Attn: New Yorkers- Well!?!?!?! It's 7am on Friday morning....the morning after the historic event at the Bottom Line. Bad enough I didn't get to witness the show myself...but now you're all holding out on me??? Hmmm...perhaps this is NOT a good time to get just the DIGEST version of the list. Someone Out There must have written a review of this show already ....and I just haven't received it yet??? Perhaps I'll just have to ask Lucy for a review of her "Band" show tonight at her solo interview/member concert thingy at UMASS-Boston/WUMB. Great show!!!! Also got to meet Lucy's mom! Lucy was wearing a black leather jacket under the very hot lights. (Did not look too comfortable...) Lucy really seemed to be enjoying herself, and her husband was also thrilled. He was able to sit back and really enjoy the show, and was ecstatic afterwards. I heard him telling her: "Tonight, you WERE Lucy!" (implying that he felt she was really able to connect and let herself come through). Would love to write more, but I am already 5 minutes late for a meeting... Perhaps later. I was driving on fumes last night, so stopped to fill up the tank. NJ has this quaint custom of actually having someone pump the gas for you, so I was just sitting there with the windows open listening to Ten Year Night while the gas was being pumped. After the gas was pumped and the guy came to get the money, he told me he really liked the music and asked what it was. After I told him he went and found a pen and paper and wrote down Lucy's name and the web addresses for Lucy and Red House Records. This reinforces what I've been thinking about this record. To hear it is to love it. Olsson's has sold 76. I think Lucy's really turned the corner! With a lot of folkies, we get mediocre sales, especially if the artist is playing--which Lucy did. People buy CD's at the shows, believing (rightly, of course) that it's better for the artist. 76 in a month is amazing for anyone! I'm so excited! Once again, it was a pleasure meeting up with so many nice folks including Mike Evans, Ron G, Rockin Ron D, Michelle (Mcat), Harvey, Sharon G, Michelle, Fong, and others. This was my ninth time seeing Lucy (twice with C3, once singing backup for Jennifer Kimball, the others solo), and it was the first time I've seen her with a band. The band included Zev Katz on bass, Ben Wittman on drums, and Paul Putnam on electric guitar. Zev & Ben also perform with Jennifer Kimball when she visits NYC. Lucy was dressed in the same leather outfit that she wears at the C3 shows. It looks a little to small for her, but that's just my opinion. Lucy played her acoustic guitar throughout the show. By the third number, Lucy was sweating profusely, and I thought she was going to resemble Whitney Houston from the MTV Movie Awards a few years ago. Remember when Whitney was sweating so badly that she looked like she just came out of a swimming pool? Thankfully, Lucy cooled down thereafter, but her band didn't. Here's the setlist: Speaking With The Angel (acoustic) End Of The Day Ten Year Night Five In The Morning Turn The Lights Back On The Swimming Song Promise Me For Once In Your Life One Good Reason Somewhere Out There Scorpion (with Catie Curtis) E: Guinevere (acoustic with Catie Curtis) Did anyone see the 10:30PM show? I was tempted to stay, but I had a 2 hour drive home, and an 8:00 appointment. "Turn The Lights Back On" was the highlight. It was rocking, and it was nice to see Lucy let loose. My only complaint was that the show only ran approximately 60 minutes. Still, a great performance, and I hope she performs with a band again in the future. What did people think of the show? Not having heard Cliff Eberhardt, I was blown away. He was amazing. I LOVED that song "I Will Not Walk In My Father's Shoes." I'm going to look for that Cd at the (local, independent) record store. Then his encore with Lucy was BEAUTIFUL. I've never heard her do that song -- "Goodnight" from The Tide -- live. Cliff really made it his own song, and her harmonies were gorgeous. Wow. So, she started with "Speaking With The Angel" -- nice. Then I got nervous when she brought out the band and rocked into "End of the Day" without enough vocals. I was sitting near the front, and the sound quality was pretty bad. But they fixed it, and it was a wonderful set. My only crit is that she only played two songs -- Scorpion and Guinevere -- not from "Ten Year Night." But, that is why she brought in the band. Speaking of those last two -- CATIE CURTIS!! I have had a crush on Catie Curtis ever since I got her first album. They're both beautiful. I didn't know who to look at. What a nice surprise. And she played "Five in the Morning," so how can I complain? The story about her mother was also sweet. Just my thoughts...would like to hear others.... Jessica PS. It's the final track on his debut CD, "The Long Road," which also features "My Father's Shoes," the beautiful "Your Face," the Richie Havens duet title track, the rollocking "Right Now," and the kick-ass "I Am The Storm." IMHO, it's easily his best CD, and you should run out and get it. Right Now. BTW, I thought the highlight of last night's Bottom Line show (outside of when I clocked RonD over the head with a beer bottle) was "Somewhere Out There," but I was also a tad shocked by the relatively short 60-minute set. If there are going to be two shows, and the set will have to be shortened because of that, why not go without an opening act? Just wondering. RG ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 19:56:56 EDT From: Wa2suh@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] bottom line show Let's see, what hasn't been said yet? Cliff and Lucy both said that the Bottom Line was their favorite club. (If Lucy says the same thing about another club in the future, let us know). Cliff was very entertaining and had quite a sense of humor. He was on WFUV earlier in the day and he was a riot. In his interview he said that he played lead for Lucy back in '78. It was hot for the performers and the audience as well. I was waiting for them to turn on the AC. Maybe if the price of admission was 50 cents more the club could have afforded the AC. (I shouldn't talk--I got tickets from FUV). I take it that Lucy doesn't perform that much with a backup band. I got the sense that she felt that she was privileged to be standing on the stage at one of the country's most famous clubs with this awesome sound coming out of the speakers. She was really rocking on several numbers. I really think that End of the Day could make it as a "hit" on mainstream radio. I was watching Lucy and Zev making constant motions to the sound guy to raise the levels of various mikes, especially on her vocals. In a way, it was neat, because you expect perfection at this level of performing, and things weren't perfect. Made it more human. Lucy got very emotional during For Once In Your Life. She worked up her emotions by talking about the song for quite a while, then performed it, talked about how special it was for her mom to be in the audience, and then received a huge ovation. She started to get choked up and then said, "Don't make me cry, because then I can't sing!" But she recovered like a pro. I must say that its great sitting up front in a club like the Bottom Line because you can look right into the eyes of the performers, and see tears and sweat. When I saw Lucy in Huntington in February, I had to sit in the back. I got so much more out of this performance. This was the first time I had been to the Bottom Line and I'll definitely go back. Sorry I didn't hook up with the group that have posted other comments. Maybe next time.
