Chris and Meredith Thompson open I believe. This is a rare NY appearance for the great Greg Brown and the last concert I saw there was Dar Williams (Mustard's Retreat opened) and it was Fabulous. And it's only $10! Best $10 you'll ever spend, trust me. Remember, Cry3 covered a Brown song on their record (Oh Lord I Have Made You A Place in My Heart). Get there early for good seats and the sing-along. Amen, Eric. I was one of the lucky ones on the Red House catalog mailing list and ordered TYN in January. It arrived a full month before the store release date. Since then, I bought a second copy at the Barns concert. Red House looks out for us die-hard fans and they are so pleasant to deal with. I'd recommend everyone get on their e-mail list, catalog mailing list, as well as the Lucy Announcements List from her home page. You never know what kind of information or deals you'll come across. It doesn't hurt me any that RH is also John Gorka's label again, too. - -- Jay Votel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1999 09:35:16 -0400 From: Rachel_Ladutke@aporter.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Non Lucy Alert It's actually called the Harvey School. They do great stuff. It's the Clearwater Organization who's behind it. Even though my husband and I have only made it to one of this season's concerts, we belong to Clearwater and volunteer at the Revival every June. It's a wonderful space and they have a model of the Sloop Woody Guthrie on stage behind the performer! Com company.... Independence of mind is exactly about resisting this kind of pressure. I would advise folks to shop exactly where, when and how you want -- but independent minded people are already doing it before I open my mouth. :) Anyway, many online retailers are every bit as independent as Huggy Bunny's Book Nook down in the strip mall, and some of them have fewer employees. The big firms like Amazon are just fronts for the distributors, but they have mammoth selection and deep discounts. As a consumer, it is not my job to turn my face away from a fascinating Internet resource, in the process discovering fewer authors and performers, just so I can render unending charity to some snotty little full-retail boutique that's going to close or move as soon as they raise the rent anyway. I patronize a lot of little store operators, and there's more Soup Nazis than Meg Ryans. Last but not least, some online retailers have cash-back programs that let independent musicians and authors make money directly from each sale - of their own or ANY OTHER work - that's linked from their homepage to the online store. That's cash in the pocket of your favorite struggling folkie or coffeehouse. Something to remember... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Apr 1999 07:19:42 -0400 From: patrick t power Subject: [lucy-list] "Ten Year Night" Cover Tom wrote: <> I think, despite my own reservations about the cover, that it's likely Lucy was entirely aware of what she had in mind for the cover of the CD. I know that the hours and sacrifices are sometimes excruciating and the competition is formidable. - --I do patronize small businesses whenever possible because that is the way I like to shop, but why should I go into a music shop that has never heard of Lucy Kaplansky and pay the owner an extra 5 or 6 bucks for doing me the favor of ordering the album for me? - --While I totally understand the counterpoint to this argument (If we all just...), I am incapable of saving the individually owned record store from the steamroller coming down the pike. - --Beyond those shops which I have just alluded to above, my local music stores are basically named Borders, Barnes and Noble, and Coconuts. - --I know one of the people who was involved in starting Music Boulevard and was privy to some of the imagination, hard work and financial risk that was involved in the project. It has always seemed 'correct' to me that people who have been clever enough to conceive of innovative business plans and execute them deserve at least some of my business. - --I believe that if Music Blvd. (or any other on/off line sales outlet) provides me a means to listen to samples of any kind of music I wish to hear (for as long as I choose to listen to it) as well as links to information about a particular artist and recommendations with respect to other artists who I might like, I am being provided a real service and should patronize such a retailer. Notice that I did not even mention that it is usually less expensive and easier to buy music this way. - --If Music Blvd. (and Amazon.com) features Lucy and Ten Year Night and helps her (and Red House) to more widely distribute albums and to help her to reach a broader audience, isn't that an effort I should totally support? I could go on, but my real point is that there really are two sides to the issue. However, if I have to choose between a total flaming and reading any more about the beautiful Madame Lucy of Kaplansky not being 'beautiful enough' on the cover of Ten Year Night, flame away because a) she always looks absolutely beautiful, b) the album is a masterpiece, and c) I assume Lucy likes the cover picture or a different photograph would have been used. Therefore, there are at least two people liking the cover (me and Lucy) and, with THAT kind of company I can go back to my listening pleasure and forget the cover art. <> <> Harvey ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V1 #45 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
