by all means get off your duff and go! I personally believe "10 Year Night" is Grammy material and would like to see Lucy get all the support she deserves. First, I saw both the early and late shows. The first show was nearly a totally full house (yowsa!) with a lot of my/our friends from this list. It was great seeing the two Rons, Sharon, Paul, the two Michelles, I Fong etc. My wife and I brought along a large group of friends, most of whom were seeing Lucy perform live for the first time. It will not be their last time--guaranteed. For the sake of brevity, I'll just say that Cliff Eberhardt did a great opening set and that if you have a chance to see him it is a mistake not to go. He is an absolutely great performer. As others have noted, there were some minor sound glitches at the beginning of Lucy's set. However, after some quick sound adjustments the real fun began. Lucy sang nearly all of the songs from the new album as well as Speaking with the Angel, Scorpion (with guest Catie Curtis), The Swimming Song, and Guinevere. It was a fabulous set. Lucy just gets stronger and stronger with every show, going from one level of brilliance to a higher level. Her voice was amazing as always. The consistent beauty, clarity and honesty of Lucy's singing is just stunning. Playing to a full house at the Bottom Line clearly agreed with her, and she had this look of confidence and joy that was infectious. As great as the whole set was, the highlight of the first show for me was clearly when she sang For Once in Your Life to her mom (who was there). Lucy movingly introduced the song and was seemingly on the verge of being overcome by emotion. She paused for a bit, collected herself and sang the song so poignantly it was incredible--just totally beautiful and genuine. The huge ovation that she received after the song ended was testament to the fact that everyone there knew that they had just seen and heard something special. (I will resist the temptation to go on a jaunt about how unbelievably well crafted, honest and beautifully written all of the new songs are--but they sure are.) The whole set was just great and hearing her with the band was really something special. After the show Lucy was just about mobbed by the audience. In order to get the audience in for the second show, Lucy ended up out on the street talking to people and taking pictures. It was a very cool scene, and the smile on Lucy's face was priceless. OK--on to the second show.... The second show was the best Lucy show I have ever seen--period--full stop. I was sitting right up front and was able to see every nuance of the show. The sound was perfect and Lucy was belting out these songs with a strength and beauty that was powerful and flawless. She was positively glowing, visibly empowered by the band, and seemingly floating on the music--and don't forget, this was the first time that the band and Lucy were doing a live gig together. (I can only imagine what it would have been like if they had been rehearsing for a few months instead of a few hours as John Putnam (lead guitar) told me after the show.) Lucy had to have been aware of the fact that she was practically slaying the place. After a couple of songs she actually mouthed the word 'wow,' so I think even she knew how awesome the show was coming across. Lucy was smiling and dancing, and just having so much fun. It was truly incredible to watch. I would be willing to bet a fair amount that anyone who hasn't seen Lucy perform in the last while will be amazed when they next see her. Harvey ( who will not be too surprised if our days of seeing Lucy in intimate venues are numbered ) ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V1 #60 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
