And good for your mom for exposing you to other than top 40. And good for you for picking up on it. My oldest son will be 16 this year and he and his younger brother do a boys weekend out with me to the Philly folk fest every year. It's such a thrill to watch them discover the broad scope of folk music represented there. Of course, he still listens to MM, NIN, and Nirvana, but at least I get to hear some Dar Williams and such coming out of his room as well. I apologize in advance if this post makes you groan (again). Lucy's interview with John Platt on Sunday was really terrific. John asked some really great questions, and I thought that Lucy came off so well that it seemed as if she were sitting around her living room talking with a friend. Forget her music for a minute. The levels of intelligence, sophistication, sense of humor and just 'niceness' (for lack of a better word) that Lucy displayed had me sitting and grinning for nearly the whole interview. Lucy's ability (and total willingness) to show her audience who she really 'is' and what she really 'feels' is obviously an extraordinarily important part of her music. It is hard for me to listen to Lucy do one of these interviews and not be struck by just how artfully she (and Rick Litvin) have managed to translate the honesty and feeling of heartfelt thoughts and emotion into the music which they write together. I think that reviews of Lucy tend to rightfully focus on the stunning quality and beauty of her voice, but, at least sometimes, not enough attention is paid to the brilliance of her writing abilities. Oh yeah, (as if I was going to leave out the music!) Lucy also sang Five in the Morning and For Once in Your Life live, and they played Ten Year Night and End of the Day from the cd. Was she good? You must be kidding. She was awesome. I heard Lucy's "Ten Year Night" recording on the Gene Shay Folk Hour (not sure if that's the name of it, but you get the idea) about a month ago. I was in my car and was enchanted! It was the first time I had heard it from a recording. All the other times have been live. So XPN plays Lucy. I would like to hear more of her music played on XPN. Louise Taylor's self- penned lyrics are so relevant to most of us, it's almost painful to listen to her." - Daily Southtown, Chicago "RIDE is her strongest yet... its understated tone has an inviting living room warmth, though her songs' scarred characters are full of real-life longings and shortcomings." - David Sokol, New Country Magazine Your hosts, Jodi Sussman, Paula Geno, and David Middleberg Mark your calendar! The show, on August 24, might be a chance for a bunch of us Lucy-List-ers to get together. Assuming everything proceeds as planned, the show might not only include Lucy & Dar but also.... John Gorka! :) So, keep those cards & letters (emailed of course) coming. Right now, my count is about *6*. I need 30. ~Kelli "Music.... it's the best drug in the world." ~ Sarah McLachlan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 20:57:49 -0800 From: "Robert C. Phelps" Subject: [lucy-list] Who is Ben Wittman? And other questions... Forgive my ignorance. Just who is Ben Wittman, producer of TYN? I really like the sound on TYN. I've always wondered how much the producer brings to a record like this. For example, my unscientific impression of this record is that it seems a lot more electric guitar oriented than either "The Tide" or "Flesh and Bone." "Promise Me," "Turn The Lights Back On" and "A Child's Hand" (to name a few) seem particularly guitar-heavy. Is that Lucy, the producer or some combination? Is it significant that "arrangements" are credited to "Ben Wittman and the band (Larry, Zev and Jon)"? And am I the only one who thinks "A Child's Hand" sounds like a cover of an undiscovered gem from the "Let It Be" sessions? Gee, I'm just full of questions tonight. - ------------------------------------ Bob Phelps rphelps@holonet.net - ------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V1 #23 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
