"Ten Year Night," (Red House) _ Lucy Kaplansky Lucy Kaplansky may not be a household name, but it should be. The Chicago native's crystal-clear voice soothes like a cool breeze on a stifling summer day, comforts like the arms of a longtime lover. Her latest solo effort, buoyed by backing vocals from John Gorka, Richard Shindell and Jennifer Kimball, formerly of the Story, rests comfortably between alt-country and rock. Gone is the over-the-top twang of a couple of tracks on her last album. What remains is Kaplansky's passion, her unabashed truth-telling _ fresh eyes surveying the famil1ar terrain of love, relationships, loneliness, survival. Kaplansky says she left former partner Shawn Colvin in the 1980s for fear of stardom. Her steps are more assured now as she strides towards greatness. - - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 11:22:17 EST From: SpecGlobal@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Reviews on Amazon.com In case there are Listers who are not aware of this, the ubiquitous Amazon.com encourages people to review albums. I have just posted the following about Ten Year Night: STRONG CONTENDER FOR ALBUM OF THE YEAR * * * * * This record will be a strong contender for album of the year honors. Lucy's incredibly rich and beautiful voice just soars with emotion and intensity; each of the songs, both lyrically and musically, is an individual piece of brilliant craftsmanship; the accompanying musicians (including Larry Campbell who tours with Bob Dylan, Duke Levine who works with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Ben Wittman from The Story) are phenomenal; the backgrounds and harmonies (Richard Shindell, John Gorka, and Jennifer Kimball) are stunning; the production is impeccable. It is amazing how much texture and loving care have been put into this record. After playing the album virtually nonstop since I received it, I still cannot decide which song is my favorite. If you enjoy music (rock, folk rock, pop, or alt country) you have to be kind to yourself and get this album. Music just does not get any better than this. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Mar 1999 12:21:11 -0500 From: Kerry Bernard Subject: [lucy-list] Re: Cancellation ... Why? Tom Huot asked: >Can someone (YH Mgt.) explain to us exactly why the Williamsport show >was canceled? We were also planning on attending from Pittsburgh. The show was cancelled because of *extremely* poor ticket sales. Tickets had been on sale for 2 months and less than 10% of the tickets were sold. And most of the tickets that *had* sold, did so in the first week of sales. In the last 2 months, less than 30 tickets were sold. Ack. Like I said before, we apologize to anyone who had tickets but this wasn't looking to be a very successful show - 30 tickets sold in 2 months, a 2000 seat venue, and the show less than a month away? Ack ack ack. There's a lot to be said for buying your tickets early... I could only play it in hushed tones on the computer at work, but now at home, it's in the cd player. And, boy, is it pretty. But then I guess I didn't have to tell you all that, now did I?
