I thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Maya, I got turned on to Lucy through Dar (who I've loved for about 3 years). I went to a 3Cry concert in January and they were all amazing. I haven't gottten TYN but I hear Lucy on the radio (WXPN). I'm a sophomore in high school. Umm.. Other than 3Cry, I like Ani, Christine Lavin, Zeppelin, Doors, Hendrix, Beatles...Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon, and Indigo Girls. And happy people like that... I was hoping I might meet more people from my area who have similar music interests. Is anyone from the Philly area? ~*maya*~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 11:02:13 -0500 From: patrick t power Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy at the Ten Pound Fiddle Lucy Kaplansky made her first appearance at the Ten Pound Fiddle Coffeehouse Friday evening in East Lansing, Michigan. East Lansing, as you may know, is the home of Michigan State University, but despite the competition of MSU's NCAA basketball tournament appearance, over a hundred folks came out to hear one of the finest voices in acoustic music. I was very gratified that we had such a good audience for the show as only 39 people showed up to see her on a double-bill with Susan McKeown the night before at The Ark in Ann Arbor. She started the night off with a Buddy Miller song, which I'm guessing is titled "My Love Will Follow You," followed by "One Good Reason," "Ten Year Night," Steve Earle's "Somewhere Out There," and Loudon Wainwright III's "The Swimming Song." She recounted how, in writing "One Good Reason" with her husband Richard Litvin, they had decided to write an uptempo, upbeat song because "I don't have any of those." "Well, she said, after the song, "at least it was uptempo." She told a wonderful story about the angst of talking to her mother about "For Once In Your Life" (also from the new CD), for whom she wrote the song. Lucy took to the piano for a two-song medley -- a beautiful rendition of "If You Could See" and nice, nice version of Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone." "It's really nice to be back in Michigan and not be at summer camp!" she announced just prior to "This Is Mine," which ended the first set. Opening the second half of the show, Lucy said that since "this is the Ten Pound Fiddle, I'll have to play a real folk song" and launched into "Mary And The Soldier" (from "Flesh and Bone"), followed by "End Of The Day" and "Turn The Lights Back On" both from the new CD. "I think that concludes the angry portion of the show," she said, "but I can't promise." After "Scorpion," she related her story about meeting Richard Thompson in Florida and sat at the piano again to play a Richard Thompson song (which, because I'm not very familiar with his music, I didn't recognize - -- "A Heart Needs A Home"?). After "The Tide," Lucy told of her father's occasional accompaniment on piano when she performs in California as she introduced a song that he (a mathematician) wrote called, "A Song About Pi." But prior to singing the song (a capella) she read from a piece of paper he had given her (explicitly for her to read at her concerts). -- a pneumonic device which he wrote in order to remember the numeric value of Pi. To wrap up the set, she told a story about CryCryCry's first performance, which because they ran a little late, delayed a performance by The Amazing Kreskin, and their interaction with him -- he was upset, apparently, and made a prediction about CryCryCry that was rather funny. At this point, I regretted that I hadn't asked Lucy to play "Guinevere," but my disappointment was short-lived as it was her encore for the evening. Could you let me know if you have >any other info, e.g., price, whether prioritity seating will be available, I'm glad you're interested, but I need to remind y'all: I don't know exactly what kind of perks we can get of a group until I know there *is* a group. I will post all new info as I get it after Friday 3/19. *NO ONE IS OBLIGATED IF THEY DEMONSTRATE INTEREST AT THIS POINT* I am merely trying to get an idea of the kind of interest that exists. :) My guesstimate is that tix will be around $30 or $24, depending on discount opportunities. You can either bring your own food (recommended!!) or buy it in the park (not as tasty as the price would indicate.) Email with questions/reservations. :) ~Kelli ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 19:54:46 -0800 From: "Robert C.
