My personal life interferes once again with music. Darn! You all have fun, hear? - -- Jay Votel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Apr 1999 15:35:16 PDT From: "Carey Farrell" Subject: [lucy-list] at long last Hey everybody, I finally got a copy of TYN on Thursday (am I officially the last one on the list to buy it?). I have to say, I love it as much as everybody said I would. I spent most of my Easter break listening to it. Now I'm even more annoyed that I'll have to miss the Timonium concert (I'll be on tour with my school choir), but I hope everybody else has a great time. Hey, I've been playing End of the Day like crazy. I just love it. So, I decided that before I perform this baby in front of an audience (my family) at a real-live venue (my living room), I should be fully clear on what it means! I think I have the general gist. But, I did have one opinion question about the last line of the first (and last) verse, "Tearing through the deals of the brokers at the bar." I took this to mean that his voice was doing the tearing, since it was cutting "through like a speeding car." But, I also thought that this could mean that his *words* were cutting through the deals of the brokers. And that, after his selling-out, he became also a hypocrite. This makes sense to me, because it suggests that the "he" in the song knows what it is to be whatever it is that he's become. So, basically I'm asking for any reactions/opinions on this topic. I've noticed that Lucy seems to slide that kind of stuff into her songs with great subtly. For example, the verse saying "She'll kiss you on the mouth..." which then leads to "better turn the other cheek." Very clever, b/c it's not only a cliche phrase with its own separate meaning, it also is contextually relevant. Anyway, I think I've gone on and on enough for one evening. Sorry for the long-windedness! Can't wait to hear from ya! Timonium is not far from either Baltimore or York, PA so if you're in either area, come on down! And drop me a line if you're coming so we can try & meet up.
