It was in the Washington Post, actually. However, the Post has been known to pan great performers/singers/songwriters and fawn over those whose talent is not exactly, um, *shining*. So, you gotta take the review with a grain of salt. Me, I don't think Lucy could EVER put out anything bad... >> The only thing I take with a grain of salt this week is a Margarita...so I'm gonna have to ramble a bit about this. Sorry folks. While it's true that I would probably disagree with anyone who wrote an unfavorable review of either Shawn or Lucy's music...I CAN appreciate a fair review. But that Geoffrey Himes review seemed as empty as he was claiming the songs on TYN are. Himes wrote: "It's not that they're bad songs; they're a young woman's well-crafted reflections on romance, growing up, careers and mortality. It's just that not a single chorus melody or lyric phrase demands attention. It all passes by in an agreeable, indistinct blur." Really? Not even a single lyric? It all passes by in an indistinct blur?" "Later on - on your kitchen floor, two flights above the grocery store...I felt things I never felt before...and I still do." -"Ten Year Night" Yeah...those lines haven't been getting much attention at all. ; ) "I want to make it up to you somehow Maybe there's something I could give you now There're so many things you never had Maybe it doesn't have to hurt so bad... for once in your life - "For Once In Your Life" - (song for her mother) Sometimes someone can say something so directly and simply that it puts a lump in your throat. I think those lines convey a common feeling and that's why so many listeners get choked up with this song. We can relate...and are grateful when someone can actually translate those feelings to words so eloquently...and are actually brave enough to get them out. "...And you found out what you wanted well it isn't what you need and you curse this train you're riding you curse it but you never leave..." "How much did it cost you how much did you pay and are you sorry at the end of the day" ("End Of The Day") Those lyrics certainly didn't blur by me. (Besides the fact that the song/music absolutely RAWKS!) And they hit me in a different way than the lines in "For Once In Your Life" do. (And in a different way than the lines in "Ten Year Night" do. ) I could continue and just quote the ENTIRE "Turn the Lights Back On" song next. (This song doesn't demand attention??? Please.) Or I can just fight general with general and end with a quote from the Associated Press review of Ten Year Night to counter the Himes/Washington Post review... "What remains is Kaplansky's passion, her unabashed truth-telling _ fresh eyes surveying the familiar terrain of love, relationships, loneliness, survival. " So there. ; ) - -Denise ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 13:35:32 -0500 (EST) From: Calli Subject: Re: [lucy-list] That Darned Jacket RockinRonD@aol.com wrote: > I agree it looks great on her > but she should give it a rest from time to time. As someone who also gets obsessed with a favourite piece of clothing, I can safely say it probably won't happen anytime soon. There's something about a favourite, comfortable article of clothing that makes you feel safe, so you grab it over and over agian. And you don't care if people notice or are tired of seeing it. At least hers is that cool jacket. Right now I have a pair of jeans I'm probably wearing a hole through, and while I'm not wearing them every day, I miss them when I don't have them on. By the way... Hello, I'm Calli. I'm new to the list, and I'm a weirdo LOL... And an Aquarian. Which is probably redundant. :-) Calli :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 23:04:28 EST From: CrZ4Indigo@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Hey all... New to the list Hey all! My name is Alyssa, I'm 17 years old and I just subscribed to the list. I'm a rather new Lucy fan and became a fan when I saw her on tour with Dar and Richard on "Cry, Cry Cry". I became an instant fan and I am proud to say I talked to her! It was the coolest feeling on earth! Anyways, I'm babbling (which is quite common to me by the way). I'm a member of the Dar list and the Indigo Girls list. To tell you the truth Dar and Lucy's lists seem more friendly and less formal than the Indigo Girls list. Not to say I don't like it but well you know. Anyhoo, I hope I didn't bore y'all too much. I'll catch yah around. Peace, ~Alyssa ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 22:37:34 -0600 From: Bill Wynn Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Hey all... New to the list Welcome, Alyssa!
